What do you know about plastic pollution?
Every year, lots of plastic goes into the oceans. There are five huge areas in the world’s oceans that are a “soup” of floating rubbish. One of these areas, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), is three times as large as France.
But the plastic is spread over a large area, so it’s impossible to collect it piece by piece. Ocean Cleanup Group has developed a new device to gather up the floating plastic pollution to make it easier to remove.
Boyan Slat, a member of the group, got the idea for the ocean cleanup device when he was just 18. His device is made up of a 2,000-foot-long floating U-shaped tube and a screen. As the water and the wind push the device, it can collect the rubbish, so that it’s easy for a ship to collect and remove the plastic.
The group began testing the device last September. But it soon became clear that the screen was just moving with the plastic, not collecting it. After careful study, the group added a parachute to the device to make it move slower than the plastic. Then it could collect the plastic as planned. This June, they put the device into the ocean again. So far it has worked well.
This success is just the beginning. Now the group wants to make a better and larger device that can collect plastic for up to a year.
