UNIT 1 PEOPLE OF ACHIEVEMENT
Three things invented by women
If you are asked to name important inventors, you may start with Thomas Edison,or Alexander Graham Bell. But what about Mary Anderson?Or Josephine Cochrane?Or Grace Hopper? You may not know their names, but they are just three of the women with great achievements.
For example, where would we be without the windscreen wiper?Back on a cold winter's day in 1902,Mary Anderson was travelling by car through New York City.Snow was falling, forcing the driver to stop and get out again and again to clear it, from which a smart idea crowded in on her:Why not make some kind of wiper that could be controlled from inside the car?And that was exactly what she did.
The dishwasher dates back even earlier to the 19th century, and to the dinner parties thrown by a lady called Josephine Cochrane. As a frequent hostess, she wanted a machine that could wash dishes faster than people. So the first successful dishwasher was born.
Back in the 1940s and 50s, Grace Hopper, a computer specialist, was at the forefront of computer programming. She invented the first compiler, which could translate instructions into code that computers could read.Nicknamed“Amazing Grace”,she serves as a role model and an inspiration to women working in different STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields today.
