It was a September day, and as usual, the halls of Pine High School were filled with excitement. Today was the first day of high school for a freshman, Jamie. Jamie had always been a bit of a shy kid, but she had always loved her studies. She made up her mind to make the most of her high school years, but she knew that it wouldn’t be easy.
As she walked down the hallways, Jamie couldn’t help but feel worried. The older students seemed so confident, while she felt small and unimportant. But Jamie was determined to succeed, no matter what challenges came her way.
It wasn’t long before Jamie was faced with a challenge. In her first week of school, she was assigned a project that required a lot of research and planning. Jamie tried her best, but she soon realized that she was in over her head. As she struggled to complete the project, Jamie began to doubt herself. She wondered if she was cut out for high school. But then, something great happened.
Jamie’s classmates began to notice how hard she was working and they started to offer her help and support. They gave her advice on how to manage her time better, and they shared their tips for getting through assignments. With their help, Jamie was able to complete the project on time and with great success.
From that day on, Jamie realized that high school was not a challenge to be faced alone. And as she grew more confident in herself and her abilities, she knew that she was destined (注定) for great things.

7. What lesson can we learn from Jamie’s story?
A. Every dog has his day. B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. Two heads are better than one. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C
It’s often said that we human beings can dream in a foreign language. Could dreaming in a foreign language improve our memory? Does dreaming in a foreign language mean we are making progress in learning that language?
Before we look at multilingual (多语言) dreams, first we need to look at sleep. The connection between sleep and language can be applied to how we learn any language, including our native language. Even adults still learn about one new word every two days in their first language. But, if we are going to remember that new word better, what matters is that we need to connect it with what we have learned. And in order to do that, we “need to have some sleep”, says Gareth Gaskell, a professor at the University of York.
It’s during sleep that the integration (整合) of old and new knowledge happens. At might, one part of our brain — the hippocampus — takes whatever new information it receives during the day and passes it on to other parts of the brain to be stored. The role that dreams play in this night-time learning process is still being studied, but “it’s entirely possible that during multilingual dreams, the brain is trying to connect the two languages”, says Marc, a researcher at a university in Bern, Switzerland.
So having multilingual dreams could mean that our brain is trying to remember a new word or phrase. However, it could also have an emotional (情感) significance. Danuta, a professor of psycholinguistics at the University of Silesia in Poland, suggests that multilingual dreams can express “fears or wishes” around learning a foreign language, including the wish to be a local speaker or to be accepted within a certain community.
We clearly still have a lot to learn about multilingual dreams, but one thing seems certain: if you’re trying to learn a new language, you can sleep on it.
8. Why does the author mention questions in paragraph 1?
A. To compare different ideas. B. To introduce the main topic.
C. To present different types of dreams. D. To discuss the human language ability.
9. What is the key element in memorizing a new word according to the text?
A. The other new words. B. The native language.
C. The gained knowledge. D. The speaking practice.
10. What can we learn about multilingual dreams?
A. They may influence people’s sleep quality. B. They can reflect language-learning feelings.
C. They are the best option to learn a language. D. They help to clear up the useless information.
11. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A novel. B. A diary. C. A guidebook. D. A magazine.
D
Looking back is a wonderful thing. It allows you to see what has led you here and, hopefully, how society has changed and improved.
Take, for instance, my career goal. First, I wanted, in 1999, to be a “farmer”, soon archaeologist, then driving instructor and somewhere along the way, footballer.
I had grown up in a football-loving family. I remember the exact moment when I said “I’m sad I can’t be a footballer” while watching the game with Dad as a pre-teen. He asked why not. “Because I’m not a boy.” He immediately responded, “You can, if you want to.” “Yeah, I suppose so,” I sighed, “but no one watches women’s football.”
Looking back, I can see exactly why I felt like that. At school, there was an unwritten rule that sports like hockey and netball were “girl” sports and rugby and football were for the boys. I’d never seen a women’s football match on TV. You see, you can’t be what you can’t see, and lack of representation leads, at best, to misunderstanding, and at worst, fear and negative opinions.
Today, the Lionesses will take on Scotland in the World Cup, and people across the world will tune in — over 950,000 tickets have been sold so far. But, although women’s football is one of FIFA’s best investments — with a pound for pound return, the majority of female players are earning under a fair wage. Some argue that’s because viewing statistics are lower than those of men’s, but the rise in support shows the demand is there. Hopefully, more investment will push female football forward.
Today, I’ll be cheering on the Lionesses, because it’ll mean talented, skillful female footballers being broadcast into millions of homes and maybe, just maybe, a little girl believing that she can also be a Lioness one day.
12. Which of the following best describes the author’s career goals?
A. Realistic. B. Changeable.
C. Consistent. D. Long-sought.
13. Why didn’t the author believe she could be a footballer?
A. She was not talented enough.
B. People lost faith in women’s football.
C. Girls were forbidden to play football.
D. She had no example to follow.
14. What can we know about women’s football from Paragraph 5?
A. It’s better paid than men’s. B. It is increasingly popular.
C. It has no market demand. D. It is not profitable.
15. What does the text mainly want to tell us?
A. Society advances with time. B. Women deserve equal rights.
C. Each goal is worth pursuing. D. Hard work always pays off.

D. A magazine.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. B 11. D

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. B 15. A

【分析】这是一篇说明文。作者通过讲述自己的职业目标的转变及女子足球运动今昔情况的对比,充分说明了社会的进步是与时俱进的。
【详解】1.细节理解题。从文章第二段中的“ First, I wanted, in 1999, to be a “farmer”, soon archaeologist, then driving instructor and somewhere along the way, footballer.”可知,首先,在1999年,我想成为一个“农民”,很快成为一个考古学家,然后是驾驶教练,在成长过程中,又想做足球运动员。所以可知,作者的职业目标是变化的。选项B与文意相符,故选B。
2.推理判断题。根据第四段中“At school, there was an unwritten rule that sports like hockey and netball were “girl” sports and rugby and football were for the boys. I’d never seen a women’s football match on TV. ”(在学校里,有一条不成文的规定,曲棍球和无挡板篮球等运动是“女孩”运动,而橄榄球和足球则是男孩子的运动。我从没在电视上看过女子足球比赛。)及“You see, you can’t be what you can’t see, and lack of representation leads”(你知道的,你不能成为你看不到的东西,而且缺乏代表性的领导)据此可推知,作者认为她不能成为足球队员的原因在于她没有可以追随效仿的榜样。选项D与文意相符。故选D。
3.推理判断题。根据第五段中“Today, the Lionesses will take on Scotland in the World Cup, and people across the world will tune in ”(如今,the Lionesses将在世界杯上对阵苏格兰,并且全世界的人们都会收看。)及“But, although women’s football is one of FIFA’s best investments — with a pound for pound return, the majority of female players are earning under a fair wage. Some argue that’s because viewing statistics are lower than those of men’s, but the rise in support shows the demand is there. Hopefully, more investment will push female football forward.”(不过,尽管女子足球是国际足联(FIFA)最好的投资项目之一,但大多数女子足球运动员的收入都低于合理水平。 B.“It is increasingly popular.”(它(女足运动)越来越受欢迎。)与文意相符。故选B。
4.主旨大意题。结合全文首段中“how society has changed and improved.”可知,社会是如何改变和进步的。及下文作者谈到自己职业目标的转换,最终提到女子足球运动今昔情况的对比,充分说明了社会的进步是与时俱进的。选项A与文意相符。故选A。
