Different Is Beautiful
Destiny Strickland, 11, was born with an illness. It causes her to look different with serious facial deformities (面部畸形). To date, she has received 31 surgeries (外科手术). Her first one happened when she was just 4 months old.
Destiny’s grandmother, Lisa Brown, wanted to protect her as much as possible as she grew up. She limited Destiny’s time in the public, afraid of what people might say. “If I could have just taken her to an island and kept her away from all of that, I would have,” said Lisa.
Destiny, however, had other plans. She didn’t want to hide from the world anymore. On her first day of school, Destiny walked into her class with confidence (自信) and was ready to make new friends. Teachers had explained to students in every grade that it’s important to understand that everyone is different in their own way and how that shouldn’t stop them from being friends. So she already had a long line of friends waiting to meet her. Lisa realized that it wasn’t Destiny who was afraid of the public, but it was herself.
Destiny wanted to take things a step further to inspire other people. She and her grandmother started an activity called “Different Is Beautiful” online to tell others that one’s appearance (外表) is only one side of them. “What matters is what’s on the inside,” she said.
