If you need to raise money for your team, what will
you do?
The World’s Largest Toilet Paper Pyramid
Students at Bullock Creek High School in Michigan, USA, found an unusual way to raise money for their robotics team. They used thousands of rolls (卷) of toilet paper to build the world’s largest toilet paper pyramid.
The 28 students on the robotics team design robots, build them, and write programs for them. But building robots isn’t cheap, and the team is expected to help raise money for their projects.
Maxton Herst, 18, is the leader of the robotics team. He first had the idea of building a toilet paper pyramid in ninth grade. He came across a video of someone building a toilet paper pyramid. Maxton realized that it was possible to build a record-setting pyramid, and then sell the toilet paper to raise money.
The team began to plan the pyramid last May. One challenge was calculating (计算) how many rolls of toilet paper were needed. The answer turned out to be 27,434. In late December of last year, team members gave up part of their winter holiday to build the pyramid. It took about 16 hours to complete the pyramid. The final height of it was 4.95 meters. The team believes their pyramid is about 61 centimeters taller than the current Guinness World Record.
The pyramid opened to the public on January 4 this year. Sadly, because the pyramid was in the school’s front hall, it could only stay up for three days. With all the excitement caused by the pyramid, it turned out to be quite easy to sell the toilet paper. Families and other supporters bought nearly half of the rolls. A large company bought the rest.
Maxton hoped that the success of his “crazy idea” would inspire others. “If you’ve got an idea, and you know that the idea is good, push it,” he says. “Don’t stop.”
