The Race of the Robots
The robotics competition was taking place. Lily and Toby followed their two other teammates, David and Marcus, into the big hall. They laid out all their equipment on the table because the rules said the robot could not be assembled (组装) before the competition. They needed to build and program a robot that could make its way around an obstacle (障碍) course. It was said that judges often gave a surprise ___10___ change that would require the students to change their robotic design at the last minute.
“Teams, it is now time for the new rule,” the host announced. “Some rocks will be placed on the course. You will have to make your robot remove them from the course.”
“We can build an arm to pick up the rocks and ___11___ them on the side,” said David right away. “But that would take too much time,” Marcus replied.
The team stood in ___12___, each trying to think up new ideas. Toby thought hard about the design they had already planned out. Then he realized something special about their design — the secret box.
“How about we create a door in the front of the ___13___ space in the center of the robot? We can add a sensor (传感器) to the door. So when our robot goes along and comes across those rocks, it will open the door and pick them up,” he explained.
The team thought about it. “Actually, that might work. The fact that the robot is ___14___ these things rather than just moving them might give us extra points,” Lily said.
The four set to work, ___15___ but quickly assembling their pre-designed robot, then adding the door with the extra parts they had brought. It was hard, and time was running out. As the buzzer (计时器) rang, Toby placed the last part on the robot.
It was time for Toby’s team to compete. They set their robot on the course and watched it make its way and meet the first rock. It stopped for a second, and the members of the team ___16___ their breath. Then the machine opened its door and slid (滑行) across the small rock. When it passed over the rock, the rock disappeared — ___17___ in the robot’s secret box. The team cheered, knowing they were one step closer to the championship.

“Ugh, meatloaf again? I hate meatloaf! ” Matt shouted angrily. “I’m not eating this.”
His parents exchanged worried glances, knowing Matt’s outbursts had been happening at least once a week all summer long.
“Matt, how about you take charge of dinnertime? You can choose and cook the meals, as long as they’re healthy.” Mom suggested. Excited. Matt declared, “Good, we’re going to eat good food every night!”
The next day, Dad helped Matt create a meal plan. As Matt excitedly listed his favorite meals, Dad reminded him about including vegetables and sides.
“Oh, yeah. Um, we can have corn with the chicken.” Matt said.
“Sophia does not like corn.” said Dad.
“Well, it’s my choice, so I’m going to make com.” Matt replied.
“OK, but she might complain at dinner tonight. Are you ready for that?” Dad asked.
“Yeah, whatever. ” Matt answered.
Planning the meals proved more challenging than Matt expected, as he faced constant reminders of family preferences. Frustrated, he shouted, “This is impossible!”
“Yes, it is hard. Your mother and I try very hard to make everyone happy, but everyone has different tastes, and sometimes, we just can’t please everyone.”
“Fine, we’ll have to just go with this plan this week. Next week I’ll try to make everyone happy.” replied Matt.
When it was time for Matt to cook, his parents assisted him, as he was inexperienced. After an hour of hard work, he felt proud of his chicken, rice, and broccoli with cheese.
“Ew, this rice tastes funny.” Sophia said. Matt took a bite. It did taste a little funny. But he’d worked so hard! He felt like he might cry.
The next day, Matt didn’t want to cook dinner. “It’s hard.” He explained to Mom.
“It is hard, but your father and I do it anyway. How are we going to eat, otherwise?” said Mom.
Matt suggested eating out every night, but Mom noted the expense, “We spend $190 a week on groceries, about $27 per night, while dining out costs $75 per dinner. That would mean giving up your soccer and Sophia’s gymnastics, and maybe even moving to a smaller house. Do you think that’s worth it? ” She asked.
Realizing the sacrifice (牺牲) involved, Matt decided to cook. Again, he was tired and hungry when dinner was finally ready.
“I don’t like corn.” cried Sophia. Matt didn’t yell back; instead, he apologized, realizing how hard it was to cook and meet everyone’s tastes.
“I don’t want to take over dinner anymore, and I won’t complain Sorry.” Matt said.
“You’ve done a great job, and it’s a valuable learning experience.” Dad said.
Feeling relieved, Matt finished dinner happily.

C
Do you ever dream of doing nothing at all, lying on a grassland for a whole afternoon, just staring at the sky and listening to the silence? It may sound like a lovely idea, but in fact we can find doing nothing at all—and no sleep—very hard to do.
In a famous study a few years ago at the University of Virginia, participants (参与者) were led one at a time into a completely empty room with no distractions (分心之物). They had no phone, no books, no screens—and they weren’t allowed to take a nap (打吨). Electrodes were fitted to their ankles and they were left alone for 15 minutes. It was a chance to kick back and relax for a short while.
So, how did it go? Well, before being left alone, participants were shown how to press a computer key connected to a machine that gave an electric shock. You might think that having tried it once, no one would want to do it again. Wrong. In fact, 71% of the men and 25% of the women gave themselves at least one electric shock during their time alone—and one man shocked himself a shocking 190 times. It turns out that having nothing to do was so torturing (折磨人的) that many of the participants preferred to, in fact, torture themselves rather than put up with no distraction.
This experiment is an extreme (极端的) example, but we know from everyday life that people continuously choose to do things they don’t need to do and which are sometimes painful. Think of all of your friends who run 40 kilometers a time or set punishing rules at the gym. They go way beyond what is required for their health and fitness.
Michael Inzlicht from the University of Toronto calls this the paradox (悖论) of effort. Sometimes we take the easy way and do as little as we can get away with, but at other times we value situations more if we have to put in lots of effort. The joy of the effort gives us so much pleasure that we don’t take the short cut. We might spend hours on a difficult math problem instead of searching on an learning app to find out the solution.
During this difficult time, we can find that we are not born lazy. Indeed in a strange way we might find that doing less, and resting more, actually requires a lot more effort than one would think.
24. Why did the researchers do the experiment?
A. To show that being alone is easier for women.
B. To suggest that men cannot stand being left alone.
C. To prove that having nothing to do at all is painful.
D. To test whether electric shocks do harm to people.
25. Which of the following can be regarded as “the paradox of effort”?
A. Making a piece of furniture by hand.
B. Lying on the sofa and watching TV.
C. Warming up before running 40 kilometers.
D. Reaching the top of a mountain by using a lift.
26. What can we learn from this passage?
A. We should keep ourselves busy to get pleasure in life.
B. We find joy in situations requiring plenty of hard work.
C. It’s important to do things that are effortful and difficult.
D. It’s possible for us to get pleasure from taking a short cut.
【答案】24. C 25. A 26. B
【解析】
【导语】本文主要介绍了我们什么都不做是很难做到的。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据“but in fact we can find doing nothing at all—and no sleep—very hard to do.”以及“It turns out that having nothing to do was so torturing”可知做实验的目的是为了证明什么都不做也是痛苦的。故选C。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据“Sometimes we take the easy way and do as little as we can get away with, but at other times we value situations more if we have to put in lots of effort. The joy of the effort gives us so much pleasure that we don’t take the short cut”可知有时我们采取简单的方式,尽可能少地做我们能逃脱的事情,但在其他时候,如果我们必须付出很多努力,我们会更加重视情况,努力的乐趣给了我们如此多的快乐,以至于我们不走捷径,结合选项可知,选项A“手工制作家具”被称为“努力的悖论”。故选A。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据“The joy of the effort gives us so much pleasure that we don’t take the short cut”可知努力的乐趣给了我们如此多的快乐,以至于我们不走捷径,所以我们在需要大量努力的情况下找到快乐。故选B。
D
Txt msgs r ruining language
lol, jk!! :)
These are typical examples of “textspeak”. In casual discussions of language and the Internet, it’s common to hear concerns that “textspeak” is ruining language. Some argue that technology has made us lazy in our speaking and writing. However, has “textspeak” truly destroyed our language?
Indeed, language change is very common in history. Whether in ancient Rome or modern times, people often feel worried about how language changes, but they also slowly adapt to it. In AD 63, a Roman scholar was unhappy with new elements in Latin, calling it an “artificial language.” He didn’t realize that this language would later develop into early French.
Similarly, even though people have many concerns about language change, the natural development of language is unavoidable. U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt supported changes to American English spelling in the 1870s, many of which we still use today. These include changing“-re” endings to“-er” and“-our” to“-or”.
Fast forward to today, where rapid communication is enabled by a variety of tools and technologies. Among these, emoticons like “:-)” serve as visual representations of smiling and happiness. The very first emoticon, created by computer scientist Scott Fahlman in 1982, was used to suggest a joke in text communication. These symbols offer information about the tone of a statement, making digital communication more expressive.
For example, punctuation and repeated letters can express strong emotions. A text message like “JACK I AM SO SO SO SORRY I thought you were behind us in the taxi and then I saw you weren’t!!! I feel sooooooooo bad!” shows sincere apology through its style.
In digital communication, we often use a single symbol to send a fast but complete message. Linguist Susan Herring points out that sometimes a single question mark (?) is used to suggest that the user is confused or doesn’t know what to say. Similarly, a single exclamation point (!) as a message can express surprise and excitement. You can repeat these symbols to show a higher degree of surprise. Here is an example: A: So I have some good news. B:? A: I got a raise today. B:! A: And it came with a promotion. B:!!!
Furthermore, studies have shown that people often switch between formal and informal language depending on the context. Texting might be informal, but people can still switch to more formal language when necessary, such as in academic or professional settings. This flexibility proves that users are not losing their ability to use language properly. They’re simply adapting it to different contexts.
Far from destroying language, these changes actually show how we can express complex feelings quickly and directly, fitting our fast-paced world. Language has always evolved, and the Internet is just the latest step in this journey. What’s important is how well these changes meet our needs.
27. According to the passage, what do emoticons do?
A. They help express tone in online chats. B. They disconnect from language changes.
C. They completely ruin language and skills. D. They simplify English spelling over time.
28. Why does the writer use the example of the apologetic text message?
A. To show the effectiveness of digital communication.
B. To recommend using “textspeak” in communication.
C. To stress the importance of punctuation in written texts.
D. To exhibit the expression of emotions through “textspeak”.
29. The underlined word “flexibility” most probably means ________.
A. the courage to learn new foreign languages
B. the difficulty in understanding new words
C. the ability to change easily to fit different situations
D. the rule to use formal language all the time
30. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. Explain language changes across different historical periods.
B. Study textspeak’s positives and its communication influence.
C. Argue technology makes people lazier in speech and writing.
D. Criticize language evolution in the digital age and its effects.
【答案】27. A 28. D 29. C 30. B

五、阅读表达(共10分,31-33题每题2分,34题4分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
In today’s digital (数字的) age, video platforms like YouTube, iQIYI and bilibili all offer viewers the choices to watch content (内容) at different speeds, from the standard “normal” play up to “2X” or even faster.
Joel Jelen, a 55-year old, has been a fan of the fast-forward button for about 15 years, mainly for one type of content. “I often watch sports videos at double speed,” he shares. “I started doing this because I realized life is too short to sit through a football match from the beginning to the end.” What began as a work break habit has become a preferred way of relaxation for Jelen. “It’s very relaxing and a great break from my job. I get to catch all the key moments and action without spending hours upon hours.”
It’s true that packing more viewing into less time sounds effective. However, Zhang, a film reviewer, argues, “Many people make thoughtful choices about pacing, lighting, timing, and music to perfect their films. Speeding up can ruin (毁坏) the experience.” According to Zhang, if someone speeds up a movie while watching, their critique (评论) of the film cannot be valid (合理的).
Sometimes getting a quick overview and feeling a sense of achievement from consuming (消费) another piece of information seem to become more important. As a result, people speed up content to tick off “watched” or “listened to” from their to-do lists, instead of truly enjoying the movies and songs. However, people don’t realize that sped-up content sometimes destroy their patience with life. One Chinese Internet user said, “I found myself growing impatient with tasks like research for work or studying for exams, which can take hours, days, or even weeks. I’d think, ‘How can I speed this up?’ And that thought really scares me.”
We already live in a fast-paced society, yet we still try to speed it up in every aspect (方面). But at what cost? Some things should remain unhurried, such as our appreciation (欣赏) for beauty and the value of hard work.

A. Because his parents were often too busy.
B. Because Matt really loved cooking meals.
C. Because Matt often complained about dinner.
D. Because they wanted him to gain new skills.
22. What words can describe Matt’s emotional changes toward cooking throughout the story?
A. Excited → Proud → Tired → Understanding
B. Angry → Proud → Confused → Understanding
C. Excited → Curious → Confused → Disappointed
D. Angry → Curious → Tired → Disappointed
23. What lesson did Matt learn from his experience?
A. Eating out helps solve family problems. B. Putting yourself in others’ shoes is key.
C. Teamwork makes tasks more manageable. D. Preparing meals is easy with good planning.
31. According to the passage, what do video platforms offer viewers?

32. What kind of videos does Joel Jelen watch at double speed?
