From fitness tracking to sustainable fashion and home appliances, innovative products are changing the way we live. Here are three newly-launched items that combine smart technology with everyday practicality.
ON TRACK
Screenless fitness trackers are the new trend in wearable workout gear. The first new Fitbit since 2023 enters that market, which competitors like Whoop and Oura have muscled into in recent years. The Fitbit Air is considerably cheaper than those options, and integrates with Google’s updated Health app. The tracker covers basic metrics like heart rate, blood oxygen and motion data during activity and sleep. All data is processed in the app, with an AI coach available for an additional $7.99 per month.

GOOD TIMING
If time is running out to meaningfully slow down climate change, here’s a watch to both monitor the countdown and also feel slightly better about it. Detrash is a British watchmaking brand using recycled ocean plastics, steel and fashion industry offcuts(边角料) to create its timepieces. The watches—from dress to dive styles—come in at under £500. Most lines are limited editions, so if you see one you like, time is probably running out.
Detrash ‘Midnight Flamingo’

PLASTIC PROGRESS
Up to 500,000 tonnes of textile microplastics enter the oceans every year, much from washing machines. Now, effective microplastic filters(过滤器)are being introduced, including a 2025 Moonshot Prize winner. Developed by Bristol-based Matter, the Regen filter can be built into machines or bought separately and installed at home. The company claims 97% effectiveness. It needs emptying every six weeks, with no replacement filters required.

Aged 17, Jessica Huie found herself with “no sense of purpose” after dropping out of school. Her parents were “devastated”, her friends were going off to university, “and everybody had decided that my life was over at this point”.
Today, aged 34, as she receives an MBE for entrepreneurship(企业家精神), London-born Huie, founder of multicultural greeting card company ColourBlind Cards, said the recognition was significant not for where she is today, “but probably the distance I have travelled”. Praised for her work mentoring young entrepreneurs, Huie, like the majority of honours recipients, is one of the many extraordinary ordinaries, those who are not household names, but whose quiet achievements have made a difference. They include school caretakers, charity fundraisers, foster carers and hospital volunteers, to name just a few, from the Scilly Isles to the Outer Hebrides.
Huie’s “epiphany(顿悟) moment” came when her daughter, Monet, was seven and led her to give up a career in public relations to start ColourBlind Cards. “She didn’t like her hair. She wanted straight hair. She has this beautiful afro(蓬松的) hair and I went looking for a card which would depict a black or brown-skinned princess, to send a message to her that ‘you are perfect just as you are’. And there was a complete absence of anything in the high street which represented anyone of color.”
Today, her cards sell in Asda and Clinton Cards, and she has expanded into South Africa and just launched in the US. “The cards aren’t about race in any way; they just have images of people of various colors, particularly the black and mixed-race community,” she said. In the process, she has discovered “my purpose on this planet is to share the fact that with resilience, determination and hard work, anything is possible”.
24. What can we learn about Jessica Huie at 17?
A. She won wide support from her family. B. She gave up college due to poor health.
C. She dreamed of running a card business. D. She was trapped in a tough life situation.
25. Why does Huie value her MBE honor?
A. It witnesses her growth. B. It proves her leadership.
C. It helps her attract partners. D. It makes her a public figure.
26. What directly inspired Huie to set up ColourBlind Cards?
A. The market demand for colorful cards.
B. Her leaving a public relations company.
C. The lack of proper greeting-card products.
D. Her desire to battle against racial prejudice.
27. Which of the following can best summarize the text?
A. From family rejection to public influence.
B. From teenage hardship to business success.
C. A company’s effort to promote cultural diversity.
D. An entrepreneur’s struggle against social barriers.

Visit any antique store and you’ll encounter artifacts from the past: photographs, letters and even a brochure from the 1964-65 World’s Fair. These objects have managed to survive for decades or even centuries. Why? One of the reasons is that they’re physical.
But what about the life cycle of non-physical formats, like digital information? For thousands of years, we’ve known about history from the artifacts that have survived. They serve as the media that deliver the information. At the time of creation, no attempts were made at intentional preservation, yet physical materials have a chance of surviving and acting as the historical record that writers of biographies, historians, and novelists rely on. Traditionally, libraries have shouldered the responsibility of organization, preservation, and access to information. They digitize the physical materials so that researchers can quickly search and access the resources conveniently. However, such selfless devotion may result in an embarrassment for librarians.
Many people claim libraries are less vital now. They hold up a cell phone, saying, “It’s all in here.” But how was that universality of access made possible and, perhaps more importantly, how is it maintained? Who is managing what is preserved? When it comes to digital information, the terrifying answer can be: if not librarians, then no one. Unlike stable tangible (有形的) materials, digital information needs constant professional care. Without librarians’ careful preservation, plenty of the digital content will disappear completely.
Even when a digital object is preserved, it may face a hidden problem: the information inside may be lost. As technology develops, old storage formats will become obsolete, making saved digital files useless. Without regular digital data migration, future historical records may come to an abrupt end when digital formats replace traditional ones.
As a librarian whose day job involves managing special collections and digital assets, I share the same worry. I’d be lying if I said a comprehensive solution currently exists. Fortunately, numerous librarians are dedicated to discovering, sorting and preserving digital information. Their efforts ensure that future researchers may find the digital world a challenging place to do their work, but not an impossible one.
28. What gives tangible materials an advantage over digital ones?
A. They are better protected by librarians. B. They make information more accessible.
C. They provide more reliable historical records. D. They can survive without intentional protection.
29. What can we learn about librarians in the digital age?
A. Their crucial efforts are often underestimated.
B. Their traditional responsibilities are disappearing.
C. They focus primarily on special physical collections.
D. They have found a universal solution to digital crisis.
30. What does the underlined word "obsolete" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Easy to use. B. Out of date. C. Hard to find. D. High in price.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Efforts are needed to save tangible cultural artifacts.
B. Librarians play a key role in digitizing ancient materials.
C. Digital information requires continuing care to remain usable.
D. Digital resources have made libraries unnecessary for research.
D
Food markets have experienced considerable instability in recent years. Global warming is causing droughts, soil desertification, and extreme weather. Yet the fundamentals of food production were last transformed in the mid-20th century. Fortunately, global investments in agricultural innovation are on the rise. Funds for agritech companies reached $16.2 billion in 2025. Of this, $9 billion went to new research into boosting farm yields, up from $2.5 billion in 2016. The focus of sustainability efforts is switching from preventing climate change to dealing with it and finding solutions.
Scientists are developing alternatives to the pesticides and fertilizers that have dominated modern agriculture since the Green Revolution of the mid-20th century, based on a better understanding of plants themselves. B-COS, a team from Ghent University, is genetically engineering bacteria to produce a special kind of molecule(分子). Tomato and potato plants sprayed(喷洒) with the molecules are tricked into believing they are under attack and activate their natural defenses against infection. B-COS is applying this approach to two new products: one to improve growth and drought tolerance, and another which it claims can reduce disease incidence by 40–50%.
Naturally, there are also companies exploring the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. The general idea of this combination is called “precision agriculture”, which is to help farmers connect everything from the environmental conditions of individual fields to the genetic sequences(序列) of the bacteria present in the soil, and those of the plants themselves. This is then run through AI models that make predictions about the best conditions and treatments to achieve the highest yields or produce the highest-quality crops.
“It is going to show us what’s going on in each square metre of the fields, such as temperature, water and carbon absorption,” says Mr. Anders, a managing partner of an agritech company.
There is still a long way to go. In 2024, agricultural tech companies attracted just 1.3% of global early-stage venture-capital funding despite agriculture accounting for about 4% of global GDP. But if high-tech innovations still make their way, and the funds keep flowing, a new age of precision agriculture is coming.
32. What is highlighted concerning agricultural investment in paragraph 1?
A. Its instability. B. Its source. C. Its influence. D. Its shift.
33. Why did the B-COS team spray the molecules on tomato and potato plants?
A. To evaluate disease tolerance. B. To eliminate harmful substances.
C. To boost natural resistance. D. To protect healthy plants.
34. What does “precision agriculture” contribute to?
A. Accurate market forecasting. B. Efficient harvesting techniques.
C. Sufficient genetic information. D. Reasonable agricultural planning.
35. What is the author’s purpose in presenting the data in the last paragraph?
A. To call for greater investment. B. To warn of potential risks.
C. To cast light on the achievements. D. To give credit to the companies.

Meanwhile, children must be taught not to share private details such as home addresses, school names and daily schedules. ____38____
Warning children against hidden online dangers is equally necessary. As would-be young influencers start gaining visibility, they may be targeted by scams that aim to steal personal data. ____39____ They also need to recognize ill-intentioned strangers and dangerous behavior, such as frequent personal messages, requests for secrecy, or pressure to share private photos.
Actually, children’s wish to create online content is a way to express their identity and creativity.
____40____ With proper parental guidance, young creators can build their voice without compromising their safety.
A. These measures can effectively minimize online risks.
B. However, this pursuit comes with potential digital risks.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a May morning, Colt Johnson, a 26-year-old electrician from Idaho, set out alone on a remote hike in Arizona's Superstition Mountains. Accustomed to cool, shaded paths back home, he badly underestimated the desert heat. After five hours, he was hopelessly lost and out of water, lightheaded and shaking. He texted his wife Malia for help, but the signal was dead. All he had were candies, an emergency handgun, and the thought of Malia and 3-year-old daughter Della.
Desperate, Colt fired two shots. No response came, so he fired two more half an hour later, his arm weak with exhaustion. The sound echoed across rocky hills and reached Zeto Jr., a 57-year-old retired firefighter, who was hiking nearby. At first he took it for hunting, but when he heard two more shots half an hour later, his 30 years of rescue experience enabled him to identify it as a standard distress signal. Zeto, who always carried extra water, sports drinks and first-aid supplies from years of rescue experiences, immediately headed for the sound.
About 45 minutes later, Zeto found Colt lying on his side, semi-conscious and slurring(含糊地说) his words. He gave small sips of water and sports drink — too much fluid too fast would worsen his condition, he knew.
Colt kept repeating the names “Malia” and “Della”. Zeto checked Colt’s offline map and figured they were roughly three miles from the trail-head where Colt’s car was parked. “We’ve got to move,” he said firmly. “Every minute counts in this heat.”
The two began to descend(下山) the mountain slowly. Zeto slung Colt’s arm over his shoulder and half-carried him over rocks and winding paths. Within half an hour, Colt had drunk three quarters of Zeto’s water, yet grew weaker. Shivering with severe heat exhaustion, Colt sat down several times, closed his eyes and refused to move.
Zeto knew these were warning signs of life-threatening heat stroke. Though tired and thirsty, Zeto refused to sit down. “If I give in, it’s over for both of us,” he thought. He’d seen too many hikers surrender(屈服)to the heat too soon when they were miles from safety.
Paragraph l:
As Colt sank onto a rock again, Zeto searched for the right words to pull him back.
Paragraph 2:
It was nearly dark when they finally reached the parking lot.

范文一
Dear Editor,
I am writing to share my opinion on which non-academic class our school should add to our weekly timetable. Among the three, I strongly recommend Physical Education (PE).
For one thing, most of us have spent years sitting at desks, with our eyesight worsening and energy quietly dropping. A regular PE class would finally guarantee us the weekly exercise we clearly need. For another, PE builds far more than strong bodies --- it teaches teamwork, perseverance and fair play, qualities that benefit us long after school.
I hope this view finds space in our school English newspaper and sparks a discussion on campus. Thank you for reading!
Yours sincerely ,
Li Hua.
Paragraph 1:
As Colt sank onto a rock again, Zeto searched for the right words to pull him back. "Hold on! Think about Malia and Della. They are waiting for you," Zeto said firmly, constantly dabbing Colt's neck and wrists with a cool wet cloth from his first-aid kit to bring down his temperature. At the sound of these familiar names, Colt's dull eyes flickered with a faint spark. He nodded slowly, let Zeto heave him to his feet, and stumbled onward, every step a battle against the burning heat and his own failing legs.
Paragraph 2:
It was nearly dark when they finally reached the parking lot. Zeto settled Colt into the passenger seat of the car and dialed 911. Though exhausted himself, he kept fanning Colt and talking to him steadily until paramedics arrived. After a quick check, Colt was confirmed out of danger. As medical staff loaded him into the ambulance, Colt grasped Zeto's weathered hands tightly, his voice thick with gratitude. He knew he would never have made it down that mountain alone --- it was a stranger's quiet selflessness that had carried him to safety, and the thought of Malia and Della that had kept his feet moving.

Great traditional mexican silver brought in big crowds last week, and earlier today, people enjoyed the chinese writing art show. I'm confident it'll be another success. Definitely, our east meets west art museum isn't just about telling the rich history of our traditions or showing the unique designs by different skilled people. What we are trying to do is show all kinds of art from around the world. Should we bring the group together in the show room at eight thirty tomorrow? I think half an hour earlier would be Better, and I recommend giving them an hour to share their opinions on their favourite artworks. That will be a good start. okay? We'll finally show the group that is not just about seeing different styles of works, but understanding how art connects cultures. Today, let's talk about a remarkable invention from M. I. T. Engineers have created a robot that looks like a bird, but can dive into water, swim around and then fly back into the sky. Unlike traditional underwater robots that remain hidden, this one can move freely between air and water, making IT ideal for expLoring coastal areas. The research team LED by mechanical engineer saffy studied nearly one hundred species of diving birds, including puffs, to understand their wing movements, diving angles and tail functions. By copying these natural designs, they built a lightweight, waterproof robot that can perform complex motions. Currently, the robot is still being tested in the lab, but the researchers are optimistic their ultimate goal is descended over longer distances to monitor ocean habitat, which could greatly reduce the need for expensive research PS. They believe this robot will open new doors for marine biology, especially in hard to reach areas where traditional equipment fails. Good morning, everyone.
