My father is a local volunteer. He organizes activities to collect old books for poor kids on weekends. My mother works as a part-time story-teller for kids in the community library. My elder sister Clara, a Grade 9 student, often records short English stories for blind kids online. As for me, I usually give neighbors small cards to tell them to keep away from fire.

We are busy with our own tasks, but we always share our amazing experiences at the dinner table. We don’t aim page number 1

How Do Nationality Words Get Their Endings?

When we talk about a country, we also need a word for its people and its language: A person from China is Chinese; a person from Britain is British; a person from Italy is Italian. Most of them are formed by adding (加) a small ending, called a suffix (后缀), to the country name. Once you learn the main patterns (规律), you can often work out the correct word yourself.

The first group uses the suffix -ian or -an, and it is the largest group in English. When a country name ends in -y, we drop the final y before adding the suffix: Germany becomes German, and Italy becomes Italian. Many names ending in -a also take -ian, such as Russian, Indian, and Canadian.

The second group uses the suffix -ish. We often find this suffix in the names of peoples and languages of Europe. Spain becomes Spanish, Sweden becomes Swedish, and Finland becomes Finnish. Before we add the suffix, the spelling of the country name sometimes changes a little.

The third group uses the suffix -ese. This is a smaller group, and it appears in several well-known country names. China becomes Chinese, Japan becomes Japanese, and Portugal becomes Portuguese.page number 2
