I have a rule for travel: never carry a map. I prefer to ask for directions.
Foreign visitors are often puzzled in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks (地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travellers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop. ”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, usually there are not many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat (平坦的). In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile. ”
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map. They measure distance by means of time, not miles. “How far is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know. People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because visitors seldom understand the Greek language. Instead of giving you the direction, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.” Then he will lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.
Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to your question. What happens in this situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers, “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan think that “I don’t know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor may get lost in Yucatan! One thing will help you everywhere—in Japan, in the United States, in Greece, in Mexico, or in any other place. You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his body language. He or she will usually turn and then point in the correct direction. Go in that direction and you may find the post office!
4. The passage mainly tells people that ________.
A. never carry a map for travel
B. there are not many landmarks in the American Midwest
C. there are different ways to give directions in different parts of the world
D. New Yorkers often say, “I have no idea.” but people in Yucatan, Mexico, never say this
5. The passage says, “In Japan, people use landmarks in their directions.” The word “landmarks” means ________.
A. building names B. street names
C. hotels, banks and bus stops D. buildings or places which are easily recognized
6. In the passage, ________ countries are mentioned by the writer.
A. seven B. four C. eight D. five
7. Which of the following is wrong?
A. Travellers can learn about people’s customs (习俗) by asking questions about directions.
B. A person’s body language can help you understand directions.
C. People in some places give directions in miles, but people in other places give directions by means of time.
D. People in different places always give directions in the same way.

One day after school, I went to the teachers’ office to see my teacher, but nobody was there. As I was about to leave, I noticed a piece of paper on the floor. I picked it up and saw the words “FINAL-TERM EXAMINATION” at the top. I put the paper into my schoolbag secretly and ran out of the room.
After I came back home, I took out the paper quickly. It was the exam paper of my worst subject, history. I felt excited. My heart beat fast. I took out my history book and started working on the answer. I had never answered any questions so seriously.
On the day of the history exam, I went into the exam hall confidently. When the paper was sent to me, I dreamt of getting the highest mark in the whole grade and could not help smiling. “My history teacher always encouraged me to work hard and get better grades, but I let him down time and time again. This time I will give him a big surprise,” I thought.
When the teacher said we could start, I turned the paper over. To my surprise, all the questions were different. Later I felt nervous. In the end, I almost left the paper undone. After the exam, I ran to the toilet, took out the paper and carefully read it from the top. Oh! It was last year’s exam paper. I read all the questions but I hadn’t read the date.
This is a lesson in which I know I have to put my feet on the ground. I regretted doing such a silly thing. After that, I told my teacher the truth and I promised to be honest. From then on, I worked harder than ever before.

Storytelling has caught the human imagination for thousands of years. People everywhere have told stories to relax, to teach, to remember, and just to pass the time. People started telling stories long before writing was invented. ____16____. But people all over the world still tell one another stories out loud. A person who can tell a good story nearly always finds listeners.
Before people developed writing, storytelling was the most important way to pass along information. Anything a culture wanted to protect—its beliefs, its history, and its traditions—had to be told out loud. Each generation would tell the culture’s stories to the next. ____17____. Knowledge passed on in this method is called the spoken tradition. Even cultures that know how to write still pass along some information in this way.
____18____. In other cultures only special storytellers were trusted to do this important job. A culture’s best storytellers had good memories. They could also make the stories very interesting, so people would listen and remember them. Sometimes people would sing the stories or tell them in the form of poems. Songs and poems can both make stories easier to remember.
However, stories told aloud change over time as different people tell them. ____19____. Or a teller may simply not remember all the details of a story. Unlike written stories, the spoken tradition is not created by any one person. ____20____. Sometimes the stories are collected and written down long after they have been created.
A. In this way the stories were passed along
B. In some cultures everyone would pass along the stories
C. Soon storytelling became very popular all over the world
D. Instead, a whole culture helps shape the changing stories in history
E. The spoken tradition is created by good storytellers rather than listeners

VI. Reading Expression(本题5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
Very often, when we see young people sitting there, looking at the screen of a mobile phone and smiling, we may think nothing is wrong. But when we come to the question “How much time do they actually spend on media daily?”, the answer is surprising: Young people spend about nine hours every day using media, and this only includes media used for enjoyment.
Today’s young people seem to have become crazy multitaskers (可同时做多个任务的人). They often use media when doing other activities. Some watch TV when doing homework, others send texts while listening to music. But what do young people think of this? The research showed that two thirds of them believed watching TV or texting had no influence on their schoolwork. Half of them thought using social media (社交媒体) made no difference. However, researches have given a different answer: “Media multitaskers” did worse in tests.
Scientists did a study among more than 400 students. It shows that those who text a lot have more trouble sleeping and do worse in their study. In another research, students who didn’t text during a lesson took down a lot more notes than those who were texting. A similar research also found that students who texted when doing schoolwork had lower overall (总体的) grades.
According to a study, if a kid uses social media a lot, especially at night, he or she will sleep worse and feel more nervous and depressed (消沉的). On the one hand, young people stay up late to check messages and information. They may also be woken up by messages they receive.
