Hillary Yip is a 14-year-old girl from Hong Kong, China. She isn’t an ordinary girl, but the founder and CEO of MinorMynas — a company that helps kids learn languages online. About four years ago, Yip’s mother sent her and her brother to a summer camp in Taiwan, China to improve their Mandarin. They stayed there for one month. Since they were only allowed to speak Mandarin there, the sister and brother learned the language almost overnight. “My Mandarin was terrible at first, but after the trip I just saw how much I improved,” Yip said. “Learning a new language is such a difficult thing for us kids, so I really want to make a change and solve this problem for all of us. I want to bring this experience online. I want kids to be able to learn a new language fast without having to fly to a faraway place.” With that idea, Yip entered a kids’ entrepreneurship competition, and she won. After that, she created her app MinorMynas with the help of her mentors and parents. MinorMynas allows kids to learn new languages through talking with their peers in other countries by using video calls. MinorMynas has been a success. It is popular and now has users in over 50 countries.
