What are the uses of the word “to”?

result?

What's the difference between the two
groups of sentences?
Sentences (a) and (b) uses to-infinitive as attributive and adverbial of result, while sentences (c) and (d) uses attributive and adverbial clauses.
Why does the author choose to use sentences (a) and (b) in the reading passage?
Because using to-infinitive
makes sentences more
concise.

不定式作定语
不定式作定语,要放在被修饰词的后面。
I have some books for you to read.
1)不定式作定语,与被修饰的词语有逻辑上的主谓关系,动宾关系等。
He's always the first one to get up. (他总是第一个起床。)
Please give me something to drink. (请给我点喝的。)
2)当不定式作定语,且与被修饰的词语有逻辑上的动宾关系时,不定式动词应该是及物动词;如果不定式动词为不及物动词,或者不定式所修饰的名词或代词是不定式动作的地点、工具等时,不定式后面必须有相应的介词,组成及物的动词短语。 如:
He is looking for a room to live in. 他想找个新房子住。
Because the room was very crowded, I need a tail
bench to stand on.
由于房间里太挤,我不得不站到高板凳上。
3)当作定语的不定式所修饰的名词或代词是不定式动作的承受者时,不定式既可以用主动语态,也可以用被动语
