Making a Difference
Every Sunday morning I run around a lake near my home and I see the same elderly woman sitting by the water, doing something.
This Sunday I stopped running and walked over to her. I saw three turtles in a box. She was carefully scrubbing a fourth turtle with a brush.
“Hello,” I said. “I see you here every Sunday morning. I’d love to know what you’re doing with these turtles.”
She smiled. “I’m cleaning off their shells,” she replied. “Anything on a turtle’s shell can stop him from swimming. It can also weaken the shell over time.”
“That’s really nice of you!” I said.
She went on, “I spend several hours each Sunday morning relaxing by this lake and helping these little guys out. It’s my own way of making a difference.”
“But don’t you think you could spend your time better? I mean, 99% of these turtles don’t have kind people like you to help them clean off their shells. So, how can you truly make a difference?”
The woman laughed. She then looked down at the turtle and said, “If this little guy could talk, he’d tell you I just made all the difference in the world.”
You can change the world — maybe not all at once, but one person, one animal, or one thing at a time. Wake up every morning and believe what you do can make a difference. It does.
