13. A. Tense. B. Sociable. C. Successful. D. Smart.
【答案】11. C 12. A 13. A
【解析】
【原文】It is hard to hear the sound of your own voice, but that sound may affect other people’s impressions of you even more than what you say. A strong, smooth voice can enhance your chances of rising to CEO, and a nasal sound or high volume can drive colleagues to distraction. New research shows the sound of a person’s voice strongly influences how he or she is seen. The sound of a speaker’s voice matters twice as much as the content of the message, according to a study. The speaker’s voice quality accounted for twenty-three percent of listeners’ evaluations. The content of the message accounted for eleven percent. Other factors were the speaker’s passion, knowledge and presence. People who present rough, weak or breathy voices tend to be regarded as negative, weak, passive or tense. People with normal voices are seen as successful, sexy, sociable and smart.
Questions:
How can one’s voice affect people?
How much does a speaker’s content of message affect listeners’ evaluation?
What are people with weak voices like?

【答案】14. B 15. C 16. C
【解析】
【原文】If James O. Jones were the boss, he would likely make hundreds of thousands a year more than a CEO who sounded like Mike Tyson. Those are the findings of a new research by Duke University. The study shows that male CEOs with deeper voices tend to manage larger companies, make more money and stay in their jobs for longer. The research is one of the first attempts to assess whether the voice pitch plays a role in the labor market. Researchers pulled recordings of CEOs from conference courses and videos of interviews on TV and studied them. The analysis showed that CEOs with lower voices managed bigger companies and as a result made more money. The researchers got quite specific in their findings, claiming that a decrease in voice pitch of twenty-two Hertz translates to an increase in company size of four hundred and forty million dollars in property. They also found that CEOs with lower pitch voices earn an average of one hundred and eighty-seven thousand dollars a year more than CEOs with higher pitched voices. The CEO study also showed the bosses with lower pitched voices tend to hold onto their jobs for around five months longer than their higher pitched peers.
Questions:
What are lower-pitched CEOs like?
Where did researchers gather CEOs’ voices?
How much money does twenty-two Hertz in pitch translate to in company size?

17. Currently, a new hospital ____________ in the suburban area to improve local medical services.
A. builds B. is building C. is being built D. built
18. — When ________ for Canada, do you know?
— I’m not sure. When he ________, I will let you know.
A. he leaves; leaves B. he leaves; will leave
C. will he leave; leaves D. will he leave; will leave
19. The famous director, as well as the main actors in the film, _________to a TV program to have a face-to-face talk with the audience last Saturday.
A. have been invited B. has been invited C. was invited D. were invited
主语是“The famous director”,遵循就远一致的原则,“as well as the main actors”不影响谓语动词的选择,故谓语动词用第三人称单数,主语“The famous director”和“invite”之间是被动关系,故用一般过去时的被动语态。故选C项。
20. By the time the rescue team arrived, all the injured ________ to the nearest hospital.
A. had been sent B. were sent C. have been sent D. are sent
【答案】A

A. so that B. as if C. now that D. even though
【答案】A
【解析】

—That’s OK. I can manage it by myself.
A. have been working; have B. have worked; had

【答案】A

Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Different background shouldn’t mean lesser education. Fifty years ago, in a primary school classroom, two boys aged 11 took an examination ____27____ was called the 11-plus. It would make decisions about the rest of their lives. Paul passed and went to a “grammar school”. Baz failed the examination and went to a “secondary modern school”. They did not see each other again for years.
Many grammar schools ____28____ (establish) hundreds of years ago to teach the Latin language to children who were not from rich families. They encouraged students to study ____29____ they were 18 and then to go to university. Secondary modern school students left at 16, usually ____30____ fewer qualifications than grammar school students. Baz says the secondary modern school had ____31____ (few) resources and the quality of teaching was not as good.
Things have changed. In the 1960s and the 1970s “comprehensive schools” were created. Today, 90 percent of children aged 11 to 16 from the same area go to the same school without ____32____ (take) any entry examination.
The British often disagrees about the best way ____33____ (educate) their children. Many people say that comprehensive schools help more children to succeed because they provide everybody with similar opportunities in a fairer way. Another view, though, is that more intelligent children, especially ____34____ from poorer homes are better supported at grammar schools. Now, the government plans to open new grammar schools ___35___ almost two million children can go to the same type of school that Paul attended.
And Paul and Baz? Aged 60, they met again and compared _____36_____ had happened to them. After university, Paul qualified as a teacher. Baz went to work in a factory at 16 and later became an engineer. In fact, Baz had a much higher salary than Paul — so perhaps life is fair after all.

How many times have parents had to argue with their young son or daughter about getting their face out of their phone and focusing on the world around them? It’s completely normal for parents of growing children to be concerned about their child’s safety, but is their ____43____ to social media really harming them?
Social media was created to ____44____ people with others online and has recently been added to smartphones, making it far more ____45____ than it originally was. This new way to easily be able to use social media has encouraged children and teens to begin to use sites such as Facebook and Twitter frequently. Maturing teens and children are usually very timid when it comes to socializing with their families, which they sometimes view as “annoying”. So, what do these kids use as a solution or a(n) “____46____”? The answer is simple: social media.
However, when they use social media for a large amount of time, parents tend to show concern for their child and ____47____ social media for demanding their attention.
The word, “social”, was entered into the term, social media, for a reason. Parents of growing teens don’t seem to understand that. When they see their child using Twitter, they think that they are using it to get away from real world responsibility. The truth, however, is that they are using it to connect with their ____48____ friends, make new friends, and receive information about what is ____49____ happening in the modern world.
Children and teens are ____50____ accused for using social media only for entertainment purposes and for huge amounts of time. Parents should really think about how social media can help children and teens learn and grow in the real world rather than it just being another ____52____.

Most of the people I know here at university ____54____ the desire to travel and escape the stress surrounding us. Yes, I have a lot to handle and it’s a fine ____55____ act managing my part-time job, my degree and my social life to a perfect level. In a truly open world, we can get anywhere, see anything and experience every culture under the sun, at the click of a button, and buy a ____56____.
Many people I met while working in China were surprised at the number of countries I’d travelled to. Compared to friends and family I consider myself vastly ____57____. I’ve never set foot across the pond in the U.S.A and Canada, let alone South America and even within Europe my checklist of destinations is far from ____58____. I was also met by ____59____ at how little travelling I had done within my own borders. This was something I had not really considered before. How much of my own country had I really seen and experienced? To those from a place as vast and varied as China, Britain was really so ____60____ in comparison and so to have spent 20 years there and not seen every part of it was quite surprising.
I had a conversation with a Chinese colleague over the reasoning behind our use of golden Cotswold stone, which sounds dull for most people. As a student of history, I found anything ____61____ fascinating. However it was not the stone within British cities I found interesting. What was ____62____ was that it was something I had never even considered, and yet here was someone hooked on something I had simply taken for granted.
We continued our discussion, yet I was left ____63____ that I could not answer her question. (A)
My husband and I were once in Nepal (尼泊尔) to see sunrise over the Himalayas.
One morning we awoke to total darkness at 5 o’clock. As we rushed through a town with cameras in hand, I noticed the calm, gentle way the Nepalese people greeted the morning. One man boiled a huge pot of milk tea, and other villagers gathered around his fire, cupping their hands around small glasses of the steaming sweet mixture. It was fascinating, but not to be left behind, we joined the stream of tourists moving quickly up to the lookout point.
The top was crowded when we arrived, but after 10 minutes of cold waiting, the assembled group gave up. “The cloud cover is too heavy,” one said. Then one by one they rushed down the hill to the next item on their sightseeing list. I was disappointed as well, but suddenly I noticed a small Nepalese boy absently playing with a stick and shooting quick glances at the clouds. He must know something we don’t, I thought. I decided to wait with him.
The boy and I didn’t have to wait long. Moments later, a tiny stream of golden light burned through one thick cloud, then another. Rose-colored fog warmed the backs of the clouds, and suddenly the morning sun stole a glance around the side of the mountain, miles above where I’d expected it to be.
Nothing I’d seen before prepared me for the moment the clouds withdrew with bowed heads, and the magnificent Himalayas were revealed before, around, and above me. I sat in astonishment, not breathing, not daring to look away, certain that God had placed me here at the backdoor of Earth to show me what Heaven really looks like. I certainly got the message. Never again will I rush a sunrise. I now know Nature will supply her fruits to me only when I am truly ready to receive them.

A. she felt kind of having faith in him
B. the restless tourists disappointed her
C. that boy was praying to the sun with a magic stick
D. she had nothing more to see on her sightseeing list
70. Which of the following words best describe the author’s feeling when she saw the sunrise?
A. Totally shocked. B. Absolutely amazed.
C. Truly frightened. D. Extremely interested.

(C)
My own experiment with culture shock came to a fruitless end when I returned with homesickness from a year’s study in Italy. I had never heard of culture shock. All I knew was that I was unhappy and wanted to go home.
That was twenty years ago, and since then culture shock has become a real field study. It is now understood that any normal person, finding himself or herself for an extended time in a new culture, is in for trouble.
The process of “culture shock” is now recognized as so predictable that its four stages have been noticeable. The first is the honeymoon stage, familiar to those of us who love to travel, but never stay in one place long enough to find out what follows. In this stage, the new country and its people seem delightful. Everything is better than home. Everything is so different and charming.
Then the bloom comes off the rose. Now the people start to look shallow, selfish and stupid. The different ways of doing things don’t seem interesting any more. You start to feel tired all the time. Culture shock has set in. You feel at sea.
The emotional response to culture shock in stage two can be extreme. Confusion, depression and anxiety, and resentment can all enter to varying degrees. You may become physically ill. Little things seem terribly annoying.
The happier resolution is to move on to stage three. Adjusting. Rather than itemizing (列举) what’s “wrong” with the natives, you remind yourself that “right” and “wrong” are not meaningful terms in cultural matters.
Instead, you try to understand what motivates the natives, perhaps realizing that many of the things you don’t like are related to the things you do like.
As time goes on, you should be moving into stage four. Acceptance. At this point, you simply don’t think any more about the specialties of the natives. You accept them as individuals. You have started to feel at home; you know how to do things. You have not rejected your old culture; but the native ways have settled upon you. You feel optimistic about your future here. You have truly arrived.
75. Why do people not suffer from culture shock when they first arrive in a foreign country?
A. They love to travel.
B. The new country and its people are delightful.
C. They don’t stay in one place long enough.
D. Everything is so different and charming.
76. What do you understand by the underlined sentence “Then the bloom comes off the rose.”?
A. The rose blooms.
B. The rose comes up.
C. Something good goes away.
D. Something good comes about.
77. Which of the following statements will the writer agree with?
A. Any normal person facing a new culture will be in trouble.
B. Culture shock is now recognized as unpredictable.
C. When you reject your old culture, you can accept the new one.
D. There is no “right” and “wrong” in terms of cultural matters.
78. The passage is mainly about ______.
A. the study of culture shock
B. the four stages of culture shock and their features
C. how to get rid of culture shock
D. the writer’s own experiment with culture shock
【答案】75. C 76. C 77. D 78. B

The Significance of Traditional Chinese Customs
____79____These practices, passed down through generations, are more than just habits — they are the soul of Chinese culture, connecting people to their history and to each other.
One of the most well-known Chinese customs is the celebration of the Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year. Families travel thousands of miles to reunite, a tradition called “chunyun” which is often described as the world’s largest annual migration (迁徙). During this time, people clean their homes to sweep away bad luck and decorate with red lanterns and couplets. ____80____This dish symbolizes prosperity, as the word for fish in Chinese (“yu”) sounds like the word for “surplus.” On New Year’s Eve, families gather for a big feast, and children receive red envelopes filled with money, known as “hongbao,” to wish them good fortune.
Another important custom is the Dragon Boat Festival, held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. This festival honors the ancient poet Qu Yuan, and people celebrate by racing dragon boats and eating zongzi — glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. ____81____ They hang mugwort (艾草) and calamus (香蒲) on doorsteps to ward off (驱逐) evil spirits and disease. These activities not only keep Qu Yuan’s memory alive but also encourage community teamwork, especially during the dragon boat races.
Traditional customs also play a role in shaping personal values. For example, the Mid-Autumn Festival, a time for family reunions under the full moon, teaches people the importance of togetherness and gratitude. People share mooncakes, a sweet pastry, and admire the moon, passing down stories like the legend of Chang’e.
____82____ In a fast-paced modern world, they remind people of their roots and provide a sense of belonging. Preserving these customs is not just about keeping the past alive — it’s about ensuring that future generations can understand and take pride in Chinese culture.
A. One of the key foods served at this feast is fish.
B. Traditional Chinese customs are an important part of the country’s identity.
C. Zongzi comes in many flavors, such as sweet red bean and savory pork.
D. For many Chinese people, these customs are not just old traditions but living parts of daily life.
E. During the Dragon Boat Festival, people also take part in other activities.
F. The Spring Festival is celebrated in many countries around the world.

Sure everyone who uses social media enjoys ____51____ their friends and viewing entertaining things, but how come children receive all of the blame for abusing it? Parents should really think about how social media can help children and teens learn and grow in the real world rather than it just being another ____52____.
Social media as a whole has both positive and negative aspects, but after all of the feedback from pre-teens, teens, and parents is put together, it shows that media is actually helping the newer generations in their lives.
