About 15 years ago, Andrew McLindon, a businessman and cyclist, was cycling in Austin, Texas. He thought of a friend’s 12-year-old son. The boy had hydrocephalus, which caused balance problems and he never knew the joy of biking.
When McLindon, now 60, got home, he searched online and found a three-wheel bike with a seat belt. It was great for a child with balance issues. Soon, the boy was cycling on the street with his friends, having fun and getting exercise. McLindon also noticed his friend’s reaction. “Seeing his son playing with other kids,” McLindon said. “I’ll always remember the smile on his face.”
That smile led to the McLindon Family Foundation. It gets money from donations. The group works with hospitals to find kids who can use an adaptive bike. They also make each bike fit the child’s special needs. A bike might have a headrest, a shoulder harness, a seat belt, and a steering and braking system for a caregiver at the back. These bikes cost 4,000 dollars, even with the big discount from the manufacturer. For the lucky kids who get one, it changes their lives.
“We helped a 14-year-old with spinal bifida (脊柱裂),” McLindon said. “She used to spend most days on the sofa watching TV. But after getting her bike, she started training for special-needs triathlons. In a magazine interview, she said, “I always knew I could be an athlete.”

Now, children who are recovering from a long-term illnesses in the hospital or at home may have a high-tech friend to help feel less lonely. And that friend is a robot called AV1. AV1 goes to school for a child who is homebound while recovering from a long-term illness. And the child’s school friends must help. They carry the robot between classes and place the robot on the child’s desk.
A Norwegian company called No Isolation created the robot. The co-founders of No Isolation are Karen Dolva and Marius Aabel. Dolva explains how the robot AV1 works. She says from home, the child uses a tablet or phone to start the robot. Then he uses the same device to control the robot’s movements. At school, the robot becomes the eyes, ears and voice of the child. “So, it sits at the child’s desk in the classroom and the child uses a tablet or a phone to start it, control its movement with touch, and talk through it.”
The student can partake in classroom activities from wherever he is recovering. The robot is equipped with speakers, microphones and cameras that make communicating easy. “It has speakers and microphones and cameras, and when the child speaks at home or in the hospital to his iPad it just comes out.”
This smooth interaction helps the child keep up with lessons, join group discussions freely and even share small joys with peers in class. It well narrows the distance between their recovery place and school, letting them stay closely linked to campus life instead of being left out alone.
The robot is designed to be tough. It is waterproof and can take a fall from a desk without damage. Inside AV1, there is a small computer connected to 5G network. A small camera connected to a small computer could do the job. But that would not be the same. AV1 is large and looks like a human for a reason. Dolva says this is important because the robot is supposed to be a friend to the children. Hopefully AV1 will help some children feel less lonely while they are absent from class.
46. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. All students can benefit a lot from the robot AV1.
B. Recovering from a long-term illness can be lonely.
C. Children benefit a lot from advanced technology.
D. A robot helps children recovering from illnesses feel less lonely.
47. What can we know about AV1 in Para. 2?
A. Its function.
B. Its prospect.
C. Its developing history.
D. Its production materials.
48. What do the underlined words “partake in” in Para. 3 probably mean?
A. Make up for. B. Replace.

Personal growth is often mistakenly regarded as a smooth upward path of achievements. Yet psychological research and real-life experiences confirm a different truth: resilience — the ability to adapt and develop amid difficulties — is the unseen force driving deep and lasting growth. In an era of rapid changes and unexpected challenges, developing resilience is not just a survival skill but a key part of self- development, turning setbacks into stepping stones.
The link between difficulties and growth lies in the positive psychological changes after tough life events. Studies show that those who deal with hardships rather than avoid them gain greater self- awareness, deeper understanding of others, and a stronger sense of purpose. For example, people who survive health problems with resilience often adjust their thinking, regaining confidence in their own abilities and valuing life more. This growth does not come automatically; it comes from facing difficulties on purpose, strengthening mental strength just as exercise builds muscle.
Resilience also plays an important role in life changes. Young people entering the workplace face setbacks such as rejected plans or disagreements that cause self-doubt, but resilient people see these as learning chances. They analyze their mistakes, ask for advice, and develop skills to make progress. Similarly, people traveling alone improve resilience by dealing with unfamiliar environments on their own, trusting their decisions and adapting to difficulties.
Some people argue that focusing on resilience puts pressure on people to ignore pain, but resilience means recognizing suffering without being controlled by it. It is a skill that can be developed, not an inborn quality. Simple methods such as changing negative thoughts, building support groups, and practicing thanksgiving can strengthen it over time.
In a society that values quick solutions, we must realize that true growth is built on resilience. Difficulties are an essential part of growth, not a detour. Developing resilience helps us face challenges bravely, adapt smoothly, and become stronger. It remains the most reliable companion on the path to meaningful personal growth.

A. Gaining a better understanding of oneself. B. Developing a stronger sense of purpose.

53. What can we infer from the passage about resilience?
A. It can be improved through certain methods. B. It is a skill that only a few people can have.
C. It has nothing to do with life changes. D. It makes people ignore their sufferings.
54. What does the author think of difficulties in personal growth?
A. They are unnecessary obstacles to avoid. B. They are key parts of true personal growth.

A. The ways to deal with life’s difficulties.

Melissa Gillespie, the mom of three, earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Southern New Hampshire University on Mother’s Day, 17 years after she started working on it.
Gillespie, 37, began to earn a bachelor’s degree when she was the mom of one baby and her husband, Quinton — serving in the Navy — was stationed (驻扎) in Washington. Three moves, two more children, one long separation and much deployment (部署) later, she never packed in pursuing her goal. Taking classes part-time while mothering a child who had only learnt to walk and later a baby was difficult, but she was committed to the effort. Then her husband moved to New York, and Gillespie and their two small children went with him. In New York, Gillespie had their third baby, and for four years, she wasn’t able to work on her degree at all. She focused on parenting her three children, two of whom were diagnosed with autism (自闭症).
Then the family moved back to Washington, where Gillespie started over. She had to re-take every class because the credits (学分) from the classes she had already completed had expired (过期), but she stuck with it.
When her husband received orders to move to Virginia, the couple had to make a hard decision. If she left again, Gillespie would not be able to complete her degree in nursing that she had worked so hard for already. So she chose to stay in Washington. For 19 months, Gillespie studied nursing and raised their three children.
When Gillespie passed the exam and earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing, her mom and children were able to attend the ceremony, but not Quinton. “It was so hard, and so hard on the kids. But I think that period of time showed them that it’s not easy to reach your goals, but if you push forward to do what you have to do, you can,” said Gillespie.
56. What does the underlined phrase “packed in” in Paragraph 2 mean? (no more than 2 words)

【56题详解】
考查词句猜测。根据第二段“Three moves, two more children, one long separation and much deployment (部署) later, she never packed in pursuing her goal. Taking classes part-time while mothering a child who had only learnt to walk and later a baby was difficult, but she was committed to the effort.

So far, the foundation has given out 450 bikes. And this is just the beginning. “I do many things. I manage a lot of companies,” McLindon said. “But giving bikes to these kids is the most important thing I do.”

51. What is the common misunderstanding about personal growth according to the passage?
A. It requires great efforts to achieve. B. It is a smooth process full of achievements.
C. It has a close connection with difficulties. D. It can only be gained through work experience.
52. Which of the following is NOT a benefit of dealing with hardships actively?
A. Gaining a better understanding of oneself. B. Developing a stronger sense of purpose.
C. Avoiding all the pain in life. D. Learning to value life more.
C. They make people lose confidence easily. D. They can only be solved with quick solutions.
55. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The ways to deal with life’s difficulties.
B. The importance of quick solutions in modern society.
C. Resilience is the key driver of personal growth.
D. Different opinions on the role of resilience.
