Yash Patel was fluent in four languages: English, Hindi, Gujarati, and American Sign Language. However, he believed a fifth should be added to the list: accounting (会计). “Accounting is the language of business,” Patel said. “If you want to do business, you need to know that language, or work with someone who does.”
Patel is about to graduate from the University of South Florida (USF) with a degree in accounting. His journey into accounting began nearly ten years ago when he first recognized the importance of understanding accounting.
Patel’s grandmother owns the Diana Motel in Clearwater. In 2015, struggling to make sense of her tax forms, she turned to Patel for help. “I didn’t understand it, either,” he recalled. “My family owns a business, so I figured I should learn about accounting.”
He then got a degree in accounting from St. Petersburg College. In 2023, he managed to study accounts at USF. To pay for his living costs at USF, Patel started his own business. Using a small business loan (贷款), he bought five second-hand vending machines. He placed two in a private school and three in motels, one of which was owned by his family. After his first year at USF, he sold the business because he didn’t have enough time to manage it.
Soon after, Patel joined Beta Alpha Psi, a professional organization for financial students, which helped him land internships (实习). He remembered his first career fair at USF, where he showed up in jeans and trainers. “The companies didn’t talk to me because I didn’t look professional,” he said. With the help of Beta Alpha Psi, Patel learned how to dress and present himself, which led to internships at Cherry Bekaert and Deloitte.
Looking ahead, Patel plans to complete a Master’s degree in accounting at USF and work in public accounting.
24. What can we learn about Patel from the first paragraph?

Making exercise fun is a challenge for many people who struggle to find the motivation (动机) to work out. But rather than forcing yourself to enjoy running or that gym class you once attended, the solution may lie in something more straightforward — simply choosing exercises that fit your personality, according to a recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.
To reach their findings, the study’s co-lead author, Flaminia Ronca, a professor in exercise science at University College London, and her coworkers first directed the 132 subjects, aged between 25 and 51 years old, to complete a questionnaire showing their personality types.
The study took a commonly used model that describes someone’s personality, namely outgoing people, quiet worriers, kind helpers, curious explorers, and careful planners. The researchers then ran fitness tests on the subjects and put them into two groups. One group was given an eight-week biking plan, while the control group did 10 minutes a week of stretching (伸展) exercises. Of the 132 subjects, 86 completed both pre- and post-testing either side of these eight weeks.
The study team found that, although fitness improved across all personality types for those who completed the biking and stretching programs, there was a marked difference in enjoyment of exercise. Outgoing people enjoyed the higher-intensity (强度) lab fitness tests, while quiet worriers enjoyed the home-based light-intensity workouts.
The study also showed how exercise affected people’s stress levels based on their personality. People who scored high in neuroticism, meaning they feel more anxious, experienced a bigger drop in stress levels compared with other groups.
“I think that’s quite a powerful message to give,” Ronca said. Considering the many benefits of exercise, she hoped their findings would encourage people to find forms of exercise they enjoy, making it easier to stick to a fitness routine and to improve their fitness over time.
28. In what way were the two groups different in terms of research design?
A. Their age. B. Their hobby. C. Health condition. D. Exercise type.
29. What did the study find about personality?
A. It drives people to achieve dreams. B. It shows similarities in certain ways.
C. It affects the enjoyment of exercise. D. It helps us complete more exercises.
30. What does Ronca intend to explain in the last paragraph?
A. The application of the findings. B. The background of the experiment.
C. The direction of further research. D. The arrangement for daily exercise.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Influence of Exercise on Personality B. Matching Workouts to Your Personality
C. Giving You New Motivation to Exercise D. The Benefits of the Stretching Program
D
Many parents have experienced moments when their child’s behavior makes them feel annoyed and helpless. However, new research suggests that a different solution works better.
A recent study from King’s College London found that responding (回应) to a child’s behavior with warmth and praise can not only improve their behavior but also change how their brain works. The research shows that parenting programs, which focus on positive behavior, can lead to real changes in brain activity in children with behavioral problems.
Researchers studied 78 boys with behavioral problems, aged 5 to 10. These boys, along with a control group of 35 other children, completed a reward (奖励) -learning task while having a brain scan. At the beginning, the boys showed less brain activity in the insula, a part of the brain responsible for expecting rewards, compared to other children.
The families of these boys with behavioral problems then attended a 10 — 12-week parenting program aimed at encouraging warm parenting. After completing the program, the boys were tested again.
The results were striking. Most of the boys showed more brain activity in the insula and other areas responsible for decision-making and learning. They were called “improvers”. The study also found that the parenting program changed how the boys with improved behavior learned from their experiences. They were able to make better decisions and became slower to change their expectations after a good or bad experience. They also became more practical and more aware of the difference between rewards and punishments.
This research highlights the strong influence of positive parenting on children’s behavior and brain development, showing that warmth and patience can create long-term changes in both behavior and the brain.
32. What are the families of the boys with behavioral problems asked to do in the study?
A. Give rewards to researchers.
B. Go for a medical check-up.
C. Perform warm parenting.
D. Clean up the lab every day.
33. What does the underlined word “striking” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Endless. B. Noticeable.
C. Different. D. Wrong.
34. Which is a change that happened to the “improvers”?
A. They could make well-considered choices.
B. They left a bad impression on the scientists.
C. They managed to keep their promise.
D. They learned to work hard at school.
35. What can be inferred about positive parenting according to the research?
A. It offers a hopeful message to doctors.
B. It is a challenging task for every family.
C. It requires teachers to act as a role model.
D. It produces a lasting influence on children.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The Chinese language is special because it uses characters instead 56 an alphabet (字母表). These characters represent ideas, things, or actions. Chinese words are often formed by 57 (put) different characters together, and sometimes a single character can be a word. The old 58 (sign) from Sumer and Egypt are gone, while Chinese characters have kept changing and still play 59 important part in Chinese culture.
According to a story, Chinese writing 60 (invent) by a man named Cang Jie. One day while hunting, he saw animal footprints in the snow and realized he could use different shapes 61 (show) different things. The earliest Chinese characters were simple drawings of real things. Over time, these drawings became more standardized (规范化的).
Characters can also be put together to express more difficult ideas. For example, the character for “rest” puts together the characters for “man” and “tree,” while “prisoner” is a “man” inside a square. However, these characters don’t show 62 (they) pronunciations. So, a system 63 one part of a character shows the meaning and another part suggests the pronunciation was developed.
In the 1950s, the Chinese government introduced simplified characters to make reading and writing much 64 (easy) than before. These simplified characters are now 65 (wide) used in China.

The final class of the day was PE, and Eliza was having a great time skipping (跳) rope on the sports field. Just then, the school bell rang, signaling the end of the day.
Eliza packed up her skipping rope, but her mind was focused on something else — she had to make a decision. That morning, Ms. White had asked her if she would take charge of the class bulletin board (布告栏) for an upcoming competition. Anna, the student who usually did it, was sick, and someone needed to step in. Eliza was surprised that Ms. White had chosen her. She was nervous and said that her handwriting wasn’t good enough. But Ms. White encouraged her to think it over and promised to let her make the final decision by the end of the day.
Now, as Eliza walked toward the teachers’ office, her heart raced. The thought of her handwriting being shown on the bulletin board for everyone to see made her stomach turn. She had already decided she would say no.
When Eliza reached the office door, she stood there for a moment, trying to calm herself.

高一英语参考答案、提示及评分细则
听力部分录音稿
(Text 1)
M: Where are you meeting your brother?
W: I said I would see him at the train station, but he arrived early, so I’m going to meet him in a restaurant near his hotel.
(Text 2)
W: Hi, Neil! Can you hear me OK?
M: Yes! Thankfully my camera is working this time. Oh, I see your cat is attending our meeting today!
W: Yes, the cute little thing always wants attention when I’m on business calls!
(Text 3)
W: I can’t stand the noise every time I step on the stairs, and it means there’s a safety risk.
M: I know, but the wood costs a lot nowadays, so I thought we could get new ones when the price comes down a bit.
(Text 4)
M: Don’t worry, I’ve caught it. It blew right into my hand.
W: Thank you. The hat is really expensive. I brought it in case of rain, but it won’t stay on my head in this weather.
(Text 5)
W: All right, everyone, come close together now. Jamie, smile please.
M: Wait, turn on the light — it’s a bit dark in here.
W: OK, will do. One, two, three, say cheese!
(Text 6)
M: Hello, I need to send this package to China as soon as possible. It’s very important that it gets there safely and quickly.
W: All right. We can send it by express mail.
M: Also, there is some electronic equipment inside that needs to be treated with extra care.
W: Would you like a policy to make sure you will not lose any money if it is broken? That will cost you only a few extra pounds.
M: OK, I’ll pay for that service.
(Text 7)
M: Are you unhappy that you didn’t win the Class Prize, Anna?
W: Yeah, a little bit. I could probably have done better in the final exam if I hadn’t stayed up late helping John with his college application the night before. But I’m glad I helped him. He’s got into an excellent university.
M: And second place in the class isn’t bad!
W: You’re right. And I’m honestly happy for Holly. She was the right one to win. We all saw how much time she spent on books and her notes.
(Text 8)
W: I’m going to work now. Do we have everything for the party tonight? I could drop by the supermarket on my way home.
M: Pretty much. I ordered some meat, and we have plenty of bread, salad and drinks.
W: Great. Do you think we’ll need sweets?
M: I don’t think people will expect that at a party. But get a few boxes of nice ice cream, just in case.
W: OK. What kind?
M: Everybody likes chocolate, right?
W: True.
M: How about fruits?
W: I know we’re out of bananas, so I’ll get some more of those.
M: And perhaps some strawberries. I want to make pancakes for breakfast tomorrow.
(Text 9)
M: Please welcome the star of our latest movie.
W: Thank you, Steven.
M: So why don’t you tell everyone a bit about the movie?
W: Well, I play a doctor who discovers that her patients are going missing, so she tries to find out what is happening to them. It’s about her solving that problem while also discovering things about herself.
M: You know, I was surprised you took the role. This is the first time we’ve worked together, but you’ve played a doctor twice before.
W: Yes. It’s funny, because my husband actually is a doctor.
M: So what made you want to do this film?
W: Honestly, I just wanted to work with you. You could have asked me to play a tree and I would have said yes!
M: Maybe in the next one! So, should we show everybody something from the film?
W: Yes, I think they’ve been patient long enough.
(Text 10)
W: As you all know, there’s been some problems with our office. So the purpose of this meeting today is to introduce the plan for the new look of the office. Starting next month, instead of closed sections, we will have an open office. There will be no walls. Instead, desks will be arranged in groups for each department. The desks in each department will be facing each other in groups of four or six. We feel this will help us communicate better. It will also create a more welcoming environment for customers. The department managers will still have their own offices, and each will have large windows and glass doors to make employees and customers feel welcome to come inside. We are also going to paint the walls and put in new floor. The project will start on September 1st and should take about 13 days to complete. We will be moving to the third floor during that period.

第一节
One possible version:
Dear Peter,
I’m writing to share my experience from our school sports meet held last week. I took part in the 4×100-meter relay as the third runner. When I received the baton, I sprinted with all my strength, trying to close the gap with the leaders. Though our team didn’t win, the crowd’s cheers were unforgettable.
What I valued most wasn’t the result, but the teamwork and the shared effort. It also reminded me that sometimes the joy lies in the journey, not just the finish line.
I’d love to hear about your sports experiences, too! Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
Taking a deep breath, Eliza knocked on the door. “Come in,” Ms. White called from inside. “Ah, Eliza! Have you thought about the bulletin board?” Ms. White asked. Eliza expressed her concerns about her messy handwriting. Ms. White reassured her, saying it wasn’t about perfection but about doing her best. She encouraged Eliza to focus on her creativity and positive energy. Eliza hesitated, still unsure, but Ms. White reminded her that trying, even with doubts, was what mattered most. Ms. White smiled brightly. “If you need anything, I’m here.”
After some thought, Eliza replied, “OK, I’ll give it a try.” Ms. White immediately stood up and handed her a few blank papers and markers. “We’ll start small. Let’s plan it together,” she suggested. Eliza smiled, feeling more at ease with her teacher’s support. They spent the next few minutes discussing ideas for the bulletin board. As Eliza sketched out some designs, she realized that maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all. With Ms. White’s help, what she would do was try her best to plan for the upcoming competition, and that was enough.
