Family traditions are passed down from generation to generation. They can be big festivals or simple weekly habits. We asked four families to share their most important tradition.
The Li family — A big family dinner (China).
Each January or February, the Lis clean their house to drive away bad luck. On Chinese New Year’s Eve, family members travel back home for a big family dinner. They make dumplings and watch the Spring Festival Gala (春晚) together. “There’s no place like home,” says Li Hua, 13.
The Tanaka family — Saying thank you (Japan).
Every September, the Tanakas hold a “Thank-You Dinner” for their grandparents. The grandchildren cook and everyone at the table names one thing they are grateful for. “My grandmother tells her childhood stories while we eat,” says Ken, 14. “Respect and thanks keep a family close.”
The Mensah family — Welcoming a new life (Ghana).
On the eighth day after a baby’s birth, the Mensahs hold an outdooring naming ceremony (仪式). Relatives and friends come together and offer their best wishes to the new parents and the new child. People often say to the new child, woaba a tena asee (Welcome, may you live long.). “Every child is welcome and loved,” says Ama, 12.
The Rossi family — Always together on Sunday (Italy).
Every Sunday, the Rossis enjoy a special long lunch at grandma’s house. It usually starts at 1 p.m. and finishes at 4 p.m. “We have simple meals every day, but we have a special meal for Sunday lunch,” says Marco, 15. “Food tastes better when nobody eats alone.”

For many people, climbing mountains or walking long distances can be tiring. But a new technology is making it easier: exoskeletons (外骨骼).
Exoskeletons were once used mainly by soldiers, workers and patients. They were very expensive — some costing hundreds of thousands of yuan. But with the development of motors (电机), AI systems and modern technology, they are now becoming affordable for ordinary people.
In China, exoskeletons now usually sell for between 6,000 and 20,000 yuan. A Beijing outdoor company launched one priced at about 7,000 yuan in June. One online store sold more than 100 sets in a single day. Rental services (租赁服务) are also making them easier to use. A park in Hangzhou provides exoskeleton experiences for 9.9 yuan an hour, while people can pay about 80 yuan to use them for three hours at the Great Wall and Mount Huangshan.
Unlike industrial (工业的) exoskeletons, which are designed for repeated tasks like lifting and carrying, outdoor exoskeletons need to follow human movement as people move. “Exoskeletons are most helpful in difficult mountain environments,” said Xie Gongjin, marketing manager at ULS Robotics.
For users, the benefits are clear. Ren He, 52, rented an exoskeleton to climb Changbai Mountain. “The whole trip felt surprisingly easy, and the next day I had no back pain or leg pain,” he said. Liu Yufeng, a running fan, tried one during a running event. “The device was especially useful when going upstairs, and when I went down I could feel the machine cushioning (缓冲) my steps,” he said.
26. What can we know about exoskeletons in the past?
A. They were made for everyday walking. B. They were sold in outdoor sports stores.
C. They were mainly used by certain people. D. They were cheap for most ordinary people.
27. How does the writer develop ideas in paragraph 3?
A. By listing numbers. B. By telling stories. C. By asking questions. D. By giving advice.
28. What is the main difference between outdoor exoskeletons and industrial ones?
A. They are designed for tough tasks.
B. They can follow human movement.
C. They can work without any AI systems.
D. They are popular among old sick people.
29. What do the experiences of Ren He and Liu Yufeng show?
A. Exoskeletons work well for users. B. Climbing mountains is dangerous.
C. Young people love running events. D. People should use exoskeletons more.
30. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Climb Mountains Safely B. Why People Love Running Events
C. The History of Industrial Exoskeletons D. Exoskeletons: Making Outdoor Trips Easier

Stop Being a People-Pleaser
Do you find it hard to say no when someone asks for help? Do you feel bad after you say no? Do you often agree even when you don’t? If your answer is yes, you may be a “people-pleaser”.
Being helpful is good. It can help you build warm friendships. However, if you always put others first but forget your own happiness, you will easily feel stressed and tired. Luckily, here are some useful steps to help you stop being a people-pleaser.
First of all, know what you can do and what you cannot do. When someone asks you for help, tell them you need time to think. Then ask yourself: Do I really want to do this? How much time will it take? After that, you can decide.
Some people please others because they are not confident. They do not care much about their own needs. If this sounds like you, try positive self-talk. Remind yourself that you also have dreams. You don’t need to give up your time and energy to things that you don’t enjoy.
Start with small steps. For example, you can begin to practice saying no in a message on your phone. Then say no face to face. Try it in different situations.
Stopping being a people-pleaser does not mean you have to stop being kind. You can still help others, but do it in your own way.

A. How to Climb Mountains Safely B. Why People Love Running Events

46. How will people feel if they always put others first?
__________________________________________________________________
47. What should people do first when someone asks for help?

【答案】例文
A great family idea
Every family has its small problems, but a great idea can make a big difference.
In my family, we used to argue about who should do the housework. To solve this, I came up with an idea to make a weekly housework plan. We wrote down everyone’s tasks clearly on it. With this plan, everyone knew what to do. After we finished housework, we had more time to relax together. Everyone was happy with the result.
I think this idea is really helpful. It not only solves the problem but also brings us closer. Now we live happily.
