Buy Nothing Day
“Buy Nothing Day” began in the 1990s in Vancouver, Canada. It was the idea of a man named Kalle Lasn and his organization Adbusters. After working for many years in an advertising company, Lasn began to question the ways advertisers influenced people to buy things and the culture of buying. Was it good to make people feel like they should always want more and more?
Lasn recognizes that people need to buy things. They have to buy things to eat, live and even enjoy life. But Lasn believes that many companies encourage people to buy far more than is necessary. He believes it hurts people and culture.
So Lasn and his organization decided to use advertising against companies. They try to help people understand some of the wrong values and ideas behind advertising. And one way they do this is by encouraging people to celebrate “Buy Nothing Day”.
“Buy Nothing Day” falls on the fourth Friday of every November. Lasn and his organization chose this day for a very important reason. It is the biggest buying day of the year. Advertisers call this day Black Friday. Lasn and his organization hope “Buy Nothing Day” will end the greed and violence of Black Friday.
It turned out that idea was successful. Now, people in more than 60 countries, from Germany to Japan, celebrate "Buy Nothing Day". On that day, people go to stores and encourage others not to buy things. They make gifts instead of buying them. They go for walks, watch the sunset ... Their only rule of “Buy Nothing Day” is not to buy anything! And the message is the same everywhere - buying too much hurts people, culture and the planet!
