Unit 1 Let's Celebrate!
Section A,1b and 1c
Conversation 1
Victor:
Hi,Yaqi! Is that a photo of your family?
Yaqi:
Hey,Victor!Yes,we took it on the last day of the Spring Festival
celebrations.
Victor:
What's that you're eating?
Yaqi:
Yuanxiao. They are sweet rice balls, and we eat them during the Lantern
Festival.
Victor:
Wow!They look tasty.
Yaqi:
They are!But they're also an important symbol.
Victor:
How so?
Yaqi:
For Chinese people, eating yuanxiao expresses hope for togetherness and
happiness in the family.
Victor:
That's interesting!
Yaqi:
How about you,Victor? What did you do during the Spring Festival?
Victor:
My family went to Zigong in Sichuan Province. We saw all kinds of
lanterns there!
Yaqi:
Wonderful!Do you have any photos?
Victor:
Yes,let me show you!
Conversation 2
Frank:
Meimei, why is there a day off next week?
Meimei:
It's the Qingming Festival,also known as the Tomb-sweeping Day.It's
usually in early April when the weather becomes warmer.
Frank:
So it's another festival during spring?
Meimei:
Yes,but it's also a time to show respect for ancestors and national heroes.

Frank:
How?
Meimei:
People clean their tombs and put flowers there. It's a way to remember
who we are and where we come from.
Frank:
That sounds like the Day of the Dead in Mexico. In November, people
visit and clean ancestors'tombs. They also dress in colourful costumes
and hold parades.
Meimei:
That's interesting!In China,we often go for a spring outing.Would you
like to come?
Frank:
Yes,I'd love to!
Section A,2b and 2c
Yuan Meng:What do you think of the race,Frank and Helen?
Frank:
It is so exciting!I love the sounds of the drums. Thanks for bringing us
here,Yuan Meng.
Helen:
Yes,I agree. Can you tell us more about the festival?
Yuan Meng:The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional festival in China. It's on the fifth
day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar.
Frank:
I heard it is even celebrated in other countries like Malaysia and
Singapore.
Yuan Meng:That's true.
Helen:
It reminds me of my visit to Italy.I saw a boat race there.
Yuan Meng:Yes,I think there are many boat races around the world, but this one is
special because of the story behind it.
Helen:
What is the story?
Yuan Meng:Long ago,a great poet called Qu Yuan died in the river. The locals rowed
boats and threw rice into the river to keep fish away from his body.Today,
people race boats and make zongzi in memory of him

Unit 2 A Look into the Past
Section A,1b and 1c
Conversation I
Tour Guide:Welcome to the Peking Man Site.Look over here. Can you guess what
was discovered here?
Han Lin:
Uh,it looks burnt.I guess it might be ash.
Emma:
That could be ash.It must be very old.
Tour Guide:Yes.In fact,the ash may be about 200,000 to 700,000 years old.That
means the Beijing area could be the first place in Asia where humans
learnt to use fire.
Emma:
Wow!
Conversation 2
Teng Fei:Hey,Peter.Look at this photo I took in the Shaanxi History Museum. Can
you guess what it is?
Peter:
It must be a horn of some kind, like a musical instrument.
Teng Fei:
Good guess!But it's a drinking cup.People believe it was a gift brought
to China more than 1,000 years ago.
Peter:
Wow,where could it be from?
Teng Fei:
The Middle East, probably through foreign trade.
Conversation 3
Ella:
Binbin, last night I watched a TV programme about an amazing discovery.
Experts believe it could be the first city in China.
Binbin:
Ah,yes. That must be the Liangzhu historical site.
Ella:
Yeah! Some experts say it must be about 5,000 years old.Thousands of
jade objects were found there.
Binbin:
That's right. The site also had a flood control system. It might be one
of the earliest of its kind in the world.I really wish I could visit it this
summer.

Section A,2b and 2c
Fu Xing:
Hey,Peter!Check out this article about the ancient Egypt exhibition in
Beijing.
Peter:
Hi,Fu Xing!That sounds interesting!You know,I actually visited Egypt
last summer.
Fu Xing:
Wow!How was it?
Peter:
The Great Pyramid was amazing. It might be one of the largest single
buildings on the planet.
Fu Xing:
Did you see the Gold Mask of King Tut?
Peter:
Yes,I saw it in a museum in Cairo.I also saw some gold shoes and rings
that belonged to King Tut.
Fu Xing:
I read that some people believe he was killed by enemies because there
were broken bones in his head.
Peter:
Yes.However, researchers now think that may be wrong.A CT scan
showed that he had a wound on his leg.Later,a DNA test showed that
he had a serious illness. So they believe those could be the causes of his
death.
Fu Xing:
Well, that must be true since scientific tests can be trusted more.
Unit 3 A Taste of Art
Section A,1b and 1c
Conversation 1
Yaming:
Hello,this is Yaming.May I speak to Emma,please?
Emma:
Oh!Hi,Yaming.What's up?
Yaming:
Well,I have some extra tickets to the art museum.Would you and Ella be
interested to join me this Saturday?
Emma:
Wow!What works will there be?
Yaming:
There'll be Xu Beihong's horse paintings,Qi Baishi's shrimp paintings,
Zhang Daqian's landscape paintings,and Wu Changshuo's flower
paintings.
Listening Scripts 113
Emma:
Wonderful!Ella really likes Chinese paintings,so I expect her to enjoy it.
What time do you want to meet?
Yaming:
How about two o'clock on Saturday? We can meet at the museum gate.
Emma:
Sure!We'll see you then!
Conversation 2
Yaming:
This is Xu Beihong's horse painting.
Emma:
Wow!It's so full of energy and life!
Ella:
The horses seem like they're ready to burst out of the painting!
Emma:
And what's this here?
Yaming:
This is Qi Baishi's shrimp painting.
Emma:
That's so cute!It looks like the shrimps are playing in the water!
Ella:
Qi Baishi only used a few simple brushstrokes to draw the shrimps.Yet,
the shrimps look so lifelike.
Yaming:
Yeah,it's amazing that just a few strokes can be enough!Qi Baishi's work
is more traditional in style, while Xu Beihong's style was influenced by
Western paintings.Xu's goal was to combine Chinese ideas with Western
techniques
Ella:
I think both of them were able to show the Chinese spirit in their works!
Section A,2b and 2c
Yaming:
Look at these ancient Chinese paintings.
Ella:
I like this one! It's so different from Western paintings.
Emma:
It's really long!
Yaming:
Yes.Traditional Chinese painters preferred to show several scenes from
right to left. This painting tells you a story by bringing you on a journey.
Ella:
Traditional Western paintings often tell a story too,but they usually show
only one scene.
Emma:
Also, they often show things like in a photograph.
Yaming:
That's right! Here, the Chinese painter let his brush dance across the

painting.Instead of painting everything exactly,he tried to show us his
idea of nature.
Ella:
Hmm...There are a lot of empty areas with no paint at all.
Emma:
In many Western paintings,it's the opposite.Every part of the background
is covered in paint. And they often have dark shadows.
Yaming:
But Chinese painters do have one thing in common with Western painters...
They use their art to express their feelings and understanding of the
world!
Unit 4 Reduce,Reuse,Recycle
Section A,1b and 1c
Conversation 1
Fu Xing:
Hi,Sam!What did you write about in your report for the World
Environment Day?
Sam:
Hi,Fu Xing!I wrote about air pollution because I'm really worried about
it.Sometimes it's so smoggy that I can hardly see across the street!
Fu Xing:
Air pollution is really bad for our health too.
Sam:
Yes!It also harms plants and animals and makes global warming even
worse.
Fu Xing:
Do you know why air pollution is getting worse in some places nowadays?
Sam:
Experts say that waste gases from factories and power plants are the main
cause.
Fu Xing:
Any solutions?
Sam:
That's the big question,isn't it?
Conversation 2
Fu Xing:
How about you,Adam? What was your report about?
Adam:
I wrote about land pollution.Every day,so much waste from people's
homes and industries gets buried underground. Then harmful chemicals
from the waste pollute the soil and water.
Fu Xing:
Not just that! There are also harmful chemicals from farming.
Listening Scripts 115
Adam:
Yes,and they get into the food we eat and the water we drink. It makes
people sick and harms plants and animals.
Fu Xing:
What do you think we can do about it?
Adam:
I think we may get some ideas during our school trip to the waste disposal
centre!
Section A,2b and 2c
Manager:
Hello, everyone!Welcome to our waste disposal centre.I'm the manager
here, and I'm going to take you on a tour around our centre. Please, follow
me.
Fu Xing:
Wow,I never realized that there are so many kinds of rubbish!I wonder
where it comes from.
Manager:
Most of the rubbish here comes from people's homes. The rest is from
schools,hospitals,and businesses.
Fu Xing:
What happens to the rubbish here?
Manager:
First,we organize it into different groups as soon as it arrives. The things
that can be recycled, such as paper, glass, metal, and plastic bottles, will
be taken to recycling centres. They can be used to make new products.
Adam:
What about the things that can't be recycled?
Manager:
Some of it,such as medical waste and wood, can be burnt and processed
to provide energy. The food waste can be treated and then added to soil to
help plants grow.
Sam:
That sounds good for the environment!
Manager:
It is,but we must remember that reducing our waste is still the best
solution for our environment.

Ella:
Neither can I.Oh,Emma,do you still remember when we first came to
China?
Emma:
Ah,yes!Everything here was so different. It was hard for me to get used
to school.
Ella:
Me too.But we made friends soon enough.
Emma:
Yes,and everyone has been so nice.
Ella:
Right.Do you remember our first birthday party in China?
Emma:
Of course!Fu Xing taught us how to make dumplings, and Teng Fei
brought a projector to show us a Chinese cartoon!
Ella:
Monkey King!I remember that!It got me really interested in Chinese
films.
Emma:
Same here. You know, watching these interesting Chinese films and
discussing them with friends really helped me improve my Chinese.
Conversation 2
Adam:
So,Han Lin,what are you going to do after you graduate?
Han Lin:
I'm going to vocational school.
Adam:
That sounds cool!
Han Lin:
Well,I like jobs that are more hands-on.Also,there are many new jobs
because of the growing industries. What about you,Adam?
Adam:
I'm not sure yet.Maybe I'll do as my parents want and go to medical
school. But that's years away. For now,I've decided to go to high school.
And you,Teng Fei?
Teng Fei:
Well,it's high school for me.I find scientific research really interesting.I
hope I can work as a scientist in the future.
Han Lin:
I guess you'll really need to work hard!
Teng Fei:Well, whatever path we take,we'll have to do our best.

Yaming:
Peter, which teacher will you miss the most after you graduate?
Peter:
I think it must be Mr Guo.
Yaming:
Our maths teacher?
Peter:
Yes.I used to dislike maths, but he showed me that it could be both
challenging and fun.Now I really like solving maths problems. How about
you,Yaming?
Yaming:
Well,I really like many of our teachers. But I think I'll always remember
our English teacher,Ms Gao.
Peter:
What will you remember about her?
Yaming:
Well, when I first started junior high,I was usually silent in class.I was
afraid that I couldn't pronounce some words correctly, but Ms Gao was
very patient and always encouraged me.Now I'm quite confident and
often speak up.
Peter:
That's true.I can see how you've changed.
Yaming:
She also showed us that English can be fun with interesting stories and
plays.
Peter:
I agree! What else will you miss about junior high?I'll miss the school
trips and club activities
Yaming:
Yes,me too!Oh,I'll never forget my time here.
Peter:
Neither will I!
