He and his ice cream truck have been an important part of summer in the neighborhood. So when Nieto disappeared for a couple of weeks, the neighbors got worried. Among them was Donn Bichsel, a friend as well as a customer of Nieto. So when he noticed that Nieto’s truck hadn’t made its usual stop for two weeks, he first sounded the alarm. Donn called Nieto. He learned that Nieto’s truck was broken and he had repaired it and planned to get back on the roads soon. However, for two more weeks, Nieto didn’t show up. Donn called him again. Nieto couldn’t respond because he was in hospital after having a heart attack (心脏病发作). That was just to make matters worse because of his wife’s breast cancer (乳腺癌). When Nieto left hospital, he and Donn finally met up. To pay for his wife’s treatment, Nieto wanted to borrow some money from Donn. After hearing his story, Donn got an idea. He soon started a GoFundMe activity for his friend, and the neighborhood joined in. They have raised more than $16,000 toward a $25,000 goal. “Everybody wants to help, and everybody wants to be a part of this,” Donn said.
