The Unexpected Check
Jack stood by the kitchen counter in his small apartment and stared at the stack (堆) of bills. He had just graduated from college and was working a low-paid job, which made it hard for him to make ends meet. He often dreamed the days in the old house owned by Mr. Thompson, where he had lived before.
Mr. Thompson’s house was a special place. Every tenant (租户) felt like part of a family. Jack remembered the community dinners, the laughter in the halls, and Mr. Thompson’s kindness. He treated everyone with warmth and care.
One autumn day, Jack found a plain white envelope in his mailbox. It was from Mr. Thompson. His heart raced as he opened it. Inside was a check for $2,500 and a note.
“Dear Jack,
I’ve sold the old house and want to share some of the money with those who made it a home. Your presence brought joy to our community. I hope this helps you.
Best regards,
Mr. Thompson”
Jack felt tears of gratitude (感激). The check was like a lifeline, giving him hope. He decided to visit Mr. Thompson to thank him.
Jack traveled to the small town where Mr. Thompson now lived. He found him in a cozy cottage surrounded by flowers. “Mr. Thompson!” Jack called out.
“Jack! What a surprise!” Mr. Thompson said, hugging him warmly. Over tea and cookies, Mr. Thompson shared stories of his life and why he chose to help others. “Kindness is a gift that keeps on giving,” he said. “It’s the legacy (遗产) we leave.”
Inspired, Jack returned to the city with a new purpose. He decided to use the money to help others. He partnered with local groups to start a project that provided education and resources for children in need. The project grew, touching many lives.
Months later, Jack stood in front of a group of eager children. He realized that the check had not only helped him financially (经济上) but had also given him a new direction in life. He felt grateful for Mr. Thompson’s kindness and the chance to pay it forward.
24. Jack was facing difficulties with ________ at the beginning of the story.
A. finding a job B. paying his bills
C. moving out of his apartment D. forgetting his past
25. What did Jack use the check from Mr. Thompson to do?
A. He gave it back to Mr. Thompson.
B. He used it to move into a better apartment.

26. What lesson did Jack learn from Mr. Thompson’s kindness?
A. The importance of living in a big and warm community.
B. The value of helping others and paying kindness forward.
C. The power of financial support and helping each other.

According to classic economic theory, the higher the reward, the better the expected performance. As a result, we could expect the best performance at the most important moments. But why do we so often see the most talented and experienced athletes perform much worse than expected in important competitions like the Olympics?
It is not necessarily true that there’s a direct relationship between incentives (激励) and achievement. Research has shown that increased motivation (动机) beyond a certain level harms an athlete’s performance. We call this phenomenon “choking under pressure”. Greater incentives may lead to higher levels of arousal (兴奋). The relationship between performance and arousal looks like an inverted-U shape, meaning that performance is the best at certain levels of arousal and drops with over-arousal.
The desire to perform as well as possible is thought to create performance pressure. Many studies have shown that increased pressure has a bad effect on athletes’ performance in skill-based games. When people overthink or consciously monitor each step, the drop in performance happens.
Beyond the pressure coming from important competitions, another thing that may add pressure is the level of expectations. An experiment suggested that high audience expectations harm performance in a skill-based task. For example, one of the most famous biathletes in history, Martin Fourcade, said it was very emotional for him to compete in his home country and also much harder than competing abroad because of greater expectations.
We tested this home disadvantage by using data from biathlon (冬季两项) competitions over 17 years. We have found that the most titled athletes miss a lot more shots when competing in their home country compared to when they compete abroad. The most reasonable explanation likely relates to the level of expectations from the homeland.
There are several ways to reduce stress, such as a countdown or taking a deep breath before the task. But the base for any solution is to realize that stress affects performance. Choking under pressure can happen to the best athletes and it’s not a shame to admit it. The more athletes know about the effect pressure can have on them, the more likely they are to succeed at the highest level.
27. What can we learn from “choking under pressure”?
A. The higher the reward, the better the expected performance.
B. Better achievement in games results from a drop in pressure.
C. Arousal beyond a certain level harms an athlete’s performance.
D. Athletes’ performance in games has something to do with their training.
28. To deal with pressure, the athletes should first ________.
A. avoid the possible feelings of pressure
B. share their worries with friends and coaches
C. try their best to succeed at the highest level
D. recognize the effect of stress on performance
29. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Why Do Top Athletes Choke Under Pressure?
B. How Do Top Athletes Deal with Stress?
C. Why Do Athletes Perform Worse at Home?
D. What Role Does Arousal Play in Competitions?
D
Mindfulness Matters
In recent years, some schools have begun to introduce meditation, or mindfulness training, into their classrooms. During mindfulness training, students may be asked to sit quietly and observe their own thoughts and feelings to avoid being controlled by them. Mindfulness training can help students overcome anxiety, control their behavior, and improve their ability to pay attention in class. Students are expected to learn how to meditate in order to reduce stress and do better in their schoolwork.
Among schools that already teach meditation, the results have been positive. In one study, teachers reported that after five weeks of mindfulness practice, their students were more focused. They also participated more fully in class. A middle school in San Francisco reported that a student meditation program led to higher attendance rates and better grades. Another study suggested that meditation helped students perform better on tests by improving their working memory and reducing their anxiety.
Many supporters believe that meditation training programs can also help students overcome stress. For example, Headstand is a mindfulness education program designed to help students overcome anxiety. A study concluded that ninety-eight percent of participating students felt less stressed after they completed the Headstand program. In another study, researchers in New Haven, Connecticut, followed students who participated in meditation and yoga classes three times a week. They found that after each class, participants had lower levels of cortisol, a stress hormone (激素), in their bodies.
Despite the positive results seen so far, critics also point out that much of the current research is not rigorous enough. Associate Professor Tamar Mendelson agrees that research on meditation in children is still in its early stages. However, even she insists that she has seen the positive impact of meditation on children. Others express worries that meditation is not a valuable use of class time. But many disagree. Denise Pope, a professor from Stanford University, says, “This is something teachers can do immediately. You get a lot of bang for your buck and anyone who is against it isn’t thinking clearly.” Indeed, additional studies will surely strengthen our understanding of the benefits of mindfulness.
Although still in its early stages, research shows that meditation can help students learn to deal with anxiety and stress. As an added bonus, students of mindfulness training also report better concentration and gains in their academic performances. Therefore, meditation should be a part of every student’s school day. Participating in “stillness” can be just as productive as other school-related activities.
30. Why do some schools introduce mindfulness training into classes?
A. To control students’ working memory. B. To reduce students’ stress and anxiety.
C. To increase students’ attendance rates. D. To research students’ thoughts and feelings.
31. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Mindfulness training is not a valuable use of class time at school.
B. Mindfulness training is more productive than other school activities.
C. Students felt more stressed after joining yoga classes three times a week.
D. Students paid closer attention in class after weeks of mindfulness practice.
32. What does the underlined word “rigorous” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Strict and careful. B. Creative and new.
C. Harmful and dangerous. D. Popular and useful.
33. The writer probably agrees that ________.
A. further studies will prove the benefits of mindfulness training
B. students will become more talented with mindfulness training
C. doctors will do research on the spread of mindfulness training
D. mindfulness training decides students’ mental and physical health

阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Sharing Is Not Always Caring
Social media has a lot of benefits, and one of them is that it’s now really easy to share our news with others. Posting on social media is a really quick way to get information out — before we know it, the news may have been shared with hundreds, thousands or even millions of people. Whether sharing does good or harm mainly depends on the way we use it, which is closely connected to our social responsibility.
When it’s OK to share
It’s now really common for people to share posts on social media. The platforms are set up so that it’s very easy to pass on information to a much wider audience, whether this is through text, image, audio or video. One click and the message is out there for the whole world to see. Responsible sharing brings positive results, and when this happens, people can leave helpful comments.
This can produce great results — especially if it’s something that can help people. For example, many charities have been able to do public good and increase donations through social media. This is exactly how ordinary people fulfill small social duties online.
Sometimes we want our news to be shared because it’s something we’re celebrating, like the birth of a new baby, or the fact that we’ve just passed an exam. It could be a picture of ourselves that we really like, and we want others to share our joy. Such positive sharing warms online communities. It helps people build stronger connections and encourages them to spread kindness to each other.
When it’s NOT OK to share
Online sharing isn’t always caring. In fact, lots of social media posts can be malicious (怀有恶意的) and nasty! These types of posts can often have a really bad effect on people. They could make them very unhappy or hurt their self-confidence.
Sometimes, when people come across these types of posts, they share without thinking about the consequences. It can be easy to think that there’s nothing wrong with sharing a social media post that came from someone else, or that has already become “viral (爆红的)”. We can tell ourselves that “I didn’t write it so I’m not responsible” or that “everyone was doing it”. These are not good enough reasons or excuses.
To practice social responsibility online, we need to check facts before forwarding (转发) unknown posts, refuse to spread harmful content, and respect others’ privacy and feelings. By being online, we must understand and accept the responsibilities that come with this — otherwise we shouldn’t be there just yet.
34. What decides whether social media sharing is good or harmful?
____________________________________________________________
35. How does positive sharing benefit online communities?
____________________________________________________________
36. What effect can sharing malicious and nasty posts have on people?
____________________________________________________________
37. Describe one example of online sharing that you have seen. Do you think it was OK to share? Why or why not?

【答案】27. C 28. D 29. A
