Are you interested in being an explorer?

You probably know Marco Polo, the famous traveler who headed for China along the Silk Road in the Yuan Dynasty. But do you know about Ibn Battuta? Ibn Battuta was a great explorer who lived at almost the same time as Marco Polo.
Ibn Battuta left his hometown of Tangier, Morocco in 1325. He traveled for about 30 years! He went through many interesting parts of Asia and Africa. His travels weren’t always easy. One time, he met with a very big storm on the sea and lost many valuable things. Even though he often had problems, he also saw lots of amazing things during his travels. Once in India, he went to a palace and met a king who had 200 soldiers, 60 horses, and 50 elephants around him. The elephants were wearing real gold!
Ibn Battuta’s last journey was to the West African kingdom of Mali. Crossing the Sahara Desert from Morocco took him more than two months. Before he left for Mali, Ibn Battuta heard about a very generous king. The king often gave wonderful gifts to everyone who visited him. However, when Ibn Battuta arrived in Mali, he learned that the old king had died. The new king only gave him some food. Ibn Battuta just laughed.
When Ibn Battuta finally went home to Morocco, he wrote a book about all his experiences. Later, people translated the book into many different languages. Because of this, we can learn about him and about life during the 14th century. Ibn Battuta died in 1369 at the age of 64.
