During the holiday, I went with my parents to visit my grandparents in the countryside. When Grandma said she had been busy with farm work, I decided right away to stay overnight at her house. The thought of planting vegetables and watering the fields made me really excited. That night, I could hardly fall asleep.
“Sweetie, time to get up.” Grandma’s soft voice woke me up. I looked at the clock—it was only 5:30 in the morning!
I asked, “Grandma, why do we have to get up so early?”
“Because the hens just laid their eggs, Mary. Now is the best time to collect them,” she explained.
The morning air was cool and fresh. But as we walked towards the chicken house, a strong, unpleasant smell came out. I held my breath and followed Grandma. She opened a small window and reminded me, “You have to be quick but gentle. Don’t scare the hens.”
I saw a hen guarding two large eggs on the straw (稻草). Her sharp mouth looked a bit scary. I took a deep breath and slowly reached out my hand. Suddenly, the hen stood up! I let out a small cry but quickly picked up the eggs before she could hurt me. The eggs felt warm in my hands—so different from the cold ones we usually take out of the fridge.
Later, we watered and fertilized (施肥) the vegetables in the fields, picked two pumpkins, and collected a big basket of tomatoes. By the time Grandma called, “Mary, dinner is ready!”, I was already sound asleep on the sofa.
When I finally sat down to enjoy the simple meal, I realized for the first time that every dish was the fruit of hard work. I had not only helped on the farm but learned to respect the hard work behind our food.

People always say that the music from their younger years is the best, compared with the music from any other time in their lives. This may be because of something that can be called the “memory bump (隆起)”
According to the BBC, the memory bump means that our memories from ages 10 to 30 are very strong. This period heavily shapes our interests, such as our favourite books, films, sports stars, and especially music. The reason is that there is a “safe” place in our brain to store the musical memories. The place is well protected from aging problems. As a result, the music we listen to during these years usually has a long-lasting influence. We usually remember the music in our early years more deeply than music from other times in our lives.
“Music is episodic (片段式的),” Professor Robert Cutietta said. “If you look at an artwork or something else, you can look at it and then walk away. Music is over time.”
Music is mixed. It can mix happy and sad feelings when we listen to it. When the songs are about your past experiences, memories of those moments will flood back as you listen to the songs again.
Music is magic. Sometimes, with a change in your experience, the sadness you felt before when listening to a song can later turn into joy. This can explain why listening to music from a difficult time in your younger life can bring a sense of comfort and relief (宽慰) now.
9. What is the “memory bump”?
A. An interest in books and films. B. The strong memories from our early years.
C. The happiest memories in the brain. D. A type of music from the 1910s.
10. Why do we remember the music from our younger years better?
A. We listen to the music more often.
B. Young people have better memories.
C. A well protected area in the brain stores it.
D. The music is easier to understand and remember.
11. What does the underlined word “flood” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Talk. B. Save. C. Cost. D. Rush.
12. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Most people always have clear musical memories.
B. Getting older changes how we remember music.
C. Our music memories have a lasting influence.
D. We can remember music better than other things.

Every September, China holds National Defense (国防) Education Month. This year, the theme is “Carrying Forward the Spirit of the Long March (长征), Building a Strong National Defense Together.” But what does a historic journey from 90 years ago have to do with today’s young people? The answer, educators say, is everything.
The Long March was a 12,500-kilometer journey made by the Red Army through mountains, rivers, and frozen lands.
