What do you want to be when you grow up?
When Ruwanka Purasinghe from America was in middle school, he built a park in his bedroom. It was made of Lego bricks. “After seeing the park, my dad was very excited and said I would grow up to be an engineer,” he told a magazine.
Purasinghe said he knew about engineering as a kid. His father was a teacher of civil engineering in a college. “But I wasn’t really sure I wanted to do that in the future at the very beginning,” he said. While in college, he traveled to Italy. There, he saw Rome’s ancient aqueduct system. The system served the people of Rome thousands of years ago and it is still being used today. Purasinghe said it really opened his eyes. After that, he decided he would be an engineer.
Purasinghe has realized his dream. Now he works as a geotechnical engineer for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power in America. He solves water-supply problems in pipe systems, aboveground water tanks, etc. Purasinghe thinks this work is very important, especially when the city is very dry. “Civil engineers have been solving problems for thousands of years,” he said. “I love my job and I enjoy thinking of ways to help people in the city.”
