A Special Law
Are you tired of gossip? Have you ever been hurt by it? A law says no to it.
The government in Binalonan, a small Filipino town, has made a local law to prevent gossip from spreading. According to the law, everyone should stop gossip and be responsible for the things they say. “It’s such a waste of time,” Mayor Guico said. “People would have something better to do. Banning gossip is our way of improving the quality of life in our town.”
If local people break the law, they have to pay a fine and pick up rubbish. First-time gossips risk a fine of $3.8 and three hours of collecting rubbish in the streets. If they break the law again, they need to pay up to $20 and put in eight hours of community service.
The law may seem strange, but it has come into force in the Moreno neighborhood of the town since 2017. And many people who break the law have paid the fine and spent an afternoon collecting rubbish as punishment for gossiping in public. However, no one has got punishment for the second time. After all, nobody wants to be a boring gossip. The mayor also hopes the rule can show other towns that Binalonan has good people and it’s a good and safe place to stay.
Answer the questions.
