If you could keep a pet, what kind of pet would you
want? Why?
They’ve Been Together for Over 50 Years
Most of us know about the joy of having a pet, whether it’s a cat, a dog or a rabbit. However, many pets can only stay with us for a couple of years (like rabbits) or a dozen (十几) years (like cats and dogs). Luckily for Jeanna Smith from Minnesota, USA, her pet is very likely to live longer than her.
When Jeanna was a child, she always had a love for tortoises (龟). That’s why her father gave her a gopher tortoise as a gift on her 10th birthday. Jeanna’s parents expected her to form a bond with the little tortoise and learn to take responsibility. But they never thought that bond would last so long.
Since the day she received the tortoise in 1962, Jeanna has cared for him with great love. She named him George. George would always be by her side, no matter where she went. As a girl, she often kept him in a basket while riding her bike, and brought it with her on vacations. As Jeanna grew, the bond grew stronger. She even brought her little pet with her when she went to college. The years went by, and Jeanna got married and had kids. Her kids all bonded with George just like her.
Jeanna is now in her late sixties and George has been her closest friend for over 50 years. In captivity (圈养), a gopher tortoise can live up to over 100 years. That’s why it’s very likely that George might live longer than Jeanna.
George is still going strong. And so is the love between him and his owner. It would be amazing to have a pet that you can grow old with, wouldn’t it?
