A True Role Model around Me
True role models are not always famous people. Sometimes, they are right beside us. For me, my classmate Li Ming is a true role model.
In my opinion, his kindness and determination make him someone worth learning from. He patiently explains difficult questions to classmates, even when he is busy with his own work. Besides, when he gets disappointing results, he never gives up. Instead, he learns from his mistakes and keeps trying. His actions teach me to care for others and face difficulties with courage.
In short, Li Ming inspires me to become a kinder and more determined person.

Just then, Mr. Wang’s words echoed in her mind again. “Stay calm and check your steps instead of giving up.” Brushing sweat off her palms, she pulled herself together. She pushed aside her rising anxiety and reviewed her calculations line by line. Soon she spotted a tiny careless mistake in her figures. She corrected it quickly and got the right answer to Part Two. She tried her best to work on Part Three before the exam bell rang. She laid down her pen, a faint sense of well-earned accomplishment rising in her heart.
When the results came out the following week, Chen Xi was surprised to find her score had jumped. She gained several points from the once-frightening final function problem. Mr. Wang called her over after class and offered sincere praise. He told her courage mattered more than a perfect answer. Chen Xi stared at her test paper and fell into quiet thought. She understood fear rather than lack of ability used to hold her back. She made up her mind to get out of her comfort zone. Afterwards, she would bravely meet hard math challenges instead of escaping from them.

A Guide to Electric Vehicle Charging
Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly common, and charging them is easier than ever. Whether you’re charging at home, at work or on a long journey, choosing the right charger can save you time. Here’s a guide to three main charging options.
Level 1: Easy Charging at Home
Level 1 chargers use a standard 120-volt household outlet. Most EVs come with a charging cable, so no extra equipment is usually needed. However, charging is slow: an eight-hour charge adds only about 40 miles of driving range. This option may suit drivers who travel short distances each day and can leave their cars charging overnight.
Level 2: Faster Everyday Charging
Level 2 chargers use a 240-volt power supply at home or a 208-volt supply in some commercial settings. They add approximately 25 miles of range per hour. Many EV owners install them at home because they can charge a typical car battery overnight. Level 2 chargers are also widely available at workplaces and public locations.
DC Fast Charging: Quick Stops on the Road
Designed mainly for busy highways, DC fast chargers can add around 100 to over 200 miles of range in just 30 minutes. They are especially useful for drivers who need to continue a long journey without spending hours charging.
Before you choose, think about how far you drive and how long you can leave your car plugged in. Actual charging speeds depend on the vehicle, battery condition and charging equipment. Also, not every EV supports DC fast charging. Check your vehicle’s charging capabilities before planning your trip.
21. How much driving range can a Level 1 charger add in three hours?
A. About 15 miles. B. About 25 miles. C. About 40 miles. D. About 100 miles.
22. What do Level 2 and DC fast charging have in common?
A. They are mainly designed for charging at home.
B. They offer charging options away from home.
C. They add similar amounts of range in half an hour.
D. They use standard household outlets to charge cars.
23. Who is this guide mainly intended for?
A. EV drivers. B. Car sales. C. Business owners. D. Vehicle engineers.

Waters, a 13-year-old boy from Lehi, Utah, became fascinated with 3D printing after watching a YouTube channel about the technology. But making attractive objects was not enough for him. When he discovered MakeGood, a non-profit organization that produces 3D-printed devices for people with disabilities, he saw a chance to put his interest to practical use.
For his summer project, Waters set out to build a wheelchair for a 21-month-old girl. He spent about 300 hours designing, printing, testing and assembling it. Rather than focusing only on its appearance, he considered how the chair would fit into the girl’s daily life. It included a removable tray and space at the back for heavy medical equipment. The supports for her feet and head could be adjusted as she grew, while soft, flexible materials helped keep her comfortable. The chair was decorated in pink, her favourite colour.
“The project brings together what I love most: 3D printing and assisting people in need. It is exactly what I want to do,” Waters remarked. He particularly enjoyed assembling the separate parts, and the project gave him plenty of opportunities to develop that skill. He also credited his family with supporting him throughout the process and helping him improve his ideas.
His grandmother Charlotte hoped the experience would leave him with more than technical skills. “We expect him to bear in mind that the best legacy one can leave is to improve others’ lives. Age does not determine one’s power to make a difference; character does.” she stated. Waters plans to pursue technology-related work when he grows up and continue improving his 3D-printing skills to help more people.
24. Why did Waters get involved with MakeGood?
A. To set up his own nonprofit organization.
B. To win an award for young inventors.
C. To follow his grandmother’s advice.
D. To apply his interest to helping others.
25. Which of the following best describes the wheelchair Waters built?
A. It can be adjusted to suit the girl’s physical growth.
B. It is designed mainly to carry heavy medical equipment.
C. It is made of soft materials to reduce the girl’s pain.
D. It can change its color according to the girl’s mood.
26. What do Charlotte’s words suggest?
A. Age is a crucial factor in one’s ability to make a difference.
B. Family support is an important key to one’s success in work.
C. Even the young can contribute to society through good qualities.
D. Teenagers should gain public recognition at an early age.
27. What message does the story mainly convey?
A. Every dog has his day.
B. Roses given, fragrance in hand.
C. Actions speak louder than words.
D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Moving to a new country involves more than finding a home or a job. For many migrants in Europe, getting medical help can also be difficult. A recent report shows that they face a higher risk of certain infectious diseases than the general public. Yet language difficulties, medical costs and legal restrictions can prevent them from receiving timely tests or treatment. These barriers affect not only individual patients but also efforts to protect public health.
To address this issue, researchers conducted a study from 2024 to 2025 and examined the data collected from 30 European countries. National questionnaires provided information about health policies, official guidelines and available services for several infectious diseases. The main objective was to provide an accurate account of health-care services available to migrant populations.
The findings showed that support was uneven across countries and diseases. While most countries included migrants in plans for HIV and tuberculosis (结核病), other infections received less attention. Migrants without official permission to stay, known as undocumented migrants, were rarely mentioned in national guidance. Gaps also appeared in disease prevention. Although a medicine-based approach to preventing HIV was widely recommended, only 16 percent of countries specifically included migrants in their guidance on it. Some countries offered free tests and vaccines, but access to services still depended on where migrants lived and their legal status. Treatment was generally available, yet some countries placed restrictions on undocumented migrants.
The report also had limitations. Information supplied by countries could show whether policies and services existed, but could not fully reveal how easily migrants could use them in daily life. Differences between questionnaires also made comparisons difficult. Even so, the findings pointed to gaps in medical support. Researchers called for stronger monitoring and more reliable data to guide improvements. The goal was to turn support on paper into help that migrants could actually receive, benefiting both migrant communities and the wider population.
28. What problem do migrants face according to paragraph 1?
A. Difficulty in finding jobs. B. Barriers to getting medical care.
C. A lack of places to live. D. Limited access to education.
29. What is the purpose of the study conducted in Europe?
A. To compare health-care costs across 30 European countries.
B. To collect official data on infectious diseases in Europe.
C. To describe health-care services available to migrants accurately.
D. To apply new methods to treating infectious diseases in Europe.
30. What does the underlined word “uneven” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Uneasy B. Unclear C. Unstable D. Unequal
31. What do researchers recommend in the final paragraph?
A. Offering free tests and vaccines in more countries.
B. Providing language support during tests and treatment.
C. Improving monitoring and collecting more reliable information.
D. Including more diseases in national health guidelines.

For centuries, people have dreamed of plants that shine in the dark. Researchers at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences in London have brought that dream closer to reality by introducing genes from light-producing mushrooms into tobacco plants. The technology has also been applied to petunia (矮牵牛) plants. Their soft green light is visible in darkness but much weaker than that of an electric lamp. No electricity is needed. Yet being able to see a plant in a dark room is different from being able to read by its light.
Earlier experiments using firefly genes required special chemicals from outside. Once the supply stopped, so did the light. Karen Sarkisyan, a researcher on the team, and his colleagues explain that the mushroom-based system uses caffeic acid, a substance plants naturally produce, in light-producing reactions. Plants thus use their own materials without repeated additions of special chemicals. The system links their glow with natural processes inside them. This connection gives the light a value beyond its appearance, making the plants useful research tools.
The team observed changes in brightness as the tobacco plants developed. Older leaves generally gave off weaker light, while injuries caused changes around damaged areas. These findings suggest that brightness reflects activities inside plants rather than simply showing how much light they can produce. Comparing light patterns over time and under different conditions can help researchers understand growth and responses to stress. The plants thus offer a way to follow internal changes that might otherwise be difficult to observe.
Looking ahead, Sarkisyan points to two goals: increasing brightness and developing tools for studying living things. Brighter plants might eventually replace some garden lamps, while changes in their light could provide information about plant life. However, outdoor use raises further questions. Insects visiting at night might respond to the glow, possibly affecting other animals in local food chains. These effects require careful study before the technology is widely used outdoors.
32. How do scientists make tobacco and petunia plants give off light?
A. By growing them alongside light-producing mushrooms.
B. By adding genetic material from certain mushrooms.
C. By changing the genes that control their natural color.
D. By exposing them to green light for longer periods.
33. According to Sarkisyan, what makes the mushroom-based system different from the earlier one?
A. It needs fewer chemicals for its light-producing reactions.
B. It continues shining when it receives chemical supply from outside.
C. It produces light bright enough to replace ordinary lamps.
D. It uses materials the plants naturally produce to keep them shining.
34. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Plants give off more light as their leaves gradually grow older.
B. Plants produce light mainly around their damaged areas.
C. Changes in plant light can provide clues to their condition.
D. Different light conditions help researchers improve plant growth.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Shining Plants: New Possibilities and Questions for the Future
B. Plant Lamps: New Possibilities and Limits for Garden Lighting
C. Plant Research: New Tools and Methods for Studying Growth
D. Glowing Plants: New Light and Its Effects on Local Wildlife

Study Habits Really Matter
Effective studying is not necessarily a matter of spending longer at your desk. What matters is how well you use the time available. 36. ______
Choose a quiet environment.
37. ______ Your dorm room, for instance, may feel comfortable, yet a nearby screen can compete for your attention. A library offers an alternative, provided you choose an area where interruptions are unlikely.
Bring everything you need, nothing you don’t.
Even in a suitable environment, unnecessary items can prevent you from focusing on the task. Your phone, for example, may tempt you to check messages whenever the work becomes demanding. 38. ______ At the same time, make sure you have the books and materials you need, so that searching for a missing item does not interrupt your study session.
39. ______
Notes are most useful when they reflect your understanding rather than reproduce the textbook. After reading a section, set it aside and summarise the key ideas in your own words. Then explain them aloud as if you were teaching someone else. Any point you struggle to explain signals a gap that deserves further attention.
Make group study purposeful.
Working with classmates can reveal problems you might fail to notice on your own. Keep the group small and agree on a specific task before you begin. When everyone settles on the same answer, it is tempting to move straight on. 40. ______ Ask each member to explain how they reached that answer without referring to their notes. If someone cannot explain the reasoning, return to the point of difficulty before continuing.
A. Keep your notes in a clear order.
B. Go beyond simply copying notes.
C. A familiar setting is not always one that supports concentration.
D. Yet a shared answer may hide differences in understanding.
E. Agreement can give a group confidence to take on more challenging tasks.
F. Keeping it out of sight makes it easier to resist the urge to check it.
G. The following adjustments can help you make your study more effective.

A True Role Model Around Me
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Chen Xi, a reserved girl from Class Three, always scored average in math. Her results were passable, but never impressive enough to make her proud. In every exam, she could breeze through the front pages easily, yet she would freeze at the final function problem. Its long wording seemed frightening, so she never bothered attempting it. She would simply put down her pen and wait for the bell — her comfort zone.
Things took a turn this month. The mid-term paper was more challenging than usual. Chen Xi worked slowly and cautiously, double-checking her answers. When she flipped to the last page, her heart raced. The tricky final question had three sub-parts. Glancing at Part One, she blinked in surprise. It was a direct function-domain (函数定义域) problem, a type Mr. Wang had gone over on the blackboard the week before. Familiar with the procedures, she knew exactly how to solve it.
Her pulse quickened. Though her hand trembled slightly, she grasped her pen and jotted down step after step. A neat, correct answer emerged, and a faint smile tugged at her lips. For the very first time, she had made headway on the dreaded final problem, which marked a promising breakthrough.
Part Two was more demanding, asking for the function’s maximum value. Reading it twice, she got momentarily stuck. Then a memory flashed across her mind. Mr. Wang had once drawn a parabola (抛物线) on the blackboard and told the class, “For any quadratic function, always start with its vertex (顶点).” Taking a deep breath, she set about calculating.
The wall clock ticked away. Chen Xi worked methodically, writing down the vertex formula and plugging in the figures. Though the calculation dragged on, she refused to back off. Thrill rather than fear welled inside her — she was working out a puzzle she had always shied away from.
Soon she reached Part Two’s final step. Different approaches brought no success. Her mind went blank. Fifteen minutes were left. Nearby classmates were reviewing their papers. Sweat dampened her palms as her heart thumped wildly.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右。
