In August 2026, a heartwarming reunion (团聚) took place in the Mu Us Desert in Inner Mongolia. Yin Yuzhen, a Chinese farmer, met Ronald Sakorski, an American retired teacher, after 26 years apart. Their friendship began in 1999, when Sakorski, teaching in China, saw Yin’s story on TV and was moved to tears. He raised $5,000 to help her plant trees in the desert*.
Over the years, Yin and her husband planted more than 50,000 trees with the money. The trees turned the sandy land into a forest. Yin named the forest “Sakorski Forest” and put up a brick with his name on it. She never forgot the American teacher. In May 2026, she made a video and asked for help online to find him. Within 48 hours, lots of people joined the search and helped them reconnect.
Three months later, Sakorski returned to China. On August 24, they met in the forest. The small tree they planted together 26 years ago was over 10 meters tall. They planted a new tree to mark their friendship. Sakorski said, “This is a story written in Hollywood, not a reality. We never thought such a great and special meeting could really happen, but we are experiencing this magnificent moment.”
Their reunion was not just about trees. Sakorskd also visited Luoyang, where he taught in 1999. He met some of his former students. He said, “Teachers plant a seed in students’ hearts. That seed grows into a tree and then a forest.” He added, “If a simple teacher and a desert lady can create this forest, imagine what more people can do together.”
When Sakorski left China on September 1st, they hugged tightly at the airport. Both had tears in their eyes. He said, “Any act of kindness, no matter how small, will never be wasted.” Their story shows friendship and kindness can cross oceans and time. As Sakorski once said, “Chinese people and American people can be one family.”
