In 1999, Ronald Sakolsky, known as Saikaosi, was an American teacher working in Luoyang. He watched Yin Yuzhen’s story of fighting desertification in the Mu Us(毛乌素) Sandy Land on TV. Deeply touched, he spent two months writing emails and asking for help from many friends and groups. Finally, he raised 5,000 US dollars and sent the money to Yin Yuzhen to buy young tree seedlings.
For the following 27 years, Yin Yuzhen kept working hard in the harsh Mu Us Sandy Land in Inner Mongolia. She dug holes, planted trees and watered them, fighting against strong sandstorms year after year. With that money, she planted over 50,000 trees, covering over 500 mu of sandy land. Little by little, the dry desert turned into thick green woods. On August 23rd, 2026, Yin Yuzhen and Saikaosi met again in Inner Mongolia after more than 26 years apart. They hugged each other with tears.
