A couple Peter and Chris in their 60s have travelled 12,000 miles across 16 countries from Britain to China — riding their bikes the entire way. They stepped on the long journey after deciding to “do something a bit different”. They traversed (横穿) cities, deserts, mountains and everything in between across Europe, the Middle East and the East Asia. The married couple of 37 years enjoyed themselves with delicious local food and spent most nights inside a tiny tent put up wherever they could find a shelter.
Peter, 66, said the moment they finally had a look at the famous Great Wall after a year and a half of cycling 30 miles a day was “really exciting”. At the journey, the special pair didn’t fly home but instead chose to book a cabin (舱) inside a 400-meter-long container ship. The final part was a three-week voyage from Singapore across the Indian Ocean and into the Mediterranean Sea before arriving at Southampton.
“You never know what the day is going to bring. All you know is that you are going to get on your bike and cycle. Every day is an adventure and every day is new. Overall, the experience is absolutely unbelievable,” Peter said. In the beginning Peter and Chris set out to cycle from Britain in January 2017 but were forced home. They had cycled all the way to Hungary when Peter slipped on tiles (瓷砖) and broke his leg. After seven months of recovery, the couple set out again in Britain. They finally arrived in China in November 2018.
Both Peter and Chris agreed that the best part of the entire trip was coming across the kindness of strangers along the way, many of whom invited the couple for food and drink. Chris, 64, said, “It was a wonderful experience, especially wonderful because of the amazing people we met along the way.”
4. What’s the couple’s purpose of taking the long journey?
A. To break the world record. B. To try something new.
C. To go across 16 countries by bike. D. To celebrate their 37-year marriage.
5. How did the couple go back to their home after the trip to China?

Memory is part of what makes us human. For those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia (痴呆症), memory loss can deeply affect their daily life and a sense of identity. According to Innovation s Magazine, a new achievement in AI-powered smart glasses technology could be transformative (有改革能力) — helping people with dementia live independently for longer and stay more connected to the people and moments that matter most.
The smart glasses, created by a company called CrossSense, feature an AI companion called Wispy. Wispy guides its wearer through the day — helping them with daily tasks, such as making a cup of tea or hosting guests. Developed with input from people living with dementia, the technology can identify objects and help individuals with their routines.
Szczepan Orlins, the CEO of CrossSense, told Innovations Magazine, “The technology is designed to support daily living, integrating multiple senses to simplify essential tasks. We’re grateful to the people living with dementia and their families who helped shape it.”
To evaluate how well the glasses worked, they were tested on 23 people living with dementia and their carers. Without the glasses, those with dementia could name only 46 percent of household items correctly. With the glasses, they could name 82 percent. Not only that, but the improvement was maintained even after the wearers removed their glasses.
These results have aided CrossSense in achieving a major milestone. It won the Longitude Prize on Dementia. The £1 million awarded will help the company bring the glasses to market. Currently, a smartphone version of the AI companion is expected later in 2026, while the glasses could become available in early 2027.
It is estimated that nearly 150 million people around the world will be living with dementia by 2050. This makes it all the more important to create solutions that will allow people living with dementia to maintain independence and live full lives for as long as possible.
8. What does Szczepan Orlins say about people living with dementia?
A. They rely on others to enjoy daily routines. B. They contribute to developing the technology.
C. They have incredible talent in multiple senses. D. They can simplify essential tasks independently.
9. What is the current condition of the glasses?
A. They haven’t gone through tests. B. They prove particularly profitable.
C. They have yet to reach the market. D. They only bring short-term benefits.
10. What is the main function of the last paragraph?
A. To call for more solutions to memory loss. B. To tell challenges facing people with dementia.

A remarkable study of tropical insects found that many species may struggle to survive rising global temperatures. Scientists warn that heat stress could threaten vast numbers of insects in regions like the Amazon, possibly affecting entire ecosystems.
Scientists examined the heat tolerance limits of more than 2,000 insect species. Data was collected in 2024 and 2025 across different elevations (海拔) in East Africa and South America, including cool mountain forests, tropical rainforests, and lowland savannas. The researchers also analyzed the genome (基因组) of many species to investigate protein stability and better understand why some insects can stand heat more effectively than others.
The new research found that insects do not automatically adjust to hotter environments as temperatures rise. “While species at higher elevations can increase their heat tolerance, many lowland species largely lack this ability, at least in the short term,” study author Dr Kim Holzmann explains.
“Rising temperatures could have a massive impact on insect populations, especially in regions with the world’s highest biodiversity,” says Dr Marcell Peters, an animal ecologist at the University of Bremen and co-author of the study. “Since insects perform central functions in ecosystems as pollinators, decomposers, and predators, there is a threat of far-reaching consequences for entire ecosystems.”
The scientists also found major differences in heat tolerance among insect groups. According to the team, these differences are connected to the structure and heat stability of proteins.
“These properties are relatively conserved in the evolutionary (进化) family tree of insects and can only be changed to a limited extent,” Peters says. “The results suggest that fundamental characteristics of heat tolerance are deeply rooted in biology and cannot be quickly adapted to new climatic conditions.”
Researchers say the prospect for the Amazon is especially dire. “If global ecosystems continue to warm, expected future temperatures will lead to critical heat stress for up to half of the insect species there,” Holzmann says.
12. What does paragraph 2 focus on?
A. Where the field trip took place. B. How the study was carried out.
C. Why the research was started. D. What scientists have discovered.
13. What did the research find about many lowland species?
A. They are relatively insensitive to climate change.
B. They have a preference for hotter environments.
C. They can’t adapt to rising temperatures quickly.
D. They are capable of increasing their heat tolerance.
14. Why does Peters mention the family tree?
A. To clarify a definition. B. To make comparisons.
C. To offer an explanation. D. To raise further concerns.
15. What does the underlined word “dire” in the last paragraph most probably mean?
A. Disturbing. B. Familiar. C. Harmonious. D. Complicated.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. A
【解析】
【导语】本文主要介绍了一项关于热带昆虫耐热性的研究,发现许多昆虫物种可能难以适应全球气温上升。
【12题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Scientists examined the heat tolerance limits of more than 2,000 insect species. Data was collected in 2024 and 2025 across different elevations (海拔) in East Africa and South America, including cool mountain forests, tropical rainforests, and lowland savannas. (科学家检查了2000多种昆虫的耐热极限。数据于2024年和2025年在东非和南美的不同海拔地区收集,包括凉爽的山地森林、热带雨林和低地草原。)”可知,第二段主要介绍了这项研究是如何进行的。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“‘While species at higher elevations can increase their heat tolerance, many lowland species largely lack this ability, at least in the short term,’ study author Dr Kim Holzmann explains. (研究作者Kim Holzmann博士解释道:‘虽然高海拔物种可以提高它们的耐热性,但许多低地物种在很大程度上缺乏这种能力,至少在短期内是这样。’)”可知,研究发现许多低地物种无法快速适应温度上升。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“‘These properties are relatively conserved in the evolutionary (进化) family tree of insects and can only be changed to a limited extent,’ Peters says. ‘The results suggest that fundamental characteristics of heat tolerance are deeply rooted in biology and cannot be quickly adapted to new climatic conditions.’ (Peters表示:‘这些特性在昆虫的进化家族树中相对保守,只能在有限的程度上改变。研究结果表明,耐热性的基本特征深深植根于生物学中,不能快速适应新的气候条件。’)”可知,Peters提到家族树是为了解释为什么昆虫的耐热性难以快速改变。
【15题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“‘If global ecosystems continue to warm, expected future temperatures will lead to critical heat stress for up to half of the insect species there,’ Holzmann says. (Holzmann说:‘如果全球生态系统继续变暖,预期的未来温度将导致那里多达一半的昆虫物种面临严重的热应激。’)”可知,亚马逊地区昆虫的前景尤其令人担忧,因此“dire”意为“令人不安的,可怕的”。

Different from fear, joy, or anger, cheerfulness isn’t something that overcomes you. ____16____As such, you can include it into your life once you make the right mental switch. Here are four ways to do so.
⚫Acknowledge the difficulties.
Cheerfulness is an honest emotion because you’re not hiding from reality. ____17____ Instead, it’s extremely important to be honest with yourself about the problems you’re facing. Only by first acknowledging that things are tough will you be able to find ways to cope.
⚫Don’t focus on the negative.
Whether in your personal life or in society, it’s easy to focus on what’s going wrong. But whatever you focus on, it grows. If you decide to focus on what’s going wrong, those problems will grow in your mind until they consume you. ____18____
⚫Be grateful for what you have.
____19____ Usually, they’re the things we take for granted until they’re no longer there, such as good health, a loving family, or even something as simple as a beautiful sunrise. Being grateful will shift your perspective and make it easier to see the silver linings of your problems.
⚫____20____
No cheerfulness without laughter. So you can watch comedies, browse memes, or joke around with friends. Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts your mood, makes you feel less pain, and protects you from stress. Laughter is cathartic (精神宣泄的) and infectious. Laugh and brighten the room.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,割据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Surprise!” was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. There were colorful balloons all over the house, a big poster saying "HAPPY BIRTHDAY'', and of course a cake with 12 candles. It was a wonderful feeling. I knew that I had finally turned twelve and I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box which seemed to be a birthday present. When I opened the box, I couldn't believe my eyes. I had really gotten a mobile phone! Throwing myself into their arms, I let out a cry of joy, “Thank you! I love you guys!”
“You're welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy but we didn't only get you this because you turned twelve, but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades."
“Of course I will." I said confidently.
As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts on the first day.
It felt like I didn't even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn't pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. However, I didn't get caught using it.
I am pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mom had to sign the test.
It was hard to show my mom the test. She was used to seeing A's and B's on my tests. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn't believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed.
注意:
1.续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2,续写部分分为两段,每段的开头已给出。
Paragraph 1:
Realizing the reason for my failure, my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Then I started to wonder if I was wrong.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Realizing the reason for my failure, my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone. They said they had noticed that I never paid attention to them. It was like I had my own little world. So they thought we didn't communicate as much with my phone. They regretted having given me a phone, which made me ignore the family and study.
Then I started to wonder if I was wrong. A week later I tried going a whole day without a phone and it didn’t go that badly. I had so much fun because I was actually spending time with my family and paying attention to them. From that day, I had a different opinion towards phones. Phones really take you away from the rest of the world. I' m not saying that phones are bad and not to use them, but you do have to spare some time to spend with your family and not get stuck with your phone all day.

C. To show the benefits brought to potential users. D. To highlight the significance of the achievement.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Technological Achievement Shapes Health Care
B. Memory Loss Can Be Delayed by High Technology
C. An AI Companion Saves People Living with Dementia
D. AI-Powered Smart Glasses May Transform Dementia Care
