Global Handwashing Day
Each October 15, millions of people around the world take part in Global Handwashing Day. But why do we celebrate a day for something we do all the time? Well, research shows that not enough people around the world often wash their hands with soap. This leads to the deaths of millions of people every year.
Myriam Sidibe, a public health expert, said that soap is “the most beautiful invention in public health.” Washing your hands with soap can have a huge influence on reducing flu and the spread of other diseases (疾病). It prevents people from getting sick and keeps them healthy.
However, handwashing with soap does not happen as often as you might think. This is partly because of lack of resources (缺乏财力或资源) in some poor countries, but it’s also because for many people, handwashing is simply not part of their daily habits. It’s not easy to get people to change the habits they’ve had since early childhood, but this is what Global Handwashing Day wants to do.
In 2008, the Indian cricket (板球) team joined around 100 million Indian schoolchildren in washing their hands to celebrate the first-ever Global Handwashing Day. Every year since then, many different events have been held around the world. In 2014, Global Handwashing Day was used to fight against Ebola (埃博拉病毒) in some African countries.
Today, local and national leaders around the world continue to use the day to spread the message about the value of clean hands. The hope is that handwashing can become a common part of people’s lives and make a difference to the health of millions around the world.
