① journey 意为“旅行，旅程”，是可数名词；before your journey starts 意为“在你的旅程开始之前”，journey 在这里比喻“初中生活”。

③ pool 意为“水池，游泳池”，是可数名词；文中把小学比作小水池，突出“又小又安全”。

④ wind 意为“风”，读 /wɪnd/；protect ... from winds 意为“保护……免受风雨的侵袭”。
