Many people think swans are very beautiful and romantic (浪漫的). They float (漂浮) on lakes like little boats, and the appear in songs, stories and even dances. But are swans really as sweet as we think?
People say swans are full of love because they stay with the same partner (伴侣) for life. But swans don’t do this for love. Instead, they stay together to have more babies and stay safe. Maybe they are not so romantic at all!
Swans also look very graceful (优雅的) when they float on the water. People often describe some girls as graceful swans. But swans can be scary too! They will make loud sounds and open their wings when they feel danger. So it’s best not to get too close!
There are some fun swan phrases in English. One is “swan song”. This means the last piece of work someone finishes before he stops working or dies. Long ago, people believed swans sang a beautiful song just before they died, and they thought it was the only sound they made all their lives. But that’s not true.
Swans may not be exactly what we think, but that’s what makes them so cool!

Do you want to know how to stay focused in class? The following suggestions will help you.

No matter how much you want to sit with your friends in class, try your best to avoid it. Talking with friends is not going to help you stay focused in class and will cause trouble too.

• Take part in class discussions.
It is a wonderful way to become a more focused student. When a teacher asks a question, you should offer to answer it. 35 This shows the teacher that you’re listening intently in class.
• Ask a question.
If you don’t understand something, never be afraid to ask. This really shows your teacher you want to be better, and that you can recognize (识别) the things you’re having difficulties with.

Barby Keel is 90 years old. She lives in Sussex, England and runs (经营) a special place called the Barby Keel Animal Sanctuary (保护区). For 54 years, she has helped many animals in need in the sanctuary.
It all started in the 1970s. A friend asked Barby to take care of his dog while he was away. Later, the dog stayed, and soon people brought her cats, too. Then came sheep, pigs and even cows! As more animals arrived, Barby started the sanctuary to give them a home. Now, her animal sanctuary is huge. Over 600 animals live there. It’s like a happy animal village!
Barby spent the first 20 years running the sanctuary by herself. Today she gets help from a team of kind volunteers. Although she has serious health problems, Barby still gets up at 7 a. m. every day to feed her cute animal friends. She never takes a day off. “Some days I feel very tired,” she says. “But when a little nose touches me or a sweet face looks up at me, I remember why I’m doing this.”
Her sanctuary now welcomes visitors every Sunday for free. People can meet the animals, visit the cafe and gift shop, and learn more about the animals.
(60) “I’m so thankful for my team and everyone who helps us,” Barby says. “I know I can’t do everything anymore, but I still get up early to feed the cats and check on them all. It’s a lovely life.”

Qian Xuesen is one of China’s greatest scientists. In 1935, he went to the US to study further. While he was there, he worked very hard and got two doctor’s degrees. He became really good at space science. In the 1950s, when he wanted to go back to China, the Ameri-can people stopped him. They knew he was important in the space field, so they didn’t want him to help China. At last, he came back in 1955. After returning, he did a lot for China’s space program. In 1956, he set up China’s first rocket research college. He once said, “As a Chinese scientist, my life purpose is to serve my people.” He was considered as the father of China’s space program for his great work.
