Last winter holiday, I went to stay with my grandmother in a hutong in the south of Beijing. Most of her neighbours were old people, and I was afraid the days would be long and boring. On my first morning, however, I noticed a small wooden box beside her gate. A note on it said, "Take a book, leave a book."
My grandmother told me the story of the box. Three years earlier, a primary school teacher had moved into the yard. Her room was too small for all her books, so she put a few outside her door. Within a week, the box was full of books from other families. People began to stop, look for something interesting, and come back with one of their own.
A year later, the neighbours cleaned an unused room of about seven square metres at the end of the hutong and turned it into a reading room. There was no librarian and no rules on the wall. Someone repaired torn pages with tape; someone else brought in an old lamp; a retired carpenter made two low wooden benches. Books came and went, and nobody wrote down who had taken what.
I spent every afternoon there. I read a science-fiction novel in four days. An old man who had once taught history saw me choosing books and began to recommend stories about old Beijing — the city walls, the bell towers, the families who had lived in these hutongs for generations. He spoke slowly, but his eyes shone.
One afternoon a boy of six ran in and asked for a picture book about dinosaurs. Two minutes later he was sitting on the floor, completely quiet. I suddenly understood why the little room mattered. In a city where everyone is busy and most doors stay closed, it gave people a reason to meet.

In 2021, 26-year-old Zhou Ming left his job in a big city and went back to his hometown, a small village in Chongqing. The village was famous for its sweet oranges, but few people outside the county had ever tasted them. "We worked hard to send you out of the village," his mother said. "Why do you want to come back?"
Zhou had a plan. In the city he had watched short videos of farmers selling fruit online. He borrowed a phone stand, carried a small table up the hill and began livestreaming among the orange trees. In the first week, fewer than ten people watched him. He kept talking anyway — about the soil, the rain, and the way his grandfather had planted the oldest trees.
Then one evening his seventy-year-old grandmother came into the video. She picked an orange, tasted it and laughed. The video was watched more than a million times, and orders poured in. For the first time, the village post office had to hire two extra workers.
Zhou did not stop there. He set up a team of eight villagers: three picked fruit, two packed boxes, and three learned to speak in front of a camera. He taught them to answer questions honestly — "If the oranges are small this year, say so" — because he believed that trust was worth more than a single order.
Last year the team sold 300 tons of oranges, and the average income in the village rose by 40 percent. Zhou still gets up at five to walk through the trees. "What I brought back was not money," he says. "It was a way of thinking."

On a spring morning in 2023, a white drone rose above a rice field in Jiangsu and began to spray. It flew in straight lines, turned at the edge and came back, again and again. In eight minutes it covered six mu of land — work that used to take a farmer half a day.
The drone belonged to a local cooperative. Its tank holds ten litres, enough for one mu at a time, and a GPS system keeps it within a few centimetres of the planned path. Its pilot, Liu Yang, had worked in a robotics company in Shenzhen before returning home. He was surprised to find that many farmers in their fifties were eager to learn. "They had seen young people leave," he said. "They knew they needed help."
The numbers explain the interest. Renting a drone costs about eight yuan per mu, while hiring workers costs more than thirty. The machine also uses thirty percent less pesticide and ninety percent less water, because the spray goes exactly where it is needed. In two seasons, Liu says, a drone pays for itself.
The machines are now used for more than spraying. In 2024, after heavy rain, drones carried medicine to a village cut off by water. They have also photographed old bridges and helped map new roads.
There are still problems. Batteries last only about fifteen minutes, and training a careful pilot takes weeks. But for many villages the drone has already become an ordinary tool, as common as a water pump. As one farmer put it, "It doesn't get tired, and it doesn't complain."
9. How long did the drone take to cover six mu of land?
A. About half a day. B. About two seasons.
C. About fifteen minutes. D. About eight minutes.
