As the new semester begins, high school freshmen have a fresh start.
Freshmen in Mianyang Nanshan High School, Sichuan, received a gift from seniors to celebrate the new semester: a specially designed letter of acceptance. It’s a large, red paper-cut envelope decorated with a gold line drawing. When the folded (折叠的) letter is opened, a pop-up design (立体剪纸) of the school’s gate appears along with a detailed campus map.
According to Sichuan Observer, this was designed by senior students who wish to help freshmen get accustomed to the new environment faster and more easily.
In fact, all first-year students are encouraged to seek more tips to empower (赋能) them while starting this new journey.
As students transition (过渡) from junior high, the first year of high school comes with increased pressure from a greater workload (工作量) and faster learning schedule. But seniors have some advice to ease (缓解) the transition. Li Shuyi, 17, from Xi’an Tieyi High School, Shaanxi, said initiative (主动性) and independence (独立) are important.
“No one is there to always keep a close eye on you,” Li said. “It means you set your own learning goals and achieve them independently.”
Good methods can also double your success. Ma Chenyang, 17, from the Middle School Attached to Hebei Normal University, Shijiazhuang, suggested drawing charts or diagrams while taking notes.
“When I prepared for gaokao, I studied physics and chemistry with the help of mind maps. They helped me to create my own system (体系) of knowledge,” said Ma.
However, senior high is not all about learning and tests. It’s also about preparing for the future and discovering yourself.
Zeng Xinyue, 16, from Fuzhou No 1 High School, Fujian, shared her experiences of attending extracurricular (课外的) activities. As a member of the school’s radio drama club, she found herself becoming more outgoing.
