playing basketball.Edward didn't ask if he could join, because the last time he played,
Leon's friends laughed at his poor skills and didn't want him to play again.

could not get a good grade in the next test.Leon wished that he had his brother's math
skills,so he asked Edward for help.
Looking down at his book,Edward said,"I really hope to get better at basketball.I'll
help you with math, and maybe we can practice basketball together, too."
Leon knew how hopeless Edward was at basketball. But then again,he felt the same
way about math.
"Let's give it a shot,"Leon said.
The boys agreed that over the next two weeks, they would do math for an hour each
day after school and then play basketball for another hour.

Lightning usually destroys (the trees it hits. But scientists have found an
amazing tree.It not only lives through lightning strikes (but actually grows better
because of them!
For years, scientists thought lightning was only bad for trees. But as they explored
places like the Amazon rainforest, they started to think there could be trees that fight
against lightning. It wasn't until about 100 years ago that such "super trees"were
discovered. Now,they know of a tree that uses lightning's power to kill nearby trees and
get more sunlight and nutrients for itself.
In 2015,scientist Evan Gora saw a Dipteryx oleifera tree, which had been struck by
strong lightning. It wasn't badly harmed while the neighboring trees were killed.
Scientists thought this tree could handle lightning, but there was no way to be sure.
Gora and his team saw more of these trees that grew well after lightning strikes. So,
they did a study. They followed 93 trees struck by lightning for 2-6 years. They found
that all 9 Dipteryx oleifera trees in the study survived with little harm. But 84 other trees
were badly hurt, and 64%of them died within two years.
These trees are very tall and have wide tops, making them 68%more likely to be

Is Technology Changing the Way Kids Develop Relationships?
Technology is changing what"friendship"means. For example, with technology,
people who have never met and will never meet can call each other friends. It makes the
line between connections and real friends become unclear.
Technology is everywhere in most children's life.It is changing how kids know and
build friendships. However,we do not always think carefully about its influence. As
technology affects kids more and more, children need to know where they learn about
fiiendship. They also need to think whether these ideas are healthy and can help them
build good relationships in the future.
We need to see these changes clearly, because friendships are very important for
kids'growth and life.Friendships bring kids values,love,safety and help.The early
friendships of children set an example for their later relationships.Later relationships
with classmates, teachers and other important people shape kids'ideas about the world
and their future. In fact, there is no aspect()of children's lives that remains untouched
by relationships.
At the same time, many of the changes in relationships caused by technology have
been positive.Technology has also been a good thing to keep already-established (
relationships. If you have family or friends who live at a great distance, they no longer
have to depend on the telephone or snail mail to stay connected. They can contact through

email,texting and so on.
Like many new inventions, technology has both advantages and disadvantages. It
can be used well, but it can also be used in wrong ways.I wory about how kids
understand friendship and how technology changes their ideas. For example,I hear many
young people talking about all of the "friends"they have made on the web.The Internet
helps people connect more easily than before. But just talking online does not mean you
have a real friendship
43.The line between connections and real friends has become unclear because
A.technology brings new change
B.it's difficult to find real friends
C.it's wise to connect with strangers
D.technology gives kids more free time
44.What do you know about children's relationships from the passage?
A.Relationships are easy to develop for children.
B.Children can understand relationships correctly.
C.Relationships connect with every part of children's lives.
D.Children's later relationships are more important than their early ones
45.The writer probably agrees that
A.children can't make friends on the web
B.technology is changing children's lives
C.technology can't cause positive influence
D.children dislike the growing influence of technology
46.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To list the changes in relationships caused by technology.
B.To introduce a new type of relationships in kids'daily life.
C.To tell the kids to develop their relationships with the help of the technology.
D.To remind the kids of thinking about the influence of technology on their
relationships.
