Tbrahim Hamadtou has surprised viewers by playing table tennis with his mouth at Tokyo 2021 — having lost both his arms at the age of ten.
The Paralympics(残疾人运动会)is full of inspirational(励志的)sportsmen and women overcoming their disabilities in amazing ways, and fans were cheered by Hamadtou’s performance in the table tennis match.
Hamadtou has put on a wonderful experience even though he lost his arms in a train accident while just a child, meaning he controls the bat with his mouth and sets up serves with his foot.
Having first put the bat under where his arm used to be, he went from strength to strength when adopting(采用)his mouth to help play.
“It’s not easy at all,” he says. “Everything in my body moves with me. I need to strengthen my legs all the time because I depend on my legs more than any other player. My neck needs to be always strengthened. The same goes for my teeth. The paddle should not move at all between my teeth because if it does, I lose everything. It was quite difficult playing table tennis after the accident,” Hamadtou recalled, “I had to practice hard for three consecutive(连续的)years on a daily basic training. At the beginning, people were amazed and surprised seeing me playing. They encouraged and supported me a lot and they were very proud of my willing, perseverance(毅力)and determination(决心).”
He won silver medals at the 2011 and 2013 African Championships. The star made his Paralympics debut in Rio(在里约首次露面)at the age of 43 and now 48, he continues to compete with the best athletes of his class.
“I feel happy playing table tennis,” he says. “When I’m standing at the table, probably forget everything else. I feel that I’m having conversations with the ball and it listens to what I say. I really feel like a king when I’m at the table.
