Getting Help with Parenting Makes a Difference -- at Any Age

New Oxford University study finds that parenting interventions(育儿干预)for helping children with behavior problems are just as effective in school age, as in younger children.

There is a dominant view among scientists and policy-makers. They believes, for the greatest effect, interventions need to be __21__ early in life, when children’s brain function and behavior are thought to be more flexible. However, according to the new research, it’s time to stop focusing on when we intervene with page number 0

parenting, and just continue helping children in need of all ages.

Just published in Child Development, the study is one of the first to __22__ this age assumption. Parenting interventions are a common and effective tool for reducing child behavior problems, but studies of age effects have produced different results until now.

A team led by Professor Frances Fardner __23__ data from over 15,000 families from all over the world, and found no evidence that earlier is better. Older children benefited just as much as younger ones from parenting interventions for reducing behavior problems. There was no evidence that earlier interventions are more powerful. This was based on __24__ data from more than 150 different experiments.

What’s more, their economic analysis found that interventions with older children were __25__ more likely to be cost-effective.

Professor Gardner commented: “When there is __26__ about behavioral difficulties in younger children, our findings should never be used as a reason to delay intervention, otherwise, children and families will suffer for longer.” She continued, “As for __27__ parenting interventions for reducing behavior problems in childhood, we should stick to the principle, ‘it’s never too early, never too late’, rather than ‘earlier is better’.”

The study draws the conclusion that it makes sense to invest in parenting interventions for children at all ages with behavioral difficulties, because they are no more likely to be __28__ in younger than older children, at least in the pre-adolescents.

Of course, there’s more work to be done. The experiments conducted were __29__ to pre-adolescents, to shorter-term effects, and parent-reported assessment of child outcomes. Future studies are needed that focus on adolescents, longer-term outcomes, and using multiple sources for __30__ child behavior problems.

II. Reading Comprehension

Section A

Brain’s Special Sound Skill

You’re walking down a quiet street and suddenly you hear some footsteps. __31__, it means that there’s someone around. But have you ever wondered why it __32__ to us that it’s someone else’s footsteps rather than ours?

According to a new study published in the journal Nature in September, this phenomenon results from a function in our brain to __33__ the noises we make ourselves.

In order to __34__ how our brain does this, a group of scientists from New York University in the US carried out an experiment with mice at Duke University. In the experiment, researchers __35__ the sounds a group of mice could hear, reported Science Daily.

During the first several days, the mice would hear the same sound each time they took a step. This was just like page number 1

“running on a tiny __36__ with each key playing exactly the same note”, senior study author Richard Mooney, a professor of neurobiology at Duke University, told Live Science.

Scientists found that their auditory cortex(听觉皮层)— the area of the brain that processes sound — became active at first but __37__ its response to the sound after two or three minutes when the mice became familiar with it.

“It’s almost like they were wearing special headphones that could __38__ the sound of their own movements,” David Schneider, an assistant professor at the Center for Neural Science at New York University, told HuffPost. But once the sound changed, their auditory cortex was __39__ again.

This suggests that the “sensory filter” in a mouse’s brain could help it detect __40__ sounds or abnormal noise in the environment easily after tuning out familiar sounds, according to Science Daily.

“For mice, this is really important,” said Schneider. “They are prey(猎物)animals, so they really need to be able to __41__ for a cat creeping up on them, even when they’re walking and making noise.”

As important as it is for mice’s survival, the ability to ignore __42__ noises is also useful for humans when it comes to complex tasks, such as playing an instrument.

According to Schneider, “the ability to ignore the __43__ consequences of our movement gives us the extra-cool ability to detect when we’ve got it wrong. So if I play the piano just right, I hear it, but my auditory cortex is pretty silent. But when I play it wrong, I get a(n) __44__ response.”

So, our __45__ could be telling us, “Hey, that didn’t sound right, maybe I should move my fingers a little different next time,” Schneider told HuffPost.
