Dujiangyan irrigation system:
creating a land of plenty
The Dujiangyan irrigation(n.灌溉) system(n.系统) in Chengdu is a world-famous system for managing water. It was built in 256 BC by Li Bing, a Qin State's engineer. At the time, it was one of the largest engineering projects(项目) in the world. This wonder of engineering was added to the UNESCO World Heritage(n.遗产) List in the year 2000.
Before the Dujiangyan irrigation system was built, people who lived near the Min River often experienced(v.经历,遭受) terrible(n.严重的) floods(n.洪灾). Li Bing studied this problem carefully and came up with(提出) a clever way to fix it. He decided(n.决定) to change the course of the river.
With the help of (在...的帮助下)his son, Li Bing built a system that controlled(v.控制) the flow of the river. The system reduced(n.减少) the water level in areas at risk(n.风险) of flooding. It also directed(v.引导) excess(adj.过量的) water to farm fields that needed it. By controlling the supply(n.供应量) of water that reached crops, Li Bing created(n.创造) one of the world's earliest irrigation systems.
The system brought wonderful benefits(n.利益) to the people of Chengdu. It not only stopped the floods, but also greatly increased(n.增加) food production(n.产量) on farms. For this reason, Chengdu has since become known as a“land of plenty(n.充裕,许多)”.
The Dujiangyan irrigation system remains in use today, over 2,000years after it was first built. Remarkably(adv.非凡地,了不起地), it still works exactly as Li Bing planned it to.
