For years, it has been said that newspapers are at death’s door. Every year brings more news of newspaper closures (倒闭). But why is the situation so difficult for traditional newspapers?
Newspapers have a long history. The first printed newspaper appeared in the 1600s, and their most successful period was in the early 20th century.
However, with the arrival of radio and TV, newspaper circulation (流通) began to fall. By the mid-20th century, radio and TV had become so popular that people no longer had to depend only on newspapers for information. That was especially true for breaking news.
Afternoon newspapers were the first to suffer. After work, more and more people turned on the TV instead of opening a newspaper, as TV could easily provide the latest news. It was true that newspapers could not compete with TV in speed, but they could still provide in-depth reports that TV news lacked.
Newspapers suffered another heavy blow in the 1990s. With the rise of the Internet, tons of information became free. Many readers realized that they could read news online anytime, so there seemed to be little reason to pay for a newspaper subscription (订阅).
So what does the future hold? Will newspapers completely disappear? Maybe not. Many newspapers are making changes today. Some are going digital, while others are exploring new ways to serve readers. After all, people still need trustworthy news. Many agree that newspapers remain an important source of in-depth reporting, analysis (分析), and opinions. If they disappear completely, nothing will easily take their place.
21. The most successful period for newspapers was in the 1600s.
22. TV news could report the latest news faster than newspapers.
23. In the 1990s, the rise of the Internet made a lot of information free for readers.
24. Traditional newspapers have completely disappeared because people no longer read in-depth reports.
25. The passage mainly talks about the challenges traditional newspapers face and their possible future.

Many people are trying to learn a new language. Some consider it a hobby, while others have to learn one for their jobs or studies. As a foreigner who is truly interested in Chinese culture, I enjoy learning Chinese.
It is said that a person needs to know at least 3,000 Chinese characters (汉字) to understand most Chinese newspapers. For most foreigners, however, learning 3,000 characters sounds like an impossible task because many characters look so similar. That is why some learners give up halfway. It was the hardest part for me, too. But I managed to learn how to write them by watching short videos online. Whenever I saw a character I didn’t know on a street sign or a menu, I wrote it down on my phone and looked it up later. Step by step, I have learned the most common characters used in daily life.
Listening to Chinese as much as possible is also very important. I downloaded a lot of listening materials to my phone and listened to them on my way to school and work. I also watched many Chinese TV shows and films. The language in them is not too difficult, and the subtitles are always helpful for improving my listening skills.
As for speaking, I often practice by talking to myself in Chinese when walking around. For example, whenever I go to a shop, I try to think about how to express myself in Chinese first. This habit helps me think in a Chinese way, which makes a big difference.
Learning a new language is never easy. As for me, I just make good use of every tool around me and keep moving forward step by step. Even today, I am still enjoying learning new things every day!
31. Why do some foreigners give up learning Chinese characters?
A. The online videos are hard to find. B. Their phone dictionaries are broken.
C. The newspapers are very boring. D. The characters look too similar.
32. How did the author improve his or her listening?
A. By talking with shopkeepers. B. By writing characters on phones.
C. By watching movies with subtitles. D. By translating English stories.
33. What does the author do to practice speaking?
A. Reads street signs aloud. B. Walks around in Chinese shops.
C. Asks teachers for advice. D. Talks to himself or herself in Chinese.
34. What does the underlined word “subtitles” in Paragraph 3 probably mean in Chinese?
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The history of Chinese characters. B. Useful ways to learn Chinese.
C. Common difficulties in writing Chinese. D. Good places to study a language.

The Wenxiu rose is a special new kind of Chinese rose. It is named in honor of Huang Wenxiu, a devoted (尽职的) young woman who gave her life to helping poor villagers in the countryside. The flower carries people’s deep love, high respect, and lasting memories of her.
Huang Wenxiu was born into an ordinary family in Baise, Guangxi. After graduating with a master’s degree from Beijing Normal University, she had many chances to find high-paying jobs in big cities. However, she chose to return to her hometown and serve as a village official in Baini Village. To help the villagers get out of poverty, she visited every poor family, walked along muddy mountain roads, and helped them build new roads and sell local agricultural (农业的) products. Sadly, on her way back to the village during a heavy rainstorm in June 2019, she died in a sudden flash flood at the age of only 30.
To honor her great spirit, scientists at the Yunnan Academy of Forestry and Grassland spent years working hard to breed (培育) a new rose variety. In 2025, after succeeding in creating this new flower, they invited people across the country to give it a name. Among thousands of suggestions, “Wenxiu” was the most popular choice and soon became its official name.
The Wenxiu rose has soft, bright yellow petals (花瓣), looking warm and full of hope. It has a straight and strong stem (茎) with very few thorns (刺), which represents Huang Wenxiu’s honest and brave character. Furthermore, this plant is strong and adaptable, able to grow well in both warm and cool climates without needing special care.
Today, preparations are being made to plant the Wenxiu rose in Baini Village, where Huang Wenxiu dedicated (献身) her youth. People hope that this meaningful flower will take root across the land and bloom brightly year after year, keeping her selfless spirit alive in everyone’s heart.

23. T 24. F
25. T
根据文章第二段“The first printed newspaper appeared in the 1600s, and their most successful period was in the early 20th century.”
根据文章第四段“TV could easily provide the latest news. It was true that newspapers could not compete with TV in speed...”
根据文章第五段“Newspapers suffered another heavy blow in the 1990s. With the rise of the Internet, tons of information became free.”
Maybe not.”及“Many agree that newspapers remain an important source of in-depth reporting...”
