AI isn’t just for robots or games. Scientists are using it to find a very special bird — the Plains-wanderer (领鹑)!
Long ago, there were a lot of these birds in the grasslands in the east of Australia. However, as people turned grasslands into farms and cities, many of the birds lost their homes. Now, there are only between 250 and 1,000 of them left in the wild. They are in great danger.
It’s hard to find these birds in the wild. They are small, only about 15 cm tall. They’re not good at flying, so they usually stay on the ground. When they are scared, they just hide or run away. The females are larger than males and they keep their home areas safe. Also, females make a strange “Ooom” call.
To find these birds, scientists put special recording machines called “song meters” in the grasslands. These machines collected thousands of hours of sounds. Then AI listened to all the sounds and found the special “Ooom” calls among them. In this way, scientists succeeded in finding the birds in two places.
This is really good news! With the help of AI, scientists will be able to help protect the birds and their homes soon.
