Ivy and Mia had been close best friends since primary school. But as they grew older and entered middle school, a quiet change came between them.
Mia stood out in after-school activities. She was a talented singer and won everyone’s admiration (崇拜). Teachers praised her warmly, and friends gathered around her, asking her to ____13____. Ivy stood aside, watching, and felt ____14____. She thought to herself: Why does everyone like Mia? Mia, however, noticed nothing and carried on as usual.
Ivy recognized an uneasy feeling inside her every time the whole class cheered for Mia. No matter when she compared herself with Mia, a ____15____ rose in her heart. Why can’t I be that excellent? Jealousy (嫉妒) grew silently in her heart, like a dark shadow.
One day, Mia ran to Ivy and said excitedly, “I’ve been chosen for the inter-school singing competition!” Ivy’s mind went blank. She ____16____ a smile. “That’s great” was all she said. That night, Ivy sat alone in her room. Why not me? Am I not good enough? Such sad thoughts filled her mind.
She started avoiding Mia. Their talks became short and cold. She shied away from meeting Mia’s eyes, ____17____ her true feelings would be found by Mia. Noticing the distance between them, Mia asked softly, “Did I hurt you? You seem distant.” Ivy hesitated, her heart beating fast, and told Mia how she felt.
Mia was ____18____ but smiled gently. “To be honest,” she said, “I’ve always admired you. I might get a lot of attention effortlessly (不费劲地), but you have the power to keep growing little by little. We are not competitors. We are just different.”
Over time, the ____19____ in Ivy’s heart disappeared. Ivy finally realised: Jealousy is not born of others’ success — it comes when we fail to see our own value. And once we learn this, there is no need to ____20____.

(A)
____21____ Li Hua prefers quiet sea creatures. He wants to see animals that change colours under lights and move gently in the water.
____22____ Tom is studying unusual fish. He is curious about the creature whose dads play the main role in keeping their young safe before they are born.
____23____ Amy hopes to see social sea animals. She loves watching them perform different shows and pick up new tricks quickly.
A. The Blue Whale
The blue whale is the largest and heaviest animal on Earth. It can weigh as much as 200 tons, about equal to 33 elephants. It lives in all oceans except the Arctic Ocean. Even though it is huge, it feeds on some of the smallest animals in the sea, eating around four tons every day. Blue whales can live up to 90 years.
B. The Dolphin
The dolphin is one of the cleverest animals in the sea. It lives in groups. Dolphins call their friends with special “names” and love playing in the water. They jump out of the sea, ride waves and even blow bubbles for fun. Dolphins are friendly to people and can learn tricks quickly. Visitors can watch their wonderful shows and take photos with them.
C. The Seahorse
The seahorse is one of the strangest-looking fish in the ocean. It is tiny, only a few centimetres long, and swims very slowly. Its head looks like a horse’s, and its long tail holds onto seagrass so it will not get washed away. What makes it truly special is that the father seahorse, not the mother, carries the babies.
D. The Jellyfish
The jellyfish looks like a beautiful umbrella floating in the water. It has no bones, no brain and no heart, but it has lived in the oceans for over 500 million years. In the evening, the tank lights turn it pink, blue and purple, like a living light show. Visitors love standing quietly in front of the tank and watching it drift slowly.
(B)
My father had worked at the same furniture factory for eighteen years. He knew every machine by heart, and he could judge whether a chair was well made simply by running his hand along its edge. Then, on a rainy Monday morning in March, the factory announced it was shutting down. My father came home early that day, still in his blue work uniform, and sat in the kitchen without saying a word for nearly an hour.
In the weeks that followed, our house grew strangely quiet. My father sent out application (申请) after application, but the replies, when they came at all, were short and discouraging. He had spent his entire adult life making furniture with his hands, and now he felt those hands were useless. Some nights I heard him get up long after midnight and stand by the window, staring out into the empty street.
One Saturday, I brought home a broken wooden stool I had found in the school storeroom. “Nobody wants it,” I said. “They’re going to throw it away.” My father took it, turned it over twice, and ran his thumb along a deep crack (裂缝) in one of its legs. “This isn’t broken,” he said quietly. “It’s just waiting.”
For the next three days, he worked on that stool in the narrow space behind our garage. He carved a new leg from an old piece of oak (橡木), sanded every surface until it gleamed (闪亮), and painted the whole thing a soft green. When it was finished, it looked better than it ever had when it was new. My mother placed it in the living room, and for the first time in weeks, my father smiled.
That summer, he began repairing furniture for our neighbours—first a single chair, then a table, then an entire living-room set. Word spread quickly, and by autumn he had rented a small workshop and hung a hand-painted sign above the door. He often says now that losing his old job was the hardest thing he ever faced, yet he also thinks that without it, he would never have discovered the man he was capable (有能力的) of becoming.
24. What happened to the author’s father in March?
A. He was promoted to manager of the factory.
B. He lost his job when the factory closed.
C. He opened a small workshop of his own.
D. He was sent to work in another city.
25. How did the father behave in the weeks after the factory was shut down?
A. He quickly found a better-paid job.
B. He remained cheerful and full of plans.
C. He was silent, discouraged and unable to sleep well.
D. He refused to speak to his family at all.
26. What can we learn from the story?
A. Every cloud has a silver lining.
B. Time and tide wait for no man.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Simple household chores could help prevent dementia (痴呆) by enlarging our brain size, a new study claims. Canadian scientists found older adults who spent more time on household chores showed greater brain size. As we know, the size of a brain is a strong sign of cognitive (认知的) health. These chores, including cleaning, tidying, cooking, heavy housework and gardening, could all give the human brain a workout and prevent the condition.
“Scientists already know that physical exercise has a positive influence on the brain, but our study is the first to show that the same may be true for household chores,” said study author Noah Koblinsky. “Highlighting the benefits of household chores may motivate (激励) older adults to be more active by providing a more realistic, low-risk form of physical activity. Understanding how different forms of physical activity contribute to brain health is very important for developing ways to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia in older adults.”
The participants attended three testing visits at Baycrest Hospital in Toronto, including a health check, brain scanning, and cognitive assessment (评估). The researchers looked at the connections between household chores, brain size and cognition in a group of 66 cognitively healthy older adults between 65 and 85 years of age. Participants were asked about the time they spent on household chores, such as tidying, dusting, meal preparation and clean-up, shopping, heavy housework, gardening and yard work, home repairs and caregiving.
The study found that the older adults who spent more time on such activities had bigger brain volume, even if they did little or lots of intense workouts such as running.
As a next step, the researchers would like to assess household physical activity more objectively (客观地) using wearable technology. With additional research money, they could also plan controlled tests with the aim of increasing individuals’ household activity and studying brain changes over time.
Researchers point out that Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病) and related dementias are among the most common and expensive health problems in the world. Prevention and treatment of these disorders has been considered a public health priority (优先事项) by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Globally, around 50 million people have dementia, and there are nearly 10 million new cases every year, according to WHO.
27. What is the new study mainly about?
A. The dangers of dementia to elders.
B. The benefits of housework to the brain.
C. The methods of ensuring cognitive health.
D. The types of housework suitable for old people.
28. What is the importance of the study according to Koblinsky?
A. Finding a more realistic treatment for dementia.
B. Encouraging old people to care more about their health.
C. Offering the elderly a relatively safe form of physical activity.
D. Knowing how likely old people are to get dementia.
29. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. To repeat what the earlier paragraphs have said.
B. To provide some advice on how to prevent dementia.
C. To start talking about something different.
D. To add some background information of the study.
30. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Household Chores: Good for the Aging Brain
B. Physical Activity: A Safer Choice for the Elderly
C. Physical Activity: Helpful for Cognitive Health
D. Household Chores: A Usual Daily Task
(D)
Technology seems to discourage slow, immersive (沉浸式的) reading. Reading on a screen, particularly a phone screen, tires the eyes and makes it harder to keep one’s place, so online writing tends to be more list-like than print. The cognitive neuroscientist Mary Walt recently argued that this more skimmable way of reading is producing “an invisible, game-changing transformation” in how readers process words, because the brain’s reading circuit (神经回路) now likes the rapid learning of information better than the deeper skills of critical analysis.
We should not overplay (夸大) this risk. All readers skim. Skimming is a skill learnt in childhood. From about the age of nine, our eyes skim the page, reading only a quarter of the words properly and filling in the gaps by guessing. There’s nothing new in the fear about shorter attention spans, so far it has proved a false alarm. “Many critics have been worried about attention spans (范围) lately and see very short stories as signs of cultural decline,” the American author Selvin Brown wrote. “No one ever said that poems were examples of short attention spans.”
And yet the Internet has certainly changed the way we read. For a start, there is more to read, because more people than ever are writing. Digital writing is meant for rapid release (发行) and response: an online article begins to form comments as soon as it is published. This type can be interactive and fun, but it often treats other people’s words as materials, quickly harvested for something else. Everyone talks over everyone else, eager to be heard.
Perhaps we should slow down. People often describe reading as good for society and for personal success, but this push usually stresses “enthusiastic,” “passionate” or “eager” reading — none of which means slow, quiet learning. For a slow reader, a writing can only be fully understood by engaging oneself in the words and slowly understanding a line of thought. The slow reader is like a swimmer who stops counting the laps and simply enjoys how his body feels and moves in water.
The human need for this kind of deep reading is too tenacious for any new technology to destroy. We often think technological change cannot be stopped and it happens in one direction, so older media like “dead-tree” books are kicked out by newer, more virtual forms. However, in practice, older technologies can coexist (共存) with new ones. The Kindle has not killed off the printed book any more than the car has killed off the bicycle. We still want to enjoy slowly-formed ideas and carefully-chosen words.
Even in a fast-moving age, there is time for slow reading.
31. Which of the following statements does the writer possibly agree with?
A. “Dead-tree” books have completely disappeared with the rise of e-books.
B. New technology has greatly reduced the number of young online readers.
C. Readers can fully understand a text by immersing themselves in the words.
D. Digital writing aims to discourage public comments as soon as it comes out.
32. What does the underlined word “tenacious” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Complete B. Deep-rooted C. Well-known D. Changeable
33. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To argue that slow deep reading still has its place in the fast age.
B. To persuade people to spend more time on digital critical reading.
C. To suggest practical ways for online writers to create digital works.
D. To compare the differences between screen reading and print reading.
A Holiday That Makes You Move
Ask people what a holiday is for and most will say the same thing: to rest. Yet a growing number of travellers are packing running shoes, tennis rackets and climbing ropes instead of beach towels. They spend their days hiking, swimming and sweating, and they come home more tired than when they left. This new way of travelling even has a name: “sportcation”, a mix of “sport” and “vacation”.
The idea is simple: A sportcation combines (结合) exercise, travel and social life in a single trip. Instead of lying by a pool for a week, people sign up for three-day training camps, cycle through mountain villages or squeeze in a morning tennis class before breakfast. According to a 2026 travel trend report, bookings for sport-related holiday activities rose by nearly 40% in one year. Most participants are aged between 20 and 35, though a surprising number of newly retired people are also giving it a try.
Why is it so attractive? Firstly, office workers who sit at a desk for nine hours a day often fail to exercise during the week. A sportcation lets them “repay” the exercise they owe their bodies in a few concentrated (集中的) days. Besides, holidays spent doing nothing can leave people feeling bored or even guilty. A trip with a clear daily goal gives them a sense of achievement. What’s more, shared suffering, as any teammate knows, builds friendship faster than small talk ever does.
Doctors, however, are careful about the word “training”. They point out that the body adapts to exercise gradually, and that a sudden jump from almost no activity to four hours a day can damage muscles and joints. People who sit for long periods are especially at risk because their muscles and joints are not prepared for repeated impact (冲击). Health experts therefore suggest a “progressive” approach: choose activities that match your fitness level, warm up properly, drink enough water. A sportcation, they say, should work like a gentle reminder to the body, not a punishment for eleven months of sitting.
Exercising outdoors in green spaces has been shown to reduce stress and lift mood more effectively than exercising indoors, and a sportcation offers movement, daylight, and scenery at the same time. Perhaps that may be why so many travellers describe the experience not as a holiday they survived, but as one they finally felt.
34. What does a sportcation combine in one single trip?

taken in收留、欺骗;picked on刁难;turned down拒绝,均不符合语境。
根据后文“Jealousy (嫉妒) grew silently in her heart, like a dark shadow.”
根据上文“I’ve been chosen for the inter-school singing competition!”和后文“That night, Ivy sat alone in her room. Why not me? Am I not good enough? Such sad thoughts filled her mind.”
根据上文“Noticing the distance between them, Mia asked softly, ‘Did I hurt you? You seem distant.’ Ivy hesitated, her heart beating fast, and told Mia how she felt.”
根据上文“Jealousy (嫉妒) grew silently in her heart, like a dark shadow.”
根据上文“No matter when she compared herself with Mia, a ... rose in her heart.”和“Jealousy is not born of others’ success — it comes when we fail to see our own value”可知,Ivy的痛苦源于与Mia的比较,明白了嫉妒并非源于他人的成功,而是来自我们没能看到自身的价值这一点之后,就再也没有必要总把自己和他人做比较了,compare“比较”符合语境。
(A)
____21____ Li Hua prefers quiet sea creatures.
23. B

B 25. C 26. A

C 32. B 33. A

The table shows what students in my grade spent the most time doing during the last summer vacation. According to the survey, 45% of students traveled to new places, while 30% played games online. However, only 10% did chores at home.
From the results, we can learn that most students prefer relaxing activities, but few pay attention to learning life skills or developing good habits. In my opinion, we should spend more time doing chores and taking up new hobbies. Doing housework helps us develop independent living skills. Besides, learning a new hobby makes our vacation more meaningful.
Let’s form good habits and enjoy a colorful vacation.
