It not only affects future earnings but also reflects personal interests and life goals. A report from Georgetown University breaks down the economic value of different majors, looking at entry-level wages and comparing bachelor’s degree holders with those who hold graduate degrees. Not all bachelor’s degrees lead to the same income. Among entry-level workers, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) majors earn the most. Along with business, STEM is one of the most preferred choices, as it combines strong employment demand with attractive long-term pay. For those who continue to graduate school, earnings usually increase — sometimes dramatically. Sciences see the biggest jump, while arts have the smallest growth. Here’s the breakdown of average earnings and the wage increase from a graduate degree. Major Bachelor’s Average Earnings Wage Increase by Graduate Degree Engineering $80,000 25. 00% Computer $72,000 24. 60% Sciences $64,000 50. 00% Business $65,000 33. 30% Arts $48, 700 22. 90% However, a major does not determine one’s future. The top 25% of education majors can earn at least $59,000 a year, matching the bottom 25% of engineering majors. This highlights how personal effort and wise career choices matter greatly, sometimes more than the major itself. Therefore, when choosing a major, we need to take our interests, strengths and long-term life goals into full consideration, without ignoring practical value. No matter which major we choose, continuous hard work and right attitudes will always help us achieve success and realize our own value in life. 1. Why are STEM majors so popular? A. They share some core courses with business. B. They offer good prospects and competitive pay. C. They guarantee great short-term economic value. D. They mean attractive wages to mid-level workers. 2. Which major earns the most on average after graduate school? A. Sciences.  B. Business.  C. Computer.  D. Engineering. 3. What is the author’s advice to young people? A. Prioritizing the potential earnings.  B. Planning careers based on majors. C. Going all out in their chosen field.  D. Following their personal interests. B People are always shocked when they find out I own three white couches (长沙发). “But you have kids!” they say. “And pets! You must live in constant fear of stain (污渍)!” Honestly, I’m always amused by the panic they project onto my furniture. I call it “stainxiety”. And yes, I’ve felt it too. My own worst-case scenes play out daily: a chocolate chip becoming liquid on the cushion (坐垫), or my kid running away from dinner with dirty hands. My heart leaps into my throat. I picture the worst: Should I just throw the couch away? Is this the one that finally ruins it? Then I reach for the stain remover — desperately. A few moments later, the mark disappears, my heart steadies, and life goes on. I didn’t go for white couches to prove I’m fearless. I chose them because they make the room feel calm and bright. Somewhere along the way, they started teaching me how to handle small disasters without turning them into big ones. The turning point came a couple of years ago. I was on a work trip when my husband called, whispering in panic, “There’s blood everywhere.” My brain was instantly flooded with the worst images. It turned out that my son had a tiny cut and moved from cushion to cushion before anyone noticed. He was fine. The couch was fine. But I saw something wasn’t: the way my family walked on eggshells around me, afraid to mention a little mess. That was the moment I started rethinking my own relationship with stains — not to eliminate the panic, but to move through it faster. Now I buy washable slipcovers. When anxiety rises, I clean the stain, calm down, and enjoy daily life. The funny thing is, my white couches aren’t perfectly clean anymore. They’re lived-in. They tell stories of birthday parties and lazy Sundays; they’re proof that we’ve really lived here. Stains will come, and we’ll deal with them. That’s not chaos; it’s confidence. 4. What causes the author’s stainxiety? A. The couches’ getting dirty very easily.  B. The kids’ always ruining the couches. C. The white furniture’s needing replacing.  D. The house’s taking effort to keep clean. 5. Why did the author originally choose white couches? A. To make small marks more noticeable.  B. To create a peaceful living atmosphere. C. To practise a certain living philosophy.  D. To show her brave attitude to untidiness. 6. What did the author realize after the phone call? A. She could barely remove dirt.  B. She was too focused on chaos. C. Her couches were a bad choice.  D. Her panic affected her family. 7. What key lesson has the author learned? A. A full life leaves room for imperfection.  B. Confidence comes from avoiding the mess. C. Small accidents in life should be ignored.  D. Family happiness outweighs personal taste. C The moringa tree, known as the “miracle tree”, is one of the most nutrient-rich plants on the planet. Recently, a team of scientists from Brazil and the UK found that extracts (提取物) from the seeds of these trees are highly effective at removing microplastics from water. Microplastics are tiny particles (微粒) that can be as small as 1/25,000 of an inch and are pernicious, raising serious health concerns. They can get into our food and drinking water. A previous study found microplastics in 83% of tap water samples worldwide. They have also been found in the human body, including the brain and reproductive organs. The seeds of the tree serve as a natural material which causes tiny particles in water to stick together and form larger masses that can be easily filtered (过滤) out. In their study, the researchers focused on PVC microplastics, one of the most dangerous types of microplastics. The team discovered that seed extracts could remove 98.5% of these microplastics from tap water when used in filtering systems. This removal rate is nearly equal to that of alum, a commonly used chemical substance. Moreover, the scientists found that moringa seeds outperformed alum in water across broader pH ranges. A major advantage of using the seeds instead of alum is that they are renewable and biodegradable and raise fewer safety concerns. Professor Matthew Campen said replacing alum-based filtering materials with a natural product could lower the cost of removing PVC microplastics. He added that this method would also reduce the need for mining the metal used to make alum, an activity that can have negative environmental consequences. However, more research is still needed to determine whether moringa seeds work against other types of microplastics as effectively as they do against PVC microplastics. Matthew Campen expressed confidence that moringa seeds would prove effective against various types of plastics, and the team plans to conduct follow-up studies on this topic. 8. What does the underlined word “pernicious” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Invisible.  B. Harmful.  C. Simple.  D. Temporary. 9. How do the miracle tree’s seeds help remove microplastics? A. By absorbing them into the seeds.  B. By changing the acid level of water. C. By gathering tiny particles together.  D. By breaking them into smaller parts. 10. What did Matthew Campen say about the seed extracts? A. They posed no safety concerns.  B. They offered a sustainable solution. C. They cost more than chemicals.  D. They required metal mining activities. 11. What will be the research team’s focus regarding the seeds? A. Proving their lasting effectiveness.  B. Putting them into practical use soon. C. Exploring their wider applications.  D. Testing them on PVC microplastics. D Many live in quiet fear that AI will someday be the death of art. With screenwriters protesting and AI-generated works selling for millions, the future can seem rather dark. But history paints a different picture. When photography emerged in the 19th century, painters feared the worst. Around 1840, a French painter declared, “From today, painting is dead!” In truth, the camera didn’t kill painting — it forced it to evolve. Movements like Impressionism and Cubism (立体主义) arose in part from painters asking “What can I do that this new machine cannot?” The answer was to represent the world subjectively, as they themselves experienced it. Today’s artists face a harder question, because AI is a more powerful tool than the camera. But one thing AI cannot do is simply exist in the world; to live a life that is naturally unique. It cannot form relationships or build memories of its own. For this reason, human-made art in the age of AI will likely turn more personal, inseparable from the artist’s own character and experiences. We can already see this shift happening. More and more video creators are choosing to appear on camera without heavy editing to lean toward what distinguishes them: themselves. Artists will also need to keep reinventing their styles. The more you stick to a specific style, the easier it will be for AI to do what you do. Originality won’t be art’s only aim. Inimitability — the resistance to being reproduced — will become just as important. The pursuit of inimitability may take art in an unexpected direction. As AI art becomes more advanced, human artists will seek to distinguish themselves through intentional imperfection, for example, rough lines rather than polished images. Even mistakes will be key components of AI-era aesthetics (美学). The more AI can do, the more our idea of what makes us human will change, and human-made art will reflect that. 12. How did painting change with the rise of photography? A. Its styles showed less variety.  B. Its creation involved less emotion. C. It paid more attention to reality.  D. It became more personally expressive. 13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. What today’s artists need to stay productive.  B. What kind of human ability AI may develop. C. How AI’s limitations may reshape human art.  D. How human experiences affect artistic works. 14. Which quality of art will become increasingly valued? A. Being difficult to copy.  B. Keeping a fixed pattern. C. Showing unique editing.  D. Appearing highly perfect. 15. What is the author’s attitude towards AI’s influence on human art? A. Slightly critical.   B. Deeply concerned. C. Overly enthusiastic.   D. Cautiously optimistic. A map gives you certainty. You can hold it in your hands, follow its borders, and know exactly where it ends. A scientific theory tells a different story. ____16____ And that is precisely what makes science possible. Newton’s laws of motion are a perfect example. For more than two centuries, they explained the physical world with remarkable accuracy. ____17____ However, then came relativity and quantum mechanics They revealed that Newton’s laws of motion only apply on a specific scale: the slow-moving, everyday world. Newton was not wrong. His theory simply had a limited field of applicability. Within that field, it remains as reliable today as ever. ____18____ Instead, they are redefined. As our knowledge expands, we identify the conditions under which a theory applies and where it no longer does. The difficulty is that those boundaries cannot be predicted beforehand. A theory appears complete until an unexpected observation can no longer be explained by it. Here lies the paradox (悖论) of science. Every theory works until it doesn’t. What seems like a complete explanation today may simply be one that has not yet encountered the exception that challenges it. Every scientific breakthrough reveals a new truth. ____19____ People are naturally attracted to the dream of a single theory that explains everything. Yet that ideal is probably beyond our reach. ____20____ The willingness to acknowledge ignorance, welcome uncertainty, and accept the possibility of being wrong is what keeps science alive. A. Its boundaries are hidden. B. Each discovery leaves its mark. C. Great theories are rarely overthrown. D. It also reminds us that no theory is final. E. After all, every breakthrough began with creativity. F. Science advances because it remains open to revision. G. Many believed that the ultimate theory had been discovered. I used to spend years searching for passion. Actually, I had always been ____32____ — not in a grand way, but in small moments: the bread, the warmth, and a morning with no plan. I’ve never found my “passion.” Perhaps that word itself is the ____33____, too grand and too heavy. Life isn’t a ____34____ to reach the finish line, but a slow unfolding of many small moments. The numbers didn’t lie. The old Maple Street neighborhood had only one-quarter the commercial efficiency of the new downtown district. Its buildings looked worn and outdated. The solution was clear: full demolition (拆除), followed by a large commercial complex. At the city council public hearing, the young city planning director presented his plan confidently. First came the data comparing foot traffic and showing sales in each area. Next, he stopped for a while, letting the new restaurant design sink in. The flagship restaurant featured clean white walls decorated with uniform artwork. There was an open kitchen, self-service ordering machines, and a separate area for takeout food. Every part of the space was designed to be as efficient as possible. Then came the public comment period. Maggie, the owner of Harbor Diner, which had been there for 28 years, spoke about how these family-run shops held the community together. Several other shop owners spoke after her, saying much the same thing — memories, emotions, and community bonds. Miles listened politely, but his opinion remained unchanged. He thought they were just afraid of change. As required by regulations, the planning department had to conduct a site visit. Miles chose an ordinary Wednesday afternoon and went to Harbor Diner. Barely five minutes after he sat down, a man in work boots pushed through the door. Before he could say a word, Maggie called toward the kitchen, “Bacon cheeseburger, chili fries, black coffee!” The man smiled, nodded, and headed straight for his regular seat. He moved as naturally as if he were walking into his own dining room. Miles looked around, his eyes moving slowly across the wall. There were yellowed photos of the Maple Street Little League team from twenty years ago, the players smiling proudly behind a trophy (奖杯). There was also a poster for a lost orange cat. And a handwritten note said, “Mrs. Henderson’s piano Lessons. Beginners welcome.” Back in his office, something began to shift in his mind. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Two months later, Miles presented his new plan in the same city council room. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高三英语试题 注意事项: 1. 1. A 5. B 6. D 7. 根据第一段中“People are always shocked when they find out I own three white couches (长沙发). “But you have kids!” they say. “And pets! You must live in constant fear of stain (污渍)!”(当人们发现我有三张白色沙发时总是很震惊。“但是你有孩子!”他们说。“还有宠物!你一定一直生活在对污渍的恐惧之中!”)”以及第二段“And yes, I’ve felt it too.(是的,我也有这种感受。)” 根据第三段中“I didn’t go for white couches to prove I’m fearless. I chose them because they make the room feel calm and bright.(我选择白色沙发不是为了证明自己无所畏惧。 根据第四段中“But I saw something wasn’t: the way my family walked on eggshells around me, afraid to mention a little mess.(但我发现有件事不对劲:我的家人在我面前小心翼翼,一点脏乱都不敢提。)” 根据最后一段中“They’re lived-in. They tell stories of birthday parties and lazy Sundays; they’re proof that we’ve really lived here.(它们带着生活痕迹,诉说着生日派对和慵懒周日的故事;它们证明我们在这里真实地生活过。)” C The moringa tree, known as the “miracle tree”, is one of the most nutrient-rich plants on the planet. B 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第二段“Microplastics are tiny particles (微粒) that can be as small as 1/25,000 of an inch and are pernicious, raising serious health concerns. They can get into our food and drinking water. A previous study found microplastics in 83% of tap water samples worldwide. They have also been found in the human body, including the brain and reproductive organs. 根据第三段“The seeds of the tree serve as a natural material which causes tiny particles in water to stick together and form larger masses that can be easily filtered (过滤) out. 根据第四段“A major advantage of using the seeds instead of alum is that they are renewable and biodegradable and raise fewer safety concerns. 根据最后一段“However, more research is still needed to determine whether moringa seeds work against other types of microplastics as effectively as they do against PVC microplastics. Matthew Campen expressed confidence that moringa seeds would prove effective against various types of plastics, and the team plans to conduct follow-up studies on this topic. D 13. C 14. A 15. 根据第二段中“In truth, the camera didn’t kill painting — it forced it to evolve. Movements like Impressionism and Cubism (立体主义) arose in part from painters asking “What can I do that this new machine cannot?” The answer was to represent the world subjectively, as they themselves experienced it. 根据第三段中“But one thing AI cannot do is simply exist in the world; to live a life that is naturally unique. It cannot form relationships or build memories of its own. For this reason, human-made art in the age of AI will likely turn more personal, inseparable from the artist's own character and experiences. 根据第四段中“Originality won't be art's only aim. Inimitability — the resistance to being reproduced — will become just as important. 以及最后一段中“The pursuit of inimitability may take art in an unexpected direction. 根据第一段中“Many live in quiet fear that AI will someday be the death of art. 和第二段中“But history paints a different picture. 以及最后一段中“The more AI can do, the more our idea of what makes us human will change, and human-made art will reflect that. A 17. G 18. C 19. D 20. 【16题详解】 上文“A scientific theory tells a different story.(科学理论讲述的是另一个故事。)”引出科学理论与地图的不同,下文“And that is precisely what makes science possible.(而这正是科学之所以可能的原因。)” A项“Its boundaries are hidden.(它的边界是隐藏的。)” 【17题详解】 上文“For more than two centuries, they explained the physical world with remarkable accuracy.(两个多世纪以来,它们以惊人的准确性解释了物理世界。)”说明牛顿定律长期被广泛认可,G项“Many believed that the ultimate theory had been discovered.(许多人相信终极理论已经被发现了。)” 【18题详解】 上文“Newton was not wrong. His theory simply had a limited field of applicability. Within that field, it remains as reliable today as ever.(牛顿没有错。 C项“Great theories are rarely overthrown.(伟大的理论很少被推翻。)” 【19题详解】 上文“Every scientific breakthrough reveals a new truth.(每一次科学突破都揭示了一个新的真理。)”说明突破揭示新真理,下文“People are naturally attracted to the dream of a single theory that explains everything.(人们自然会被一个解释一切的单一理论的梦想所吸引。)” D项“It also reminds us that no theory is final.(它也提醒我们没有任何理论是最终的。)” 【20题详解】 上文“Yet that ideal is probably beyond our reach.(然而那个理想可能是我们无法企及的。)”说明终极理论难以实现,下文“The willingness to acknowledge ignorance, welcome uncertainty, and accept the possibility of being wrong is what keeps science alive.(承认无知、欢迎不确定性、接受犯错可能性的意愿,才是让科学保持活力的东西。)” F项“Science advances because it remains open to revision.(科学进步是因为它始终对修正保持开放。)” I used to spend years searching for passion. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Back in his office, something began to shift in his mind. He thought about the warm diner that connected all the local people, which simple numbers could never describe. He realized that a community is not only about commercial efficiency, but also about sweet memories and close ties. Those old shops were the heart of Maple Street, and he understood that what he cared about before was far from enough. Every photo and note on the diner’s walls told a story of local life. He decided to make a new plan that would keep the old neighborhood alive. Two months later, Miles presented his new plan in the same city council room. He suggested that they fix the old buildings instead of pulling them down. Some small new shops would be added nearby, but the family-run businesses like Harbor Diner could stay. He told everyone that a good city should hold both progress and its warm community spirit. He hoped his plan could balance development and people’s feelings. Most people at the meeting smiled happily and agreed with his idea. 词汇激活 行为类 ①思考:think about/reflect on/consider ②决定:decide/make up one’s mind/resolve 情绪类 ①温暖的:warm/cozy/heartwarming ②快乐地:happily/delightedly 【点睛】【高分句型1】Those old shops were the heart of Maple Street, and he understood that what he cared about before was far from enough.
