How many languages do you know? What are they?
Do you know the language — Palenquero?
Hip-Hop Keeps a Colombian Language Alive
Kombilesa Mi, a young hip-hop group in Colombia, perform their raps in Spanish and another language — but it is not English, the international language of hip-hop.
The other language is Palenquero. About 3,000 people speak it and all of them come from the small village of San Basilio de Palenque in Colombia. The village doesn’t appear in many guidebooks, and few tourists take the time to visit it. However, it is one of the most important historical villages in the Americas. Although Palenquero is centuries old, it has been in danger of dying out. Fewer than half of the people in Palenque today still speak their traditional language.
“At one point, Palenquero was considered poorly spoken Spanish, and because of that, people felt bad and decided not to speak it,” said Andris Padilla Julio, leader of the hip-hop group Kombilesa Mi.
“Kombilesa Mi (“my friends”in Palenquero) was created in 2011 and it has nine members who are all from Palenque. They rap in a mixture of Spanish and Palenquero, aiming to express their unique culture and safeguard their largely forgotten language. “With hip-hop, people can dance but they also listen. Since we are interested in delivering a message ... hip-hop allows us to do that and that’s why we love it,” said Andris.
The group regularly introduce their songs with short Palenquero lessons. The lessons help people to understand not only the words and grammar of their language, but also its deep importance to their life and culture. In this way, through their amazing music, Kombilesa Mi are working hard to help their unique language survive further into the 21st century.
