hold up a sign
It was the first day of Grade 7, and I felt a little worried. I knew many of the kids in my grade and heard that the teacher was nice, but there would still be a lot of new things, such as new rules, new subjects, and some new things that I wouldn’t expect (预料). It was exciting, too, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t worried.
We waited outside, and the teachers held up signs with their names to help us find the right place to line up. I quickly noticed “Ms Smith” on a sign of my new teacher. As I got in line, I said hello to my friends from primary school. Ms Smith walked down the line, introducing herself to us.
She-held out her hand and said, “Hi, I’m Ms Smith. What’s your name?”
“Allison,” I answered, and shook her hand.
“It’s nice to meet you, Allison. How was your summer?”
“It was good, I went to the pool and swam a lot,” I said.
“That’s great, Allison. You must be good at swimming,” said Ms Smith. It was great to have a nice talk with my new teacher!
Later we walked into the classroom, and got seated. When everyone was ready, Ms Smith said, “Our class needs to work together on exciting projects this year. You’ll work with each other often, so I want to make sure we’re all on the same page. Please think to yourself about what you value (珍重) —what is important to you in your classroom, teachers, classmates, and yourself.”
We all sat quietly. Then Ms Smith gave us a partner, asked us to introduce ourselves and share our ideas. The ideas my partner and I thought of were respect (尊重), honesty, and kindness.
Then, Ms Smith asked us to share our ideas, and we voted (投票) on which three we would use as our classroom values. I liked how we worked together to choose the values that would guide our classroom. And I knew it was going to be a great year.

As young students, you have many dreams. These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel Prize (诺贝尔奖). They can also be small. You may just want to become one of the ten best students in your class.
Once (一旦) you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you try to make your dream real? “Follow Your Heart” by Australian writer Andrew Matthews tells us that making our dreams real is life’s biggest challenge. You may think you are not very good at some school subjects, or that it is impossible for you to become a writer. These kinds of ideas stop you from getting your dream, the book says.
In fact, everyone can make his dream come true (成真). The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is.
Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want every day and your dream will come true faster because a big dream comes from many small dreams.
You must also never give up your dream. There will be difficulties on the road to your dreams. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You need to decide what is the most important. Studying instead of (而不是) watching TV will help you to get better exam results (成绩), while saving five yuan instead of buying an ice cream means you can buy a new book.
As you get closer to your dream, it may change a little. This is favorable as you have the chance to learn something more useful and find new hobbies.
27. Which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A. You must never give up your dreams.
B. You must remember what your dream is.
C. You must be good at all your school subjects.
D. You must decide what is the most important for your dream.
28. The word “favorable” in the last paragraph means ________.
A. beneficial B. unforgettable C. negative D. sad
29. The best title (题目) for the passage is ________.
A. An Australian Writer’s Dream B. Many Young Students’ Dream
C. How to Be One of the Best Students D. How to Make Your Dream Real
D
Many people think it helps to “sleep on it” when facing a difficult problem. They choose to leave it until the next day to carefully think over what to do next. After all, a good night’s rest can relax our mind and make our thinking much clearer.
However, a new study from Neuroscience of Consciousness shows that dreaming plays an active role in solving (解决) problems, especially during REM sleep — when our eyes move really fast and we have most of our dreams.
In the study, scientists prepared some difficult puzzles (谜题) and matched each puzzle with a special piece of soft music. They invited 20 students to solve the puzzles while listening to the matching music. Each student needed to solve all the puzzles, and they had only three minutes for each one, so most of the puzzles stayed unsolved in the end.
After that, these students went to sleep in a quiet lab while scientists carefully recorded their brain activities with special equipment. Before falling asleep, all students were told that if they dreamed about any unsolved puzzle, they should keep thinking and working on it in their mind. When they were in REM sleep, scientists played the music for half of the unsolved puzzles, with no music played for the other half for comparison (对比).
The next morning, the 20 students shared their real dream experiences. About 75% of them reported that they dreamed about the unsolved puzzles. Among them, 60% said the puzzles with the matching music showed up more often in their dreams than the others without music.
All puzzles were more likely to be solved after one night’s sleep. But surprisingly, the ones that showed up in dreams were 42% more likely to be solved, while the others improved (提升) by only 17%.
This study shows that dreaming about a problem lets the brain reorganize (重构) information, and may develop insight. It gives us sudden new ideas and makes the problem easier to work out. So next time when you meet a difficult problem in study, do not just sleep on it. Think carefully before bed. Your brain may keep working during dreams, helping you find the answer.
30. Why were many puzzles not solved before the students went to sleep?
A. They had quite little time for each puzzle. B. They knew the puzzles would show up later.
C. The special puzzles were boring to work out. D. The matching music made them feel relaxed.
31. What can we learn about the study?
A. Students finished musical puzzles better during the day.
B. Over half of the students dreamed about the unsolved puzzles.
C. Music-free puzzles showed up in even more students’ dreams.
D. Scientists played music for most unsolved puzzles in REM sleep.
32. The word “insight” in Paragraph 7 probably means ________.
A. a good way to manage dreams B. a new skill to improve learning
C. a large collection of information D. a clear understanding of a problem
33. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To guide students to get enough sleep every day.
B. To share sleep habits for clear minds with students.
C. To introduce ways to have better dreams to students.
D. To encourage students to think deeply before sleeping.

【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第2段“You may think you are not very good at some school subjects... These kinds of ideas stop you from getting your dream”可推知,并不是必须擅长所有科目才能实现梦想,这种想法反而会阻碍你,因此C项表述错误,符合题意。
【28题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第6段“This is favorable as you have the chance to learn something more useful and find new hobbies.”可推知,梦想的改变让你有机会学习更有用的东西,这是一种有益的情况,因此favorable意为“有益的”,与beneficial含义相近。
【29题详解】
最佳标题题。根据文章第2段“Once you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you try to make your dream real?”以及全文围绕如何实现梦想展开论述,可推知文章主要讲述如何实现梦想,因此最佳标题为How to Make Your Dream Real。

【答案】30. A 31. B 32. D 33. D

原文第五段提到“About 75% of them reported that they dreamed about the unsolved puzzles.”,75%超过一半,说明了超过半数学生梦到了未解开的谜题。
【32题详解】
原文第七段提到“This study shows that dreaming about a problem lets the brain reorganize (重构) information, and may develop insight. It gives us sudden new ideas and makes the problem easier to work out.”,后文解释它能带来新思路、方便解开难题,说明了insight指对问题清晰的理解。
