The 24 Solar Terms
More than 2,000 years ago,the ancient Chinese developed the 24 solar terms-a
unique "calendar"to understand nature. They divided the year into 24 periods,
each lasting 15 or 16 days. These terms were a guide for farmers-informing them
of when to carry out certain farming activities. Many traditional Chinese festivals and
folk customs are also related to the 24 solar terms.

Spring
The year begins with Start of Spring.Among the many
traditions for welcoming spring is a popular custom,"biting
the spring",where people eat spring pancakes or spring rolls.
As the temperature rises and rainfall increases, nature slowly
awakens.Farmers prepare their fields so that they can plant
their crops during Grain Rain, the last term of the season.

Summer
Start of Summer marks the transition from spring to summer.
Summer is a busy time for farmers.During the Grain in Ear

term of summer, farmers in northern China harvest winter

wheat, while farmers in southern China are busy planting summer rice.It is no wonder
why this term sounds like "busy with planting"(mangzhong)in Chinese!
Autumn
立秋有雨样样收
Start of Autumn marks the coming of a harvesting season.
There is a saying that goes,"If it rains on the day of Start of
Autumn,a good harvest is expected."By the day of Autumn

becomes cool and leaves change in colour from green to orange and yellow. The Mid-
Autumn Festival,a festival full of poetry and imagination,is celebrated around this
time.Families and friends gather to admire the full moon and eat mooncakes.
Winter
Winter is a time for farmers to store their harvests and rest.
After Start of Winter, the weather gradually changes from cool
to cold.A traditional custom on the day of Start of Winter is to
eat dumplings. The delicious and nutritious dumplings embody
a warm wish for a cozy winter.Major Cold is the final term of
the year and the coldest time of the year.As the new year draws
near, families start to prepare for the Spring Festival.
Today, the 24 solar terms still play an important role in life. They remind us of how
nature changes through the year and reflect the Chinese wisdom of living in harmony
with nature.

Into the Unknown
A lost city under the sea in the Atlantic Ocean.Gardens up in the air in an ancient city
in the Middle East. These are just two famous examples of historical mysteries that
*Reading Plus 87
,,fascinate v,使着迷fascinating adi.迷人的
havefascinated people for thousands of years. Why are people so interested in such
things?Well, humans are naturally curious. We like to use our imagination.Even when
reading, many people love to read about places and times that might not be possible
to visit in real life. Also,we like to find explanations for the things we do not fully
understand.Sometimes we may just want answers to the simple questions of where and
why.
Is the lost city of Atlantis real?
Around 360 BCE,the ancient Greek writer,Plato,
told the story of Atlantis,an island in the Atlantic
Ocean. The founders of the island were half god
and half human, and they became very rich and
powerful.However,when they became too greedy
and wicked, the gods made a terrible night of fire
and earthquakes, and the island sank into the sea.
产sink into沉入
argument n.争论;争吵
Although it is probably justa legend, later European writers believed it could be true.
There were manyarguments as archaeologists tried to identify the actual location of
the island."Pick a spot on the map,and someone has said that Atlantis was there,"
said a professor at the New York State Museum. Some thought it could be in the
Mediterranean Sea,while others said it might be off the coast of Spain.Yet another idea
was that Atlantis could be Antarctica. But was the island real?We may never know.
Where were the Hanging Gardens of Babylon?
Another famous mystery involves a wonderful
collection of gardens in the ancient city of
Babylon,south of today's Baghdad,the capital
of Iraq. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon is one
of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Many
writers described these gardens as beautiful plants
and flowers hanging from the walls of the city.

However, unlike the other wonders, scientists today argue about whether these gardens
ever existed at all.A researcher from Oxford University claimed that there were such
gardens, but they could have been in a completely different city,Nineveh, which was
near the modern city of Mosul,in northern Iraq.Unfortunately, both sites suffered
damage from wars,so it may be difficult for archaeologists ever to solve this mystery.
1Read the text and answer the questions.
1.Why are people so curious about historical mysteries? What other reasons can
you think of?
2.Who first told the story of Atlantis according to the text? Why do you think he
told such a story?
3.In what ways do people disagree about the mystery of Atlantis and the mystery of
the Hanging Gardens of Babylon?
4.Why is it difficult to solve the mysteries of ancient wonders?
2Do you know of any other historical mysteries or ancient wonders?Which
interests you the most?Do further research and share your findings in class.

Rodin and Ba/zac
-“one of+he+形容词最高级+复裁名词”意为“最……的……之一”
One of the most famous modern sculptorsis Auguste Rodin
(1840-1917).Rodin was born in Paris, and he trained to be a
sculptor from an early age.For many years,he had to make
a living by decorating buildings.
Things changed for Rodin in 1875 when he had a chance
to visit Italy. He found new inspiration when he saw the
works of Michelangelo. His breakthrough work-The Age
of Bronze-was completed that same year.It was so realistic
that people thought he had just made a cast of a human body.
When Rodin proved that it was truly his work,he became the talk of the town.

While The Thinker is Rodin's most famous sculpture, his sculpture of Balzac is also
influential.Honore de Balzac (1799-1850)was one of France's most beloved writers.
After his death,it was decided in 1891 that a statue should be created in his honour.
Rodin was supposed to complete the statuein 18 months, but in the end it took seven

years! To make things worse,at first it was rejected by the public because people did
not think it looked like Balzac at all.Rodin's reply was that the statue was not supposed
to look like Balzac's body-it was supposed to show Balzac's character and spirit.
Upset about the rejection,Rodin took the sculpture home and refused to show it again.
It was not until 1939 that the first bronze version of the sculpture was created and put
on display.

Today, the sculpture,Balzac,is celebrated as one of the first truly modern sculptures
and as one of the greatest sculptures ever made. The importance of this work and others

is that Rodin was able to break away from traditional Greek and Roman style sculptures
and create something entirely new.Rodin's sculptures are full of emotion and life, and
they speak to modern audiences in a way that traditional sculptures do not. This is why
Rodin is still celebrated and studied by artists today.
1Match the information with the sculpture.Write A for The Age of Bronze,T
for The Thinker,or B for Bakac.
1.Completed in 1875
2.Took seven years to create
3.Rodin's most famous work

The Problem with Plastic
Plastic is one of the most useful materials in the world. It provides many benefits to
our lives because it is cheap and convenient. For
example, two or three hundred years ago, clothes
were quite expensive,so many people only had one
or two sets of clothes to wear. Now,with plastics
like nylon and polyester, clothes have become
much cheaper.Plastic can also be used to replace
other things that are rare or valuable. For example, things like piano keys, which were
once made from ivory, are now usually made from plastic. This saved the lives of many
elephants.
it takes+时间段+to do sth花费多长时间做某事
However, while plastic has many:benefits,it also causes lots of problems. Some plastic
is so strong that it takes more than 400 years to break down before returning safely to

the environment. When plastic is put in a landfill, the harmful materialsinside can get
into the soil and water underground. When plastic rubbish is burnt,it fills the air with
harmful gas.Another problem is that plastic rubbish is often thrown on the ground.Rain
washes that rubbish into the rivers. From there,it is swept out to the sea.Sea animals
can get caught in it or hurt by it.Worse yet, sometimes fish eat the plastic as food, and
it gets into their bodies. When the fish get to our dining table, the plastic would get into
humans'bodies and harm our health.
What can we do about this problem? The best
solution,for now,is to use less plastic.For
example, bring your own reusable bag when
shopping.Buy products,such as clothing and
toothbrushes,made of natural materials.Avoid
buying products with plastic packaging.Say no to

See It Through
Edgar Guest(1881-1959)
When you're up against a trouble,
Meet it squarely,face to face;
Lift your chin and set your shoulders,
Plant your feet and take a brace.

When it's vain to try to dodge it,
Do the best that you can do;
You may fail, but you may conquer,
See it through!
Black may be the clouds about you
And your future may seem grim,
But don't let your nerve desert you;
Keep yourself in fighting trim.

If the worstis bound to happen,
Spite of all that you can do,
Running from it will not save you,
See it through!
Even hope may seem but futile,
When with troubles you're beset,
But remember you are facing
Just what other men have met.
You may fail,but fall still fighting;
Don't give up,whate'er you do;
Eyes front, head high to the finish.
See it through!

Poem 2
It's a Long Way
William Braithwaite(1878-1962)
It's a long way the sea-winds blow
Over the sea-plains blue,-
But longer far has my heart to go
Before its dreams come true.
It's work we must, and love we must,
And do the best we may,
And take the hope of dreams in trust
To keep us day by day.
It's a long way the sea-winds blow-
But somewhere lies a shore-
Thus down the tide of Time shall flow
My dreams forevermore*.
*forevermore is forever more in today's English.
