The Students Are Lucky
Class begins. In No. 5 Middle School in a mountainous area in Hunan Province, some
students are having music classes. In one classroom, students begin to play the cello. In another
classroom, students pick up their erhus.
Yan Haiming is their cello teacher. 6 years ago, he came to the school to teach cello. “Music offers
dreams to children, and what I do is help them make their dreams come true,” Yan says.
During the 2020 Hunan art college entrance examination, Yan’s 17 students all got good grades.
“Holding the bow is just like holding the dream of going to university,” says Yang Zuying, one of the 17
students. “Cello brings me into the world of music.”
Dai Fa teaches erhu in this school. He says, “At first, the students knew nothing about erhu.
As they practiced day by day, they now can play it well. When they pick up an erhu, I can see
the excitement in their eyes. And I know what they are thinking. ”
Every day, the school has four music classes, and the students have enough time to practice. Li
Jianjun, the headmaster of the school, says, “We want to help children in the mountains have a better
future through learning music.”
