They say everyone remembers their first Wimbledon. For me, it was 1982. It was my first Wimbledon as a line judge. Since then, I ____15____ at all but two of the tournaments. But starting next year, the tournament will replace us with ____16____ AI system. I was sad when I heard the news.
When I was younger, I played a lot of tennis. In junior tournaments, we judged each other’s matches. Then one day, at a Wimbledon tournament, I saw an advertisement from the Professional Tennis Umpires Federation (PTUF, 职业网球裁判联合会). The organization ____17____ new members. I gave it a go and got the spot after just 30 minutes of training in London. The PTUF had high standards. There were strict rules ____18____. We had to, for example, stand and walk in certain ways on the court.
The pay wasn’t great, but line judges didn’t do it for the money. Rather, we did it purely for the love of tennis. You’d start at local events and slowly work your way up ____19____ being graded by the chief umpire (裁判). Finally, you might be considered ____20____ for Wimbledon--every tennis lover’s dream. I worry that smaller tournaments will soon have difficulty finding line judges.
A human line judge brings something to the game ____21____ a computer just can’t. We certainly keep some traditions alive. I think we’ve made the courts feel ____22____. Spectators (现场观众) can learn a lot about the game by watching a discussion between a line judge and the umpire. All that will ____23____.
I’m not saying we’re perfect. We are human and we make mistakes. But we hold ourselves to a very high standard. Fairness is everything to us.
____24____ is sad to think that I won’t be working at Wimbledon again. I’ll always love tennis, but I don’t think I could bear to go to Wimbledon now as a spectator. It just wouldn’t feel the same.

look for“一般现在时”、looked for“一般过去时”、had looked for“过去完成时”,均不符合语境。
固定结构there be sth. for sb. to do,表示“有某物供某人去做”,for us to follow意为“供我们遵守”。

先行词是something(事物),定语从句用which引导。
固定句型It is +形容词+to do sth.,it作形式主语,真正主语是后面的不定式。This、That、He都不能充当形式主语。

Twenty years ago, when Andrew Westbrook was in college, he couldn’t stay focused in class. He certainly had the ability to focus—when he got lost in a good book, for example, thinking felt ____25____. But when it came to some other tasks, thinking felt like pulling teeth.
Westbrook managed to graduate in the end. Now he is a neuroscientist His research is shaking up old ideas about why we ____26____ with certain tasks.
For years, scientists thought that mentally tiring tasks like writing and solving math problems ____27____ more energy than easier ones like looking out the window. As a result, these harder tasks would make us run out of ____28____ -and lose focus-more quickly.
But the brain is a complex (复杂的) machine. It’s always doing heavy lifting. Even when you’re just ____29____ a room, your brain is dealing with lots of information (from your eyes) and using lots of energy. But we don’t think of such tasks as hard work, do we?
A. accept B. avoid C. limit D. worse E. care F. benefits
According to Westbrook’s studies, we often think certain tasks are harder than they really are. “When you are thinking about doing a difficult task, it often feels much ____30____ than when you are actually doing it,” Westbrook says. But this early “mental hurdle (障碍)” can lead us to put off the task or even ____31____ it altogether. “If we can get over this hurdle, thinking will become easier,” he adds.
Westbrook’s team has found ways to help us do just that. For one, he suggests focusing on the ____32____ of completing the task rather than the effort it takes. We can also try to get into a mental state called “flow (心流).” When people are in this state, they seem not to ____33____ how hard the task is. One key to entering “flow” is to reduce uncertainty. Before writing a book report, for example, you can set yourself a time ____34____. How much can you get done in 15 minutes?
Finally, it can help to make these mentally tiring tasks a habit. Try doing them at the same time and place every day or week. After a few weeks, focusing on these tasks won’t just feel easier-it will be easier.

Birds learned to fly about 150 million years ago. This was an important ____58____ in animal history, but scientists did not fully know how this change happened. A new study gives us some answers. Researchers found that birds could fly because of changes in the cerebellum (小脑), a part of the brain that ____59____ body movement.
Scientists from two US universities did this study. They used PET scans on modern pigeons and ____60____ the results with dinosaur fossils. Unlike X-rays that show body structure, PET scans show how the body ____61____.
The team scanned eight pigeons and checked 26 brain areas. They studied the birds’ brain activity when resting and after flying for 10 minutes. For all birds, only the cerebellum had big changes in activity. This showed flight is ____62____ the cerebellum.
To find out more, scientists studied bird-like dinosaurs ____63____ Archaeopteryx. Real brains have ____64____ over time, so researchers looked at fossil skulls. Molds made from the inside of skulls show the size, ____65____ and surface of ancient brains.
In these early flying dinosaurs, the cerebellum became much bigger. The brain also grew more complex with folds. These ____66____ prove flight is related to cerebellum changes. Next, the team wants to find the ____67____ parts of the cerebellum that help prepare birds for flight.

根据空前“Birds learned to fly about 150 million years ago.”
根据前文实验结果“only the cerebellum had big changes in activity”可知,在所有脑区中仅小脑活动发生了显著变化,证明飞行这一行为和小脑密切相关,固定短语“be connected with”意为“与…… born with“天生具有”,provided with“被提供”,satisfied with“对……

Read the passage and complete the tasks
Many think of Persia (波斯,现称伊朗) when they see silk carpets with colorful and complex (复杂的) designs. But it’s worth remembering that the Silk Road started in China. Our country has been producing world-class silk carpets for thousands of years.
This traditional craft continues today at a factory in Jinshan, Shanghai. There, silk carpets are being made by hand.
Cheng Meihua, 71, is the director of the factory. She was introduced to silk carpets when she was twenty years old. At that time, she had only two career choices: working in a machinery plant or a silk carpet factory. Without hesitation, she chose the latter because “carpets were much more beautiful than machines.”
Cheng turned out to be a talented silk weaver. The first silk carpet from her hands was considered perfect. Cheng has worked so hard over her career that she can hardly close the fingers of her left hand today. In 1980, she moved to Shanghai and helped to set up the Jinshan Silk Carpet Factory. Over the years, the factory has trained more than 1,000 skilled silk weavers.
There are twelve major steps in making a silk carpet. Cheng took me on a tour of her factory to show me the process. In the first room, several spinning wheels were spinning yarn from silk fibers. The factory uses tussar silk (柞蚕丝) rather than dupion silk (双宫丝). I was confused. “Isn’t dupion silk better than tussar silk?” I asked. “Yes, tussar silk isn’t as shiny as dupion silk,” Cheng explained. “But dupion silk is too soft for carpet making. Our factory has been researching tussar silk for more than thirty years.”
At first, the factory produced only rectangular (长方形的) silk carpets. Now, its products come in a variety of shapes. Silk carpets often become family heirlooms (传家宝). Cheng told me that the designs are very important. Her team has creatively applied the popular local art of Jinshan farmers’ paintings to the carpets.
We moved on. In the second room, a few workers were busy at the spinning wheels. Countless rolls of yarn lay on the floor. According to Cheng, a world-class silk carpet can have thousands of colors.
In the factory’s showroom, a few handmade silk carpets with beautiful designs were on display.
“You know, behind these wonderful carpets are blood, sweat (汗水) and tears,” said Cheng. “I’ve spent my life perfecting the art of making silk carpets. It’s like a never-ending adventure.”
Task 1: Answer the following questions.
68. What first led Cheng to silk carpets?
______________________________________.
69. How do tussar silk and dupion silk differ from each other?
Dupion silk is ________ and ________ than tussar silk.
70. How have the products from Cheng’s factory changed over time?
______________________________________
71. How might Cheng feel about her work at the factory, and why?
______________________________________
72. Read Cheng’s words in the last paragraph. What does the phrase “blood, sweat and tears” suggest about the process of making silk carpets?
_______________________________________
Task 2:
73. What good qualities would you like to learn from Cheng Meihua? Why and How? Write down your answer in about 30 words.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
68. She thought silk carpets were much more beautiful than machines.
69. ①. shinier ②. softer
70. At first they were only rectangular, but now they have many different shapes with Jinshan farmers’ paintings on them.
71. She might feel proud and devoted. Because she loves this craft and has spent all her life improving the art of silk carpets.
72. It suggests that making silk carpets is very hard and requires great hard work and efforts.
73. I want to learn her perseverance, because she devotes her whole life to the craft. I will stick to my dream and keep improving patiently every day.

Some of my colleagues have told me that they won’t be renewing their licences because they can no longer work at Wimbledon.
