(Mary meets Dickon near the high stone wall of the secret garden)
Dickon: Your eyes are shining. Have you found something amazing these days?
Mary: I’ve found a locked garden! And I got its old metal key by accident under a stone covered with dry leaves. I pushed away the heavy stones and saw it last week. I could hardly believe my eyes when I pushed open the door hidden by thick wild bushes.
Dickon: Oh, really? What was it like inside when you first went in? I’ve heard people whisper about a locked garden on the manor (庄园) for years, but no one knows its exact location. Many workers avoid talking about it.
Mary: It looked grey and lifeless at first. Dry rose branches were everywhere on the cold ground. Dead leaves piled up layer after layer. My heart sank and I almost gave up hope. But then I looked carefully and found many tiny green buds (绿芽) under those dry branches. It’s not dead at all! It’s just sleeping through the long cold winter.
Dickon: That sounds wonderful. Those little buds will grow fast and turn into beautiful roses when spring comes. I know much about wild plants and small animals around the manor. I can help you take care of them if you want. I know which weeds (野草) will stop the roses growing and how much water they need. I’ve watched plants grow on the moor (旷野) all my life.
Mary: Please don’t tell anybody else about our garden. It has been hidden for nearly ten years. No one working in the manor knows I went inside. The owner closed it after his wife died and ordered all workers never to open the gate or step into it. He could not bear to see the place without her.
Dickon: I promise. I will keep the secret well. We can pull weeds and carry water early in the morning before other people wake up. Little by little, we can bring the forgotten garden back to its former beauty.
Mary: To tell you the truth, I have changed a lot since I came to this big house. I used to feel lonely and bad-tempered all the time. I cared for nothing but myself. But when I stay in this garden and work with the plants, I feel warm inside. I begin to watch plants and small animals carefully. I even want to be kind to Colin, my sick cousin who stays in his dark room all day and seldom talks with anyone.
Dickon: The garden is doing magic to you. It changes not only flowers, but also people’s hearts. Maybe it can bring hope to Colin as well, if he could come and see those green buds one day.
Mary: I hope so. But we have to keep quiet. Don’t let anyone know our plan until the garden becomes lively again. It must be our little secret for now.

A gentle tap (轻敲) breaks the shell of a steaming hairy crab. A small spoon helps lift its rich golden roe (蟹黄), while a thin pick (挑针) helps pick out the soft meat deep inside its legs. Next to the plate is usually a set of eight small tools. Every tool is made for getting meat from one part of the crab. People call them “xiebajian”.
In Jiangsu Province, it is common to see “xiebajian” on dinner tables in autumn, as it is the best season for enjoying fully-grown hairy crabs. Their meat and golden roe become tasty. In Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs are very popular in this season. People love them for their sweet meat and full roe. As Yao Shuisheng, a spokesman for the Suzhou Yangcheng Lake Hairy Crab Association, says, “The best time to enjoy the hairy crab is from late October through late November.”
The tradition of using “xiebajian” started in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It is said that a man called Cao Shu created the earliest three tools. He wanted to get crab meat more easily. Over time, more tools were developed and the full set of eight was formed. Later, these “eight crab tools” became very popular in Jiangnan, the region south of the Yangtze River. This set usually has a hammer (锤子), an anvil (铁砧), a pair of tongs (钳子),a spatula (铲子), a spoon, a fork or scissors, a scraper (刮刀) and a pick. People use the hammer on the anvil to break the shell. The spatula helps separate the crab meat from its body. And the thin pick can reach those tiny places that our fingers cannot get into.
Using “xiebajian” turns eating into a special and enjoyable activity. It may look quite complicated (复杂) at first, but its purpose is simple: to help people slow down from the fast pace of modern life and take time to feel the pleasure of eating.
28. How does the writer begin the passage?
A. By telling a short story. B. By introducing the background.
C. By asking a question. D. By describing a scene.
29. When is the best time to enjoy Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs?
A. From late October to late November. B. From early September to early October.
C. From December to January. D. From November to December.
30. Which sentence uses “separate” with the same meaning as the underlined word?
separate/ˈsepəreɪt/ ① (使)分开 ②分别 ③分开的 ④ (使)分散
A. The war separated many families.
B. The two friends separated at the station.
C. We separate the good apples from the bad ones.
D. Raw meat must be kept separate from cooked meat.
31. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To introduce the traditional tool “xiebajian” and its cultural value.
B. To tell people how to eat hairy crabs in the right way.
C. To show different kinds of traditional food in Jiangsu.
D. To explain why hairy crabs taste delicious in autumn.

When animals get sick, they cannot tell us exactly how they feel, making it harder to detect (察觉) their emotional pain. However, through careful study and experiments, researchers are learning that animals may suffer from some of the same emotional problems as humans. People troubled by their feelings often visit a psychiatrist (精神科医生). Likewise, new research shows veterinarians (兽医) can also offer treatment for mental illness in pets.
Nicholas Dodman, a well-known veterinarian, holds the belief that animals have thoughts and emotions similar to our own. For example, some dogs have repeated (重复的) behaviors like sucking on blankets, biting their sides, or even chewing on rocks, which is similar to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD,强迫症) in humans. Studies find that these dogs are more likely to have a problem with one special gene. Other similar animal-human links have been found. Older cats that show signs of confusion and loss of sleep may have a form of Alzheimer’s disease, a condition that affects some elderly people. Dodman says that this research is only the beginning of understanding the connection.
Animals can also develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD,创伤后应激障碍) from terrible experiences, an illness which is commonly seen among soldiers who return from war. ▲ After a gunshot injury, a dog named Elsa became so afraid of separating from her owner that she kept him awake all night. Gina, a German shepherd who looked for bombs during the Iraq war, struggled with a fear of people and loud noises after returning home. Both Elsa and Gina began to feel better when they received treatment for PTSD.
Dodman suggests four important things to help protect our pets’ mental health. First, make sure they live in an interesting environment with plenty of exciting activities and toys. Second, feed them a healthy diet. Third, give them lots of exercise. Fourth, try to understand them — know their thoughts and feelings. After all, if animals can share our emotional problems, they surely deserve (值得) our understanding and care in return.
32. Nicholas Dodman believes that ________.
A. dogs can tell exactly about their feelings when they get sick
B. pets with illnesses often cannot get proper treatment
C. animals can have mental illness similar to that of humans
D. dogs have more repeated behaviors than cats do
33. Which of the following can be put in ▲ in Paragraph 3?
A. Soldiers with PTSD usually receive lots of medical care.
B. Many soldiers choose to keep pet animals at home.
C. We should pay attention to the soldiers’ emotions.
D. We can also see this problem among our pet animals.
34. What can we learn from the passage?
A. A boring lifestyle is the main cause of mental illness in pets.
B. Old cats with loss of sleep must have developed Alzheimer’s.
C. Some dogs share the same gene problems as humans with PTSD.
D. Understanding animals’ needs can support their mental health.
35. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Animal Emotions Are Affected by People B. Mental Health Care Isn’t Just for People
C. New Ways to Treat Pets’ OCD and PTSD D. Similar Genes Found in Pets and Humans

The earliest forms of Chinese raincoats were made of straw and they were called “straw rain capes”. Now, few people wear straw rain capes any more. But in the past, they were popular, especially among farmers and fishermen.
The straw rain capes were described in lots of poems and articles in different periods. They were everywhere in the countryside of China in the 1970s. But as society develops, they are slowly losing their place. Later, other materials were found to be more suitable for making rain capes.
Fan Licai, a woman in Zhuliangzhuang Village, Lianyungang City of Jiangsu Province, has a special love for straw rain capes. It is said that she is the only one still making straw rain capes for a living in Ganyu District. The woman learned the skill when she was 12. When she was young, she could make two capes in three days, and make a living for her family. Now her children ask her not to make capes any more. They think she should enjoy her time. However, she still continues to make straw rain capes. For her, it is a good way to spend her free time, as she has done it for so many years. What’s more, she really desires to keep this traditional skill alive. A traditional skill is like a precious old memory that carries the stories and customs.
Making a straw rain cape needs 4 kilograms of straw, and now Fan needs 4-5 days to finish a single cape. “Still, I hope more people will learn about this traditional skill. It is normal for Grade Nine students to face huge study pressure. Busy learning schedules, frequent (频繁的) exams and high expectations from parents often make students anxious and worn out. Long-term pressure is harmful to us both physically and mentally (心理上), and it may also prevent us from making progress in study. Therefore, it is necessary for us to take useful measures to reduce stress effectively.
Firstly, wise time management matters greatly. Blind overtime study and messy learning plans usually lead to low efficiency and endless self-doubt. So we should set clear daily goals and follow fixed learning routines. Scientific plans can help finish tasks efficiently and reduce unnecessary anxiety.
Secondly, regular exercise works well. Sitting and studying for hours every day makes our bodies tired and our minds tense. Regular exercise can not only build up our bodies but also help us keep a positive state of mind.
Thirdly, active communication serves as a practical way to reduce pressure. When we feel upset, many of us choose to keep everything to ourselves. In fact, a talk with parents, teachers or classmates can bring us emotional comfort and useful guidance. It helps us walk out of confusion quickly.
Most importantly, we should form a sensible attitude towards school grades. Exams are only tools that check our weaknesses. Valuing self-improvement more than grades allows us to face challenges bravely.
In general, pressure is an unavoidable part of Grade Nine study. With scientific ways and a positive mindset, we can balance study and rest and grow better under pressure.
Summary
It’s common for Grade Nine students to meet heavy study pressure. Too much pressure does harm to our __________63__________, and may stop us from making progress. So __________64__________. First, manage time wisely and make proper plans to raise study efficiency. Second, take regular exercise so that __________65__________. Third, communicate with others actively when feeling upset.

【答案】32. C 33. D 34. D 35. B

I wish someone would take it up and keep it going for years to come. It is not just a straw rain cape, but also a special part of our culture and history.” Fan said.

【答案】例文:
Mobile Phones
What do you think is the most useful invention in the modern world? In my view, it is the mobile phone invented by Martin Cooper in the US in 1973.
Mobile phones have a great effect on people. First, we can keep in touch with family and friends anytime and anywhere. Besides, all kinds of information can be searched for in seconds. Meanwhile, mobile phones make it easier for us to relax in our spare time.
However, every coin has two sides. We should use mobile phones wisely. We should regard them as a tool for learning instead of playing games. What’s more, we’d better not bring them to school so that we can focus more on our study.
In a word, mobile phones are helpful as long as we use them properly!
