Passage A
Last summer I took a part-time job as a “station helper” at Hulan Railway Station. My task was simple: when a passenger looked lost, I went over and gave directions. I thought it would be easy, because I had studied the subway map for a whole week before I started.
On my first morning, a young woman ran up to me with a huge suitcase. “Subway Line 2!” she said, breathing hard. I answered at once, “Go down the stairs, turn right, walk about two hundred metres, and you’ll see the sign.” She thanked me and disappeared. Twenty minutes later she was back, tired and angry. She had followed my words exactly — but I had forgotten one thing: the escalator on that side had been under repair since May. The stairs took her to a locked gate.
The second person I helped taught me an even better lesson. An old man asked me how to get to the airport. I started to list the steps: “Take the Airport Express, change to Subway Line 2 at Zhuquemen Station, get off at Zhonghua Square, and take Exit B...” After three sentences his eyes went empty, and he held up his hand. “Young man,” he said gently, “just tell me where to get on. I’ll ask again when I get there.”
That afternoon I changed my way of working. Instead of giving a long list, I gave one step at a time: “Go down these stairs, then come back and ask me again.” Passengers remembered two sentences much better than eight. I also began to walk a few steps with them and point with my whole arm, the way my grandmother used to do when I was a child. And before I said goodbye, I always asked one more question: “Is there anything else you need to know?”
By the end of the summer I had helped more than six hundred people, but the number I remember best is three. Three passengers came back to tell me they had found their way. A good direction is not a speech; it is a small, clear step that the listener can actually take. The best helpers are not those who know the most, but those who say the least at the right moment.
11. What was the writer’s job at Hulan Railway Station?
A. To sell subway tickets to passengers.
B. To help lost passengers find their way.
C. To repair the escalator in the station.
D. To carry heavy suitcases for tourists.
12. Why did the young woman come back angry?
A. She had missed her train by twenty minutes.
B. She could not understand the writer’s English.
C. The stairs led her to a gate that was locked.
D. The writer had given her the wrong subway line.
13. What does the writer mean by “his eyes went empty” in Paragraph 3?
A. The old man could not see clearly.
B. The old man became too tired to listen.
C. The old man lost interest in the city.
D. The old man was confused by too much information.
14. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The writer gave directions one step at a time after that afternoon.
B. The writer had never studied the subway map before the job.
C. Most passengers came back to thank the writer at the end of the summer.
D. The old man asked the writer to write the directions down.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to find a part-time job at a railway station.
B. Why the escalator at the station was under repair.
C. How the writer learned to give clear and useful directions.
D. How the subway lines in Hulan city have developed.

Unit 2 Transportation(Language Practice)
1. ______ to Subway Line 2 at Zhuquemen Station, and then take Exit B to the street.
A. Changing B. To change C. Changed D. Change
2. ______ late for the airport shuttle bus. It leaves at 6:30 a.m. sharp.
A. Not be B. Don’t be C. Don’t D. Be not
late 是形容词,祈使句含 be 动词时,其否定形式为 Don’t be + 形容词,故填 Don’t be。A项 Not be 缺少助动词 do,不能独立构成否定祈使句;C项 Don’t 后面缺 be,直接跟形容词 late 不成立;D项 Be not 语序错误,祈使句否定词应置于句首。B项正确。
3. ______ me carry these two heavy suitcases to the taxi stand, will you?
A. Let us B. Let’s C. Let we D. Letting us
【答案】:A
B项 Let’s 包含听话人,其反义疑问部分应用 shall we;C项 Let 后须接宾格 us,不能用主格 we;D项 Letting 为现在分词,不能构成祈使句。A项正确。
4. —Excuse me, how can I get to the Airport Express station?
—______ straight ahead, and you’ll see the sign.
A. Going B. To go C. Went D. Go
A项 Going、B项 To go、C项 Went 均不能置于该结构中作祈使句;若用 Going 则全句缺少主句,结构不完整。D项正确。
5. —May I smoke here while we wait for the bus?
—Sorry, sir. Look at the sign. ______.
A. Don’t smoke it B. Not to smoke C. No smoking D. No to smoke
公共场所的提示牌多用“No + 动名词”表示禁止,如 No smoking(禁止吸烟)、No parking(禁止停车)、No littering(禁止乱扔垃圾),简洁且不出现主语。A项多余宾语 it,且 Don’t 祈使句一般不用于标语;B项 Not to smoke 是不定式的否定形式,用于句中,不能单独作标志语;D项 No to smoke 结构错误。C项正确。
6. ______ read the timetable before you set off. Some buses stop running after 9:00 p.m.
A. Do B. Does C. Did D. Doing
【答案】:A
A项正确。
7. —Could you tell me ______ I can get to Zhonghua Hotel from the airport?
—Take Shuttle Bus Line 6, and it will stop right in front of the hotel.
A. what B. which C. how D. that
I can get to Zhonghua Hotel from the airport 结构完整,缺少的是方式状语,故用 how(如何)。
8.—Front desk. Good morning. What can I do for you?
—Hi, ______.
A. I’d like to know the shuttle bus times to the airport tomorrow morning.
B. I’m sorry to hear that your room is not ready.
C. Nice to meet you. I’m from Guangdong.
D. Thank you for your help. Goodbye.
【答案】:A
What can I do for you? A项正确。
9.—Hello, this is Zhonghua Hotel. I’m calling about the shuttle bus.
—______ Please go ahead.
A. Who’s calling, please?
B. You must have dialed the wrong number.
C. I’m afraid the line is out of order.
D. Could you call back later?
【答案】:A
May I have your name, please? A项正确。
10.—Could you put me through to the front desk, please?
—______ Please hold on for a moment.
A. I’m afraid he is out. B. Not at all. C. It doesn’t matter. D. Certainly.
Please hold on for a moment(请稍等)说明对方已同意转接,故前句应表示应允,Certainly(当然可以)最合适。A项“他出去了”会阻断转接;B项 Not at all 用于回应感谢或道歉;C项 It doesn’t matter 用于回应道歉,都与“请求转接”不搭配。D项正确。

【答案】: 11.B 12. C 13. D 14. A 15.C
原文“My task was simple: when a passenger looked lost, I went over and gave directions.”,作者的工作是看到旅客迷路就上前指路。
原文“She had followed my words exactly — but I had forgotten one thing: the escalator on that side had been under repair since May. The stairs took her to a locked gate.”,她完全照作者说的走,却因为扶梯正在维修、走楼梯到了锁着的大门,白跑一趟才生气回来。
原文“I started to list the steps... After three sentences his eyes went empty, and he held up his hand.”,作者一口气列出换乘、站名、出口等一长串信息,说了三句老人就“眼睛发空”并抬手制止,紧接着说“只要告诉我从哪里上车”,可见“his eyes went empty”形象地写出老人被过多信息弄糊涂、跟不上。
原文“That afternoon I changed my way of working. Instead of giving a long list, I gave one step at a time”,那天下午之后作者改为一次只给一步,A项与原文一致。B项错误:原文开头说他在上岗前“had studied the subway map for a whole week”;C项错误:结尾说帮助过六百多人,但“回来告诉他找到了”的只有三个人,并非“大多数”;D项错误:老人说的是“just tell me where to get on”,并没有要求写下来。
