Unit 7 Feel the Rhythm Section B (2a-2c) 教学设计-2026-2027学年人教版英语九年级上册
Unit 7 Feel the Rhythm
Section B 2a-2c (Vocabulary in Use)
I. Teaching Objectives
• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to classify and expand music-related vocabulary into four categories — kind of music, musical instrument, word to describe music, and musician — and build a personal word bank with at least 20 new words.
• Students will be able to understand and correctly use five key phrases in given contexts: dance to, sing along to, look down on, young and old, and hats off, adjusting verb forms where necessary.
• Students will be able to read and comprehend the story of Boya and Zhong Ziqi (the zhiyin story), complete the fill-in-the-blank exercise using seven target words (valuable, friendship, instrument, soul, commented, performed, gifted), and retell the story orally in 4-5 sentences.
• Students will develop an awareness of the Chinese cultural concept of zhiyin (知音) and appreciate how music connects people across time and cultures.
• Students will be able to express personal music preferences using sentence frames such as "I like music that...", "I prefer musicians who...", and "The use of ... is ..."
II. Key and Difficult Points
Key Points:
• Mastering the four-category vocabulary framework for music and adding new words to each category through brainstorming and pair work.
• Understanding and applying the five target phrases (dance to, sing along to, look down on, young and old, hats off) in sentence contexts with correct verb forms.
• Reading the Boya-Zhong Ziqi story for gist and detail, and correctly filling in the seven target words in the passage.
Difficult Points:

• Using the phrases dance to, sing along to, look down on, young and old, and hats off with correct verb forms and appropriate collocations in new, personalized contexts.
• Understanding the cultural connotation of zhiyin (知音) and explaining why Boya broke his guqin after Ziqi's death.
• Retelling the Boya-Zhong Ziqi story orally using target vocabulary and linking words (one day, then, after that, but, so).
III. Teaching Tools
• Multimedia courseware (PPT) with music clips and vocabulary images
• Student textbooks (PEP New Edition, Grade 9, Unit 7)
• Blackboard and colored markers
• Vocabulary card worksheets (printed for group work)
• Short audio clip of guqin music — "High Mountains and Flowing Water"
• Timer for classroom activities
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in (5 minutes)
• Teacher plays a 30-second audio clip of guqin music (High Mountains and Flowing Water) and asks: "What kind of music is this? How does it make you feel?"
• Students share their impressions in simple English (e.g., It sounds peaceful / old / quiet).
• Teacher writes the unit topic "Feel the Rhythm" on the blackboard and asks: "What words do you know about music?" Students brainstorm freely. Teacher records words on the board under four headings: Kind of music / Musical instrument / Word to describe music / Musician.
• Teacher introduces today's task: "Today we will build our word bank for music, learn some useful phrases, and read a beautiful Chinese story about friendship and music."
Step 2 Vocabulary Building — Activity 2a (10 minutes)

• Teacher displays the 2a table on PPT with four columns: Kind of music, Musical instrument, Word to describe music, Musician. The first row shows examples: folk, piano, energetic, pianist.
• Students work in pairs to brainstorm and fill in as many words as possible in each column. Teacher walks around to give help. Expected words include: rock, pop, jazz, country music, classical, folk / guitar, violin, erhu, pipa, drums, flute, keyboard / relaxing, exciting, moving, beautiful, loud, sweet / singer, songwriter, band, composer, performer.
• After 4 minutes, teacher invites 3-4 groups to share their word banks. Teacher writes new words on the blackboard under each category and checks pronunciation.
• Teacher extends the vocabulary by introducing a few more words from the story: soul, gifted, valuable. Students add them to the correct columns.
• Quick check: Teacher says a word and students shout out which column it belongs to. This takes about 2 minutes.
Step 3 Phrase Practice — Activity 2b (12 minutes)
• Teacher writes five phrases on the board: dance to, sing along to, look down on, young and old, hats off. Teacher explains each phrase with a simple Chinese translation and a quick example sentence.
• Students read the five sentences in 2b individually and try to fill in the blanks using the phrases from the box. They must change verb forms if necessary (e.g., dance -> dances, sing -> sings).
• After 3 minutes, students compare answers with their desk partner. Teacher then goes through each sentence on PPT and asks different students to read out their answers with the full sentence.
• Teacher highlights key points:
- "hats off to you" means "I admire you" — it is an expression of respect.
- "look down on" means "to think someone/something is not important" — it has a negative meaning.
- "young and old" means "people of all ages" — it is used after the noun it describes.
